“always a pleasure to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2012

we stayed at Hestheimar for a second time in June 2011 for a riding tour. Being 50+ we really appreciated the comfort of a room with private facilities, delicious food (also during the day with BBQ, desserts, wine and the horses grazing around you) the great horses and tracks, as well as the wonderful hospitality Lea and Marteinn gave us. So guess, where will be our next riding tour in Iceland??

If visiting Iceland in the winter I highly recommend securing accomodations before passing through Hella. Since there are very few options open in the winter you will not have much of a selection and may be left staying in a horse barn :(. If Hestheimar is an option in any season do everything you can to find something else....or worst case scenario....sleep in your car!!

We called to make a reservation while having dinner in the town of Hella during a mild snowstorm in February 2011. We were told that there was a cabin available but when we pulled up to the farm we were told that the room was no longer available. We were offered a room in the horse barn for an exorbitant price - turned out to be the most expensive and least hospitable stay during our 10 day trip round Iceland.

The room above the horse barn is a large dorm style room with about 20 beds, and there are additional rooms off of the dorm room with 2-3 beds each. The rooms reek of horse dung, the space is grungy and the bedding is minimal. The bathroom is communal and very, very dirty. We didn't even take a shower because of the conditions.

We had heard that the breakfast was delicious so we were at least looking forward to a nice warm Icelandic breakfast. When we entered the breakfast area we were forced to sit at a table that had dirty plates on it. When we asked for fresh coffee the hosts looked put out. We served oursleves from the attractive buffet and immediately upon sitting down the hostess began clearing the buffet without warning. She was clearly more involved with entertaining the group that was going horseback riding that day and did not offer us an ounce of hospitality.

Don't plan on being taken care of at this farmhouse pension unless you are a large group taking advantage of the horseback riding services offered here. Reserve with caution.

We stayed in Hestheimar for one night. This guesthouse specialises on horse riding, but it is also a great place to stop over and just spending the night like us. The rooms are ensuite and very spacious. Our room had a lovely shower and all amenities that I would expect in a (much more expensive) hotel room. The breakfast buffet catered for all tastes and featured freshly prepared pancakes, homemade jams, pastries and potted meat terrines, along with the usual choice of cereals, fruit and coffee. We were spoilt for choice - again much more than in some (more expensive) hotels on our trip. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. Hesheimar is easy to find, with a large sign & flag display at the exit of the No 1 Ring Road. Overall, great value for money! Would definitely stay there again.

I had the pleasure of staying at Hestheimar this July for several days of riding and can not recommend the trip more highly. Both the accommodations and riding facilities as well as surrounding properties were all very well maintained and the owners were incredibly helpful for a first time visitor to the country.
As far as the riding, Hestheimar had a great selection of horses to choose from so you can be confident that you are riding an experienced animal which can sometimes be hit or miss on riding trips.
I will be visiting again!

five dutchmen who stayed in hestheimar from may 25 till may 27 would like to thank the staff for their warm hospitality.
We enjoyed our stay enormously, the dinners were excellent, in particular the fine lamb-dinner,
and the people are very professional and friendly, the location is very special and together with the iceland-singing during dinner we experienced an unique ambiance

My friend and I had an amazing stay at Hestheimars during Easter 2011. Our guide was very sweet, competent and caring. The horses were great. Breakfast was the best we had during the entire trip - and we slept like babies in the room named after one of the horses at Hestheimar.

Our family stayed here in a small cottage for 3 nights on our drive around Iceland. It was brand new and lovely and the surrounding countryside was so pretty. It was a bit crowded at breakfast due do a horse flu outbreak that had left some Swiss guets without a place to stay and they were doing their best to accommodate them. I can't fault them for that at all.

Our kids were able to go on a horse ride and this was a great location for checking out the south coast of Iceland. I especially liked it because it was so quiet at night and just a generally peaceful place.
