Hella is a very small town, with not much in the way of dining choices. We'd been staying at the Hotel Ranga, which has terrific food, but wanted to try a local place, so we stopped at Kannslarinn, right on the main road. There were absolutely no tourists there, only towns people, and it's clear that this is a local gathering place. The decor is plain, the atmosphere is more like a Denny's than fine dining, and the menu was a little bit of everything. I asked the owner what he'd recommend, and he said the fish and chips.
What I got was the most incredibly fresh haddock, in a delicate crust of batter. Tender, tasty -- the best I've had anywhere!
I would, however, steer away from the vienna schnitzel, which was too salty and not pounded thin enough. I suspect it's on the menu just for German tourists. But do come in and give the fish and chips a try!
