This Museum is not grandiose by any means, but it is very interesting. One of the treasures here is the wooden leg of Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Santa Anna lead the charge against the Alamo and it is said he ordered the killing of Davy Crockett and the rest of the soldiers in the Alamo. There have been protests by the Mexican Government demanding the return of the leg. The Museum is a very quiet place which gives one some real time to reflect on the meaning of the things inside the museum. There is no charge, but they do take a donation. It is located on the north side of Springfield, and is a very short drive, no more than a mile, from Oak Ridge Cemetery, the site of Lincoln's tomb. If you are at the Cemetery, go ahead and drop by, you can make it a quick visit if there are time constraints.

I have seen signs for this museum over the years, but have never made the effort to track it down. It is well worth the effort. It has one main exhibit, which is well done and has plenty that will be of interest to elementary-aged children (including a small play/dress-up corner, but this is the only interactive). In the lobby, there is a small shop, a civil war flag display, and a very touching memorial to National Guard members killed in recent wars.

The Illinois State Military Museum is very interesting and very informative. I learned a lot of thing about our Illinois history that I didn't really know before. I believe they have just about every war that Illinoisans' have been involved in represented here. A lot of neat things to look at and read about. Brings back a few memories if you are a vet and at the same time, a lot of educational things for the kids to see without getting bored. It is free, but by all means leave a few bucks in the jar before you leave. The donations help them to maintain the museum. Everyone in Illinois are just passing through the Springfield area should go here at least once. A lot of history to see in one building.
