“Best place to stay in Hella”
Reviewed 8 January 2014

It was hard to choose between here and hotel Ranga for our trip in October. In the end we went for the cheaper option and were so glad we did. Ranga is very close to the main road whereas Laekur is alot more scenic and remote. Having said that the drive to get to the hotel was easy with spectacular scenery.

This is a very friendly family run hotel. The food was excellent and they catered well for our dietry needs (vegan). The room was immaculately clean, simply furnished with everything you could need.

We were very lucky that the clouds cleared and we had a good show of the northern lights on our first night. Even the owner was excited and helped us get good shots and emailed on excellent photos he had taken. There is absolutely no light pollution here and the restaurant lights were turned out for better viewing.

Save yourself a fortune and stay here, you won't be disapointed!

Room Tip: Good views from the upstairs rooms

We had an amazing 3 days at Laeker and were treated like stars by Gunner and his family. Our room was cosy with access to outside from our room, which came in handy for photographing the Northern Lights. Gunner woke us when the lights were visible!!!! The food was exceptionally good, the breakfasts were delicious and the views from the hotel were breathtakingly beautiful. Will be coming back!! The hotel had a home away from home feel and we were able to move around freely. A small hotel which meant we were not being hassled with busy, pushy people - on the contrary - we felt like family members and had a very realxed time when we returned from a full day of sightseeing. Thanks for a great visit.

Room Tip: All the room are good. Upstairs you need to go outside and up the stairs. Downstairs rooms have acce...

We've had the chance of staying in this hotel on our 1st night of the "Golden-Cirlce-Tours" and wished we'd stayed for the duration of our trip.
Very nice and welcoming hosts, gourmet food and copious breakfast with home-made bread.
The decoration is lovely, rooms are spacious and the bath-room has a "walk-in-shower", hair dryers are provided.
One thing is sure, when coming back to Iceland, Hotel Laekur will definitely be on our itinerary.
Thanks again for your warm hospitality !!!

We loved it here....very nice staff/family, great location remote and near great sites at the same time, good food, comfortable rooms and beds. Nice lounge/aurora viewing room. We would definitely stay here again. And, when our luggage didn't arrive for a couple of days, they loaned me a coat. Without it, I wouldn't have been able to go outside. Be helpful advice on what to see and how to get there.

Hotel staff was extremely helpful. We were rescued by them as we went to the wrong road and our car were stuck in the thick snow. They helped to pull out our vehicle and led us to the hotel with no extra charges. In addition, we were delighted to see out rooms as the facilities are modern with a backdoor which gave us great access to see the northern lights. We were the only group staying in the hotel that night and were blessed to have to chance to witness northern lights and shooting stars!!!

Stayed three nights in December 2013 during coldest weather for some time (-20 one night). Upstairs North facing room (as requested) was accessed by outside stairs and was warm and comfortable but needed to get outside wear on to go back into the hotel. The owner Gunnar and his family were very friendly and helpful and we were woken around 1.00 am on our first night to view Northern lights. Gunnar took amazing photos of us with n lights in background which we will treasure forever.
Plenty of choice for breakfast and the two evening meals we had were lovely if a little pricey compared with home cooking in UK. Tea and coffee were freely available at any time and we spent some time in the cosy upstairs lounge.
The scenery around the hotel was amazing and we were lucky to have clear, sunny weather during our stay which, coupled with the recent snow, made for plenty of picture postcard scenes.
We were so glad we got out of Reykjavik and used this lovely hotel as a base to visit the wonderful South Iceland area.

Room Tip: Upstairs North facing rooms are best placed to view Northern lights.
