“Expensive stay - poor food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2013 via mobile

Good for hikers - in that point of view it's a great stay! 'Rooms' are very small and expensive (€ 100 night, double bed). Dinner was made without love - instead of that, the cook used fat. Use this accommodation for max. 2 days. The hikes in the area are gorgeous.

After the Reykjavik Excursions bus misplaced my bag and I ended up in Thorsmork wearing the clothes I had run the Laugavegur in, the manager was absolutely wonderful. The quintessential host, he made sure I had a place to sleep (my tent and sleeping bag were with my pack), dry clothes to wear and food to eat. He also spoke with the bus company to track down my bag.

I highly recommend this place.

We stayed at the Volcano huts over the Summer and it was a truly unforgettable experience. The accommodation is warm and comfortable, with bunk beds and a small kitchenette. There is a sauna and a hot outdoor pool which you can warm up in after a cold day's hiking. Then there is a common room where you eat meals and hang out on comfy sofas. The food is absolutely delicious - when we were there we had probably the best lamb I have ever tried. Every morning you also get a hearty buffet breakfast. This is exactly the kind of place you want to stay at if you are an outdoors hiking kind of person. Not too many frills, but extremely good where it counts - warm, cosy, excellent food and good spots to relax.

Then of course there is the location. It is situated a long way down a very bumpy track, which involves several river crossings, including one which is best not attempted by anything but the most hardened 4x4s (we saw one small tourist bus get stuck)! No matter though, there is a modified off-road bus which will take you from the main road, or from any point along the track. When you arrive you find yourself in the middle of the Icelandic wilderness - not a sign of civilisation for miles and miles - just the mountains, the river and the glacier, and of course the huts at Thorsmork. And of course there are myriad opportunities for beautiful hikes on your doorstep.

So overall this is a great place for hikers, people who love the outdoors, or anyone who wants to get away from it all. I should also mention that the staff are extremely friendly, and in fact when I accidentally left my phone there, the manager posted it back to the UK for me free of charge. Would totally recommend it to anyone.

When we were planning our trip to Iceland we discovered the busses weren't going to be running into Thorsmork the day we planned on going. Magnus, one of the owners, emailed that he would be available to drive us in. We are so glad that he made it all work out for us. The drive in was one of our more memorable and exciting experiences and our time at the Volvanoe Huts and Thorsmork allowed us to see one of the most beautiful and representative areas in all of Iceland. We were lucky enough to meet Magnus's family and to get close to their entire staff, all of whom make the atmosphere one of acceptance, inclusion and family. They are able to offer a variety of accommodations (cabins, dorms and camping), a fabulous restaurant/social area (try their Apple/Lemon cake), sauna/hot spring and a massage yurt, most of which are not available at the other two accommodation options in the area. With all the energy, friendliness and future plans of Magnus and his staff, I can see nothing but greatness and success for what he is attempting to create in Thorsmork. Hopefully, this will open this beautiful valley up to more travelers in Iceland's future.

We were very excited about doing a 2 day walk between Skogar and these huts. We stayed o/n in the mountain pass hut but the weather that evening turned very nasty and the route down to Thorsmork was closed the next day and we were told it would be reckless to try. So we had to turn back and made it back down to Skogar in terrible conditions.....which was not easy with 3 kids in tow. As there were no connecting buses to Thorsmork for the rest of that day, we had little choice but to go back to Reykjavik

Luckily the apartment we had rented for our first couple of days in Reykjavik was still available and the owner welcomed us back....and then the bus company refunded us our money for the bus trip not taken from Thormsmork to Reykjavik, pre-booked for the afternoon after we had been due to stay at the Volcano Huts. So we saw much kindness in Iceland.

The Volcano Huts would not refund us our stay which they were in their rights not to do...not even the breakfast that we had pre-booked and not eaten. We would suggest that travellers to this area book accommodation cautiously. It is a remote region and not easy to get places at the best of times as some of the other reviews hint at. The only way we could have got there was by magic in the conditions we faced that day. We had expected at least a partial refund. Of course , we cannot actually comment on the place itself!

We've spend tree nights in a cottage, with our little baby (1,5).
It was quite a good experience, but you have to be ready to a rustic way of living. If you're advised, you'll spend a really good time.
First of all, be aware that if you take your 4x4 to the Krossa river parking, you'll have to cross around 10 (smaller) rivers. For us it was a bit frightened, but we survived and finally had a lot of fun! There are a lot of cars on that road who can help you. If you don't feel secured, take the bus at the beginning of the road.
The kitchenette in cottages is really small, don't think you'll be able to cook pasta for 4 people in such small pots ;-) Anyway, the food in the restaurant is really really good, and not as expensive as you could imagine so far from the towns.
Be aware that there is no hot water and no fridge in the cottage.

No toilet in the cottage, that's my "-1". :-(

We stayed at the Volcano Huts for a rest day, shower and cooked food while hiking from Lanmannelaugar to Skogar. The private rooms were comfy but expensive. The food was excellent. The service too. But don't come here for the hot springs which were tepid.
