Plenty to learn about Illinois history - even from billions of years ago! Huge mastodont skeleton. Great art exhibits on the second floor. Play museum as well. Fun for kids and very enriching for adults.

I've been taking my seven-year-old there since he was able to walk and he is able to find new things to peak his interest as he grows. This includes the galleries on the main floor and the ever-favorite children's area in the basement.

For the older folks, it is a natural-history museum of Illinois complete with specimens and comprehensive write-ups.

Oh, and entry is free! This is particularly useful when taking small children with short attention spans. It's often we take an hour on a Saturday morning when visiting town.

One other nicety is the coat closet behind the front desk. It's self-service but extremely convenient in the winter.

We enjoyed our trip here so much. The gallery that went through the natural history of Illinois was intriguing and interactive - we spent an hour here and then, while the little ones were playing in the Play Museum, my third-grader asked to come back up and spend more in-depth time in the exhibit. Speaking of the Play Museum, a lot of care has gone into this as well. The microscope there was the best I have ever used and the book nook was so appealing, with thoughtfully chosen and well-maintained books. The staff were welcoming and helpful. And the gift shop would be a destination in and of itself. Can't believe it's free.

My wife and I visited the Illinois State Museum while in Springfield on other state business. The museum has interactive displays that tell the story of Illinois from prehistoric times until now. It also has displays of Native Americans in Illinois. The staff was helpful and courteous. There is no fee to tour this museum.

We spent several hours in the children's activity room with toddlers who had the time of their lives. When it came time to get them back into the strollers & enjoy the museum, we especially appreciated the accessible displays on the 1st floor that allowed the girls to reach out & push buttons & pull open drawers. Big thanks to the people that keep the activity area straightened up!
