“Had a great time at the Play Museum!”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Stopped here yesterday to kill some time with our 2-year-old. He enjoyed the Play Museum quite a bit -- especially the car/steering wheel, and farm toys. It says it's designed for kids 3-10, which is true -- I do think he'll get more involved with the exhibits in another year or two. Staff were great, very helpful. We're from St. Louis and it reminded us of a smaller-scale Magic House. Thought the reading room was great, too, a nice break from the hands-on activities.

I can't speak for the actual museum itself (will do that in another trip), but I would recommend the Play Museum if you have children and an hour or two to spare.

“Natural History of Illinois”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

It had been awhile so I decided to revisit the Illinois State Museum. It takes a little bit different approach as it emphasizes the nature of Illinois, its rocks, wild life, and how its climate and topography has changed over the ages. It does not dwell on alleged man made climate change but rather on the millennia old warming and cooing of earth, its magnitude and believed causes resulting from changes in the earth’s rotation and tilt. It is an interesting and worthwhile visit for an hour or two.

“Fantastic for kids of all ages”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

The staff is incredibly nice and welcoming. They are very helpful and attentive. The hands on children's museum is fun for adults as well. You can become an archaeologist or ranger, geologist or marine scientist. So much fun!! Don't miss it if you are traveling to Springfield or just passing through. It's free!!

“Museum is for Kids”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

If you are with an adult group, I'd pass on this museum. Kids might enjoy the exhibits, but I found it a tad boring.

“A great place to visit!”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

This museum is a hidden gem! Nicely presented history of the state beginning with geological history (great job on glacial history), plants and animals native to Illinois and an explanation of the original prairies, conservation and the introduction of non-native species, and the people of Illinois and how their lives have changed. Native American exhibits were adequate but hope for more. Kids exhibits absolutely perfect! Great museum for those who like to read and learn more as well as for those who just want a quick overview. Docents excellent! Oh and by the way, it's free!
