“At last we felt we'd arrived”
Reviewed 28 August 2013

After staying at a number of different places in South Iceland, Hesteimar was where we finally felt we were truly on an icelandic farm holiday, with barn and guesthouse set within rolling fields that provide grazing for their 160 horses. Meals were delicious (best lamb I've tasted), the welcome was warm and the accomodation excellent (we stayed in a room in the main house). Food was very reasonably priced by icelandic standards.

We came to the guesthouse for one night and also booked a riding tour. There were about 10 people riding. We didn't get any instructions what to do on the horses, everybody was riding somewhere and it was really chaotic. We felt a little afraid. Two saddles came off on one side, because they didn't tighten the belts, they also had sick horses on the tour, which we don't think is acceptable.

We booked a room for two, but the hotel was overbooked so we had to stay in a room that normally is used for the staff. It was dirty and much too expensive.

We took a walk around the area and found a little cow. A girl that was working there told us that the cow was sick and you could see that too. It was very very skinny and had troubles breathing. It was obvious that it would have needed medical treatment. Also it was all alone, no other cows anywhere to be seen.

Then the homemade bread! It is a joke! Don't eat it. You don't know what you get from it. The kitchen where they bake it is in the horsestable and looks very dirty.

So our resumé: NEVER again!

Relaxed atmosphere on the Icelandic countryside. Beautiful surroundings. Great service and the staff made us feel like part of the family. Lovely homecooked food. Wish we could have stayed longer than just one night.

if you are a horse, the place is ok. but if you are a human being, i'd reccommend to avoid the venue. the "sleeping bag accomodation" is a large room with some 20 beds - and this you know in advance. but what you do not know is that the "beds" are two long tables with narrow and thin slabs of foam on top, one single shower, and that the place is permanently permeated by the smell of horse stool. you do not know that the kitchen is filthy (i don't care if it was some other guest's fault: i have the right to find a decent kitchen - clean the place and blame the guilty); you do not know that you are expected to have your meals in a cold dark place and in the actual presence of the same horse stools mentioned above. never again.

Overall, very nice experience, staff extremely friendly, environment so quiet and peaceful. Kids 7 and 9 made a 1 hour horse ride and they loved it. The shower in the left cottage when you face them, was not properly working, the drainage system was down, creating a pool each time we were showering. The door frame shrank with the water flood so you cant close the door anymore, apparently we were the first to mention this as this was a surprise to them. Breakfast was fantastic, but the price ... -almost 80 usd for 2 adults and 2 kids...? Guesthouses in the South are ripping off clients, sorry to say. Just spent the night yesterday in the North for 40 pct of the price and breakfast included!

Room Tip: For a family of 4 with 2 young kids, take the right cottage (opposite the reception).

Our room was over 300 Canadian and it was 100 square feet for a family of 4. The guest house had one shower for 10 rooms. There are no blinds on the windows and there is only 2 hours of darkness. We were beside the barn with the equipment. We had to drive to the main house. The place was run down.

We didn't stay at this guesthouse, but we did have the privilege of riding here. My 10 and 12 year olds have only been on horses a few times and our guide here was wonderful in teaching them all they needed to know to have a great ride. We had the sweetest horses. They equipped us with helmets. They had steps to help us get on and off the horses. The trail ride was fabulous - across meadows, through a stream (more than once) and through a little hidden lava rock valley on the property. They even fed us homemade muffins when we returned. And awesome experience!
