By far the worst hotel experience we have ever had. We arrived to find reception deserted and had to search the hotel to find a man vacuuming so we could check in. We were given the key to our room but no information regarding breakfast etc. On entering our room we thought the decor dated but ok and it was very clean. So far so acceptable although clearly of a lower standard than the other 4 hotels we had stayed in on our tour around Iceland. It is clearly more suited to school groups and backpackers than to tourists.
My boyfriend went downstairs to ask about dinner (available at all other hotels we had stayed in) to be met with an astounded attitude that we should expect such a thing and told brusquely that there was a restaurant down the road - no name or directions given, Same attitude when asked about breakfast but did say it was from 7 until .... I then back downstairs to find that the man had locked up the hotel and left - it was only 5pm! We were then left alone in a deserted hotel for the night with no means of contacting staff if there was a fire or other emergency. He didn't even have the courtesy to tell us he was going to leave the hotel shut up overnight. I found the experience of being left there quite scary.
In all my years of travelling (and staying in some not so nice places) I have never before felt the need to contact the travel agent and ask to be moved to another hotel but we did.And the next day were moved to a lovely hotel in Selfoss.
The owners clearly could not be bothered with us as we were the only people staying there - in which case they should not take the booking or refer us to another hotel. I would recommend you to avoid this hotel which should really be classified as a hostel

Hotel Hella was the only hotel we stayed in Iceland.. all the other nights were apartments and we missed the warmth that offered in this hotel. We arrived late but called to inform them . It was off season so the hotel was quite empty . No receptionist after we checked in ... Gone home ( dread to think what would happen if I didnt call ) . no staff , no human except the guests ..( so dont expect room service)

Anyway, we wanted to go out after 11 pm to try to watch the Northern Lights which was the whole point of staying a night out here ( if not we would have just driven back to Reykjavik) and there wasnt anyone and the doors were locked. so i had to call a number that was given and he sleepily replied to just leave the door unlatched..

That night another guest was locked out as well ... so in the middle of the night we had someone throw pebble at our window to open the door for him ...

My boyfriend and I did a driving tour of Iceland In March 2014 for my birthday. Due to bad weather we ended up staying at the hotel for two nights. However he and I both agreed this was the best place we stayed at during the whole 10 days of our trip!

The service we received from the staff was OUTSTANDING! There were only a handful of guest staying at the time and we were very fortunate to have intimate meals and unforgetable conversations. I miss the wife's cooking and the husbands funny jokes and stories. The rooms and the hotel were very clean. I would highly recommend staying here, you will not be disappointed.

We were on our road trip and it was late night and we did not know where we are going. I came to Hella and all was almost closed excelt Hotel Hella. We got a nice deal for the night and we enjoyed our stay.

You have nice breakfast at the morning, internet access is great in public area, as the hotel is earthquake ready. The walls are very thick and beds are so confy, that you do not want to wake up.

We would like to thank to the stuff for amazing night in amazing country.

The hotel is conveniently located: just a couple yards from the Ring Road 1, almost next to a supermarket, gas station, restaurant and the nice thermal swimming pool.

Rooms are proper and clean with everything we needed. The rooms have very thick walls, that keeps some noise outside but also the wi-fi connection. That was not a problem for us as they have a spacious living area with big-screen sat. tv and high speed wi-fi connection.
Complimentary tea and coffee is available there as well.
Breakfast was nice, with all local Icelandic ingrediënts made. No need to worry for Class B food.

The best of all was the service. Really great owners with a lovely character a willing to answer all questions and help you with everything.

We had a great time at Hotel Hella and we'll come back if we visit Iceland in the future!

Room Tip: All rooms are (about) the same.
