We would have given this place 5 stars just for beauty and location. It definitely deserves to be in House & Home for its decor and view. Our only issue was working in the kitchen. There is not a microwave which for travellers is really a must. When more than one person is working in the kitchen you have to ask each other to move often as the fridges are below the counters. We never did get the oven to work which was disappointing as eating out in Iceland is expensive. We looked carefully for instructions and did not find them. The bathroom was just beautiful but we could not get the washer working, once again directions would be helpful. In the winter you definitely need a four wheel drive. Borgarnes is a lovely little town with a great cafe and grocery but beware they close early. The scenery is just lovely. All that is just so you know but we do highly recommend The Black House.
The pictures of this house do not even do it justice. When we checked into the home, our jaws dropped and we found it hard to pick them back up! The previous three days to this three nights' stay, we were at the owners other property about an hour away. (that house is spectacular as well...) But this one... a bit "interesting" to find, and you will think you are going the wrong way, but when you get there, it is a sight to behold. Every amenity is well thought out and provided. Although we were four adults and one child staying here, the owner thoughtfully provided an extra mattress/sheets/pillow all set up when we arrived. Even though we were there in the winter, we basked in the views and the (occasional) sunlight which gave the surrounding ocean and mountains a beautiful hue. Located very close to the town of Borgarnes, which has a grocery, liquor store, and quite a few restaurants, it is also well situated for driving the Snaefellsness Peninsula, or getting to Langjokull for glacier and ice tours. We also went to Husafell and did a lava tube tour. It is also located in close enough proximity to Reykjavik and other attractions such as Thingvellir and the Golden Circle attractions. The owner, Kristinn, was helpful and thoughtful from start to finish. I can't recommend this home enough. It is far more than a vacation rental. I have traveled extensively and this is, by far, the most beautiful, unique, and amazing home I have had the pleasure of staying in. Look no further. Book it.
