Hotel Ranga is a very cosy hotel, with lovely facilities and an excellent restaurant. We had the standard room and it was great - quite enough room and a lovely big bathroom with a jacuzzi bath.
The restaurant is expensive, but not prohibitively. Wine is expensive wherever you go, so if you're a T-total then your meal will be significantly less. The puffin is delicious, definitely try it if you're not a veggie!

The location is perfect for access to hiking, and all the excursions. And since it's in the middle of nowhere, you won't hear a thing at night so you'll sleep VERY well.

The only thing that could have improved our stay would have been to see the Northern Lights! But the hotel have the courtesy to wake you up if they're showing, which is great.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are excellent - there are only about 50 rooms, all with similar surroundings, so you...

the complimentary reviews are spot on and accurate. we stayed 2 nights just after easter. the views, atmosphere, service, hot tubs, quality of food are all excellent. we were awoken and saw the northern lights one of the 2 nights, but it was very brief and almost certainly a mini showing and not quite the full spectacle. best to plan lots of other things and then if you also see the lights then its a magical bonus.
distances are great in iceland. this is a superb overnight stay after leaving reykjavik and driving round the 3 golden circle sites. the next day we went crampon walking and ice climbing on the nearby myrdalsjokyl glacier and walking around 2 lovely waterfalls, selgalandsfoss and skogafoss. the latter is under rated and at the top there is a lovely walk of whatever length you wish. the next day we headed back to reykjavic for whale watching, but if we had had more time we would have pressed on to the the glacier iceberg lagoon which is quite some distance. away. All in all a really great place and lovely hotel

We have just returned from a self-drive tour of Southern Iceland, Hotel Ranga was the last stop along the way and was the perfect end. The hotel is beautiful, and very authentic with is wooden decor. Our room was spacious and had a little balcony that would have been perfect for viewing the northern lights, but unfortunately they didn't make an appearance. They were very clean, with a TV and DVD player with a large selection of films- the bathroom was the highlight for me with a huge jacuzzi bath- perfect after a day glacier hiking!

The restaurant was excellent, the staff were very attentive and describe each course for you and they present it. All the dishes were beautifully prepared and very artistic. The creme brulee with 'ice, snow and lava rocks' was a definite highlight for me.

Breakfast was excellent as well, with definitely the largest selection out of the 5 hotels we stayed at.

There's a really nice lounge area with a pool table as well if you don't want to be in your room all night.

Overall it was quite pricey, as most places in Iceland are- but I absolutely loved this hotel and definite was to visit it again!

location is good, very central and off the main shopping street, although there was no parking and it was noisy with people clubbing until the early hours.

The decor is very modern, with black leather beds, 'modern lighting' and a very modern bathroom. However, the bathroom had a large frosted window into the bedroom- and despite being frosted you could still see everything- I'm not a prude but I do like a bit of privacy! The door was also very large and glass and had complete clear sections in... which were off-putting.

Again the 'double' room was 2 singles pushed together with 2 single duvets and it was absolutely baking at night, despite the window being open.

There was no restaurant as advertised, but breakfast was good- quite a lot of choice.

We went to the restaurant next door 'Sushi Samba' and would definitely recommend it- it was absolutely fantastic!

Overall, a nice hotel but shouldn't really be classified as a 4 star as lots of improvements could be made.

We stayed at Hotel Ranga for 4 nights over Easter. It was a great base to explore southern Iceland but you definitely need a car. It is located about 90 minutes drive from Keflavik airport and we explored the Golden Circle, Vik, Myrdalsjokull glacier in 3 days. We visited Reyjkavik and the Blue Lagoon on the 4th day on the way back to the airport for a 4pm flight.

We had 2 dinners at the hotel and 1 night visited the pub in Hella (was ok). The food at the Hotel Ranga restaurant was delicious with the highlights being the mushroom soup and fish. The service was good and one waiter in particular was great and we chatted to him a lot the first night and were disappointed on our return that he was not working (David?).

Unfortunately bad weather ruined our chance of seeing the Northern Lights but we registered for the phone calls each night anyway. We received 2 calls on the last night when the weather had cleared up and along with many other guests went out into the car park and kept our eyes peeled. We saw a brief glow in the sky but disappointly not enough to warrant being able to say we had seen the lights.

We had a room on the southern side and had a hot tube directly outside and enjoyed sitting out in the warm water having a few drinks while enjoying the scenery.

Room Tip: The rooms on the northern side adjoin the car park and are best for viewing the Northern Lights. The...

Great lodge style place with a nice feel. The rooms were really big & well furnished. There was a huge bathroom. The hot tubs were nice treat.

The food was excellent & the restaurant staff were all first class. The food was fairly pricey though & there aren't many other places to eat nearby.

I loved this place and will come back.

I booked this trip as a present to my husband who had always wanted to see the Northern Lights. It was in an excellent location for seeing the Lights, and surprisingly luxurious. If you want to see the Lights you need somewhere pretty remote and this was. I would recommend that you hire a car because there is just so much to see and some of the organised trips can be pretty expensive.

We flew into Reykjavik without hiring a car as we thought we would pick up a cab. We found that this was too expensive so we hired a car and it was the best thing we could have done. Hotel Ranga is a good 1.5 hr drive from the airport but the main roads are pretty good and the cars are kitted out for driving in extreme cold.

The hotel is in the style of a wooden lodge and is situated along the banks of a river. Mountains and a couple of volcanos surrounded us in the distance. We went at the beginning of December and although it was cold and we had gone prepared, the hotel was really warm and well insulated. The Lodge has multiple hot tubs dotted around the accommodation, so you can run from your room to the hot tub and jump in without getting frost bite!

I cannot praise the staff enough. They were truly amazing and nothing was too much trouble for them. There is a really good restaurant on site and to be honest not much around in the surrounding towns so you are pretty tied to eating in the hotel. We did venture into the local town one night and had a pretty average meal which was expensive so we kept to the hotel for the remainder of the time.

I cannot say enough about the Hotel Manager. We had our young son with us on the trip and he was absolutely intrigued with the lights. The Manager has a wonderful application on the hotel computer that tracks the likelihood of the Lights appearing and he spent a lot of time educating our son on everything to do with the Lights. Even though he was busy he was so patient and welcoming and would look out for my son to answer more of his questions.

We were only there for 3 nights and we saw the Lights on the first night we were there and the last night. The hotel will book you a wake up call so that if the Lights do appear there is no danger of missing them. I had done a lot of research on the best places to see the Lights and Iceland ranks as one of the areas with the higher probability. We were so lucky to see them and they were truly SPECTACULAR.

The entire trip was fantastic and I would love to return to Hotel Ranga one day soon.

This hotel is situation in an isolated position Approx. 90 Km East of Reykjavik, very close to the coast. It is ideally situated for exploring the south of the island. Its isolated position means that the sky is clear of light pollution so if the Northern Lights are visible you get an outstanding view (view images on Google). The one downside of the isolation is that you are more or less forced to dine in the hotel restaurant in the evenings unless you are 'out and about' and eat before returning. A three course meal without drinks will set you back about £50 per head. The best part of the hotel for me was the 'hot tubs' which are placed strategically around the building just yards for the rooms (which are all ground floor). This meant that at night although the temperatures when we went (February) were around freezing you could sit out in the tubs and watch the stars which were stunning. The rooms are of average size but very comfortable and warm. Contrary to reports we had read the rooms did have a kettle so you could make your own drinks. I would certainly go again if only you could guarantee the the lights!

Room Tip: Pay extra and you can have your own hot tub.
