This museum is free and really does have something for all ages. The kids area has activities for all ages, from scientific things to look at under microscopes to digging for fossils and a play jeep to take on a safari. My 3 yr old grandson played for about two hours and wanted to stay longer. There are also animal exhibits etc on the upper floors that held his interest. The museum alone takes around an hour or so depending on how much reading etc that you do at the exhibits.

Bring the whole family! Let the grandparent(s) bring the children for a bonding experience.

In "Changes" you'll see nothing like it -- the development of the state of Illinois from the time when the state was close to the equator to the present. It takes up all the area on the first floor.
.
There's more exhibits and historical artifacts on the second floor.

On the lower level, visit the three-year old Play Museum designed primarily for children 3 to10 (and parents and grandparents too!). It replaces the 25 year old "A Place for DIscovery" with the latest in the children's learning - play IS educational. Help kids learn by showing them the diffent guide books which is a "show and tell" technique for the kids to learn what they are seeing. There's a lot to see. We stayed for two hours and the kids didn't want to leave.

No admission charge but donations are welcome and used to support children's programming.

We had our 18 month old with us and dragging her to historical sites was probably boring for her. We just happened upon this museum and stopped in. Perfect for her! She loved the hands-on area in the basement, but we got there just before that section closed. No worries. She loved all the animals throughout the displays on the other floors. All in all, free and fun with the added bonus of learning about the history of Illinois.
