“Great hotel for our last night in Iceland”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

We stayed here for our last night in Iceland and were very happy with the hotel. The family room was large and spacious with a double bed and two twins, and a good-sized bathroom. The beds were very comfortable, and the room was very clean and seemed brand new. There are a two public lounge areas with big comfy sofas and chairs, an honour bar, and a chess board. We had dinner at the restaurant and the food was good, but plain, with a limited menu. The kids' pasta was a great value and my son enjoyed it. Breakfast was very good, this was the only hotel of the eight we stayed at to offer scrambled eggs and smoked salmon in addition to the usual choices. We really appreciated the complimentary Blue Lagoon and airport shuttles, both of which helped make this hotel a good value. The hotel is less than 20 minutes to the airport, and it was really nice not having to worry about a long transfer. We would definitely stay here again if we are ever so lucky to visit Iceland a second time.

This place has been exceptional, not a single complaint. Possibly the bed is a little soggy, but everything is wonderful! The only place in Iceland with scrambled eggs. Great food, wonderful staff. I actually enjoyed looking at the steaming plant and thought it gave character to the charm. We also ate in the restaurant for dinner and the food was great. The lava rock landscape was amazing in comparison to the green rolling hills on the remainder of our trip. The linens were nice, the place was clean and quiet.
The staff helped us watch the world cup game, and it ended up being much nicer and classier than the actual blue lagoon hotel which we transferred to the next day. If we come back to Iceland we will stay here for sure.

Room Tip: Room 12 has the best view with double corner windows!!! The other rooms just have one small window.

Beautiful eclectic inn with extremely clean, comfortable rooms. Black-out curtains worked great in the midnight sun. Stayed here after arrival in Iceland from an overnight flight. After spending the morning at the Blue Lagoon we checked in and had a delicious lunch (the restaurant is the best we've ate at the entire trip so far and very well priced). I don't understand the negative reviews, the view of the geothermal plant was kind of fascinating, the landscape is incredible, the blue lagoon is within walking distance, staff were really great and Grindavik is quaint and totally beautiful. True, there isn't much to do besides the blue lagoon, but it's very relaxing with many sitting rooms, books and games. Would make a great first or last night or a base for excursions.

Initially placed a booking with Blue Lagoon Clinic but then they mixed up the booking and as a result we were sent here. Not knowing how they compared, this was a solid place for a night. Room looked out to surrounding lava fields which were snow-covered at the time we were there. The room was clean and of simple north-europe decor. The breakfast was standard fare buffet style. Staff was very friendly. It was just some five minutes drive from Blue Lagoon. The rates were comparable to average Icelandic hotel and it's cheaper than Blue Lagoon Clinic. Recommended if staying in the area.

Handy to the airport and the Blue Lagoon this hotel overlooks the geothermal power station - literally so don't expect a great view .However the rooms are very nice and comfortable and well worth that bit extra for our last 2 nights in Iceland. There is an honesty bar which was a nice touch. We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was very nice if a bit expensive even by Icelandic standards. The breakfast was the best we had in Iceland with a selection of cold and hot food. They will open the restaurant for breakfast early for those needing to catch an early morning flight - 4.30 for us

Northern Lights Inn is very conveniently located both in relation to those arriving in Iceland late at night and to the popular Blue Lagoon, making it very easy to tick off your first major tourist attraction without venturing too far.

The hotel is neat and clean but very bland, in keeping with the terrain in which it is situated but not quite capturing its stark beauty. We arrived at 2am to be efficiently checked in to our very pale and spacious room, which had everything we needed in it. Breakfast was nice and the dining room faced out onto the strange volcanic vista towards the thickly steaming geothermal plant several hundred metres away.

Whilst it served its purpose, this is not a hotel to linger at any longer than required to refresh after a long, late flight and to see the Blue Lagoon. Once that's done, rather hurry on to Reykjavik and the delights of Iceland beyond....

This was our second visit here. Located close to the airport, and 1 km from the Blue Lagoon, so excellent if you are in transit - or want to watch for the Northern Lights! Nice clean spacious rooms, very good breakfast included (smoked salmon, anyone?). Airport and Blue Lagoon shuttles are complementary. Staff are professional and helpful, dining room with view of geothermal generating station is very good. And you're located down in middle of a lava field! In winter, buy a bottle of wine at the airport duty free and settle back in the hotel viewing lounge to look for the Aurora Borealis. What could be better?
