“Tried to stay here .....”

But we werent able to. Prior to our trip, we booked a night at the Arctic B & B in Grindavik to be able to go to the Blue Lagoon. When we arrived to the B & B we were not able to find the proprieters and were turned away by 2 people that we were not able to communicate with because of the language barrier. Thankfully we found another Guesthouse in the town that was wonderful. Would not recommend booking here given the difficulty finding the people who run it vs. other members of the family that live in the house.

Approaching Grindavik after spending a few days camping in the mountains, I did a quick phone-around, and the Arctic B&B was the only place with a vacancy. I made my way there, and it's easy to find, being between the campsite and harbour, surrounded on most sides by grass. All the guest accommodation is at the bottom of the house... bedrooms... shared bathroom... and a kitchen/dining room. Guests are basically left to themselves, can use the kitchen, and make their own breakfast in the morning from things in the cupboards and fridge. It's all very basic and simple. I stayed for two nights, having the place to myself the first night, then I think it was nearly full the second night. The only annoying thing was that I could never find the proprietors when I wanted them, and always had to phone, even though it always turned out that they were somewhere in the house! When it comes to payment... it's cash only... no credit cards... but the price is remarkably low for a B&B.

If your plan is to go to the Blue Lagoon, save time and money by going from the international airport direct to Grindavik rather than taking the Fly Bus (about 50 minutes)then heading all the way back on a day trip with two bus tickets to pay for. I called Sunneva at the Arctic B&B and we agreed that she'd pick us up for 5,000 ISK (about $44) at the airport and go to the Arctic B&B direct (about 20 minutes). Later her husband brought us to the Lagoon and back. The rooms are clean and basic and you must share a bathroom, but compared to any hotel in Iceland the price is half. The second night we were there we were the only people on the floor. The rooms are all on the first floor that's about half below ground level. All the room but one face the small working harbor, so the view is nice and looks like the pictures. The kitchen is at the end of the house four steps above the base room level. Breakfast is self-serve, toast, coffee, tea, cereal, cold cuts, etc. (very basic). The best thing about the place is the desire of the owners to solve you problems. The bus stop to head back to Reykjavik is just a very short walk up the road to the main intersection of this very small community by the harbor. There are two restaurants nearby but the best deal is in the gas station at the bus stop. The gas station is like a well equipped truck stop with a little bakery and sandwiches, ice cream etc. There's plenty of seating and tables. The Arctic B&B and all the little places nearby are the alternative to the crazy prices at the Blue Lagoon Hotel. The price was 10,000 ISK a night (about $88) for a queen sized bed and a view of the harbor.
