“Wonderful peaceful Place”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

I was initially skeptical and upon arriving I was pleasantly to see people from all walks of life in the central dining area. It was delightful to meet all the friendly people. The owners and staff are very knowledgeable and warm individuals. They helped me with daily treks in the area. I loved it and if was a phone mal experience for me. It exceeded my expectations.....Tanya Clow, Fort Lauderdale-USA

The food is good and the huts are in a scenic place. It is just what you need as a base to go hiking and explore the beauty of the area. They have a sauna, really small baby pool and shared bathroom facilities.

I love hiking and being in the forest but I'm not a fan of roughing it and lugging around a massive backpack full of equipment. The Volcano Huts were therefore a perfect choice for our part-city-part-out-in-the-wild Iceland trip. We could spend the whole day hiking, and then come back to our spare-yet-cozy cabin, brush our teeth at the sink and sleep in a nice bed with pillows and comforters. No TV, no private bathrooms or showers, no WiFi, no luxury, just a little extra comfort if you want to spend some time in the national park but aren't backpacking your way around Iceland.

The staff was helpful; we mainly relied on them to recommend hiking trails - particularly useful since we were traveling during the shoulder season and not all of the trails had been reopened/maintained after the winter.

The meals were on the expensive side, but certainly a worthwhile splurge if you're not trying to economize too much. The food is a cut above what you'd expect at a campsite cantine - it's great to tuck into a buffet of fresh salad, roast lamb, potato wedges, roasted carrots, hot soup and bread with butter a day of hiking. Of course, for those who would argue that comforters and roast lamb are the cheater way to experience a national park, the Volcano Huts also offers facilities for preparing your own food and campgrounds where you can pitch your tent. But I liked having the comfy options available :)

Our driver/guide booked us (2 adults and 2 kids aged 9 and 5) a cabin for 1 night here. She did inform us beforehand that the toilet was not private. Still, I was still a bit shocked when we first arrived since we are not camping or backpacking type. But to be honest, we had a perfectly cozy stay.

Bedsheets and towels were waiting on the bunk beds when we arrived, but we had to put on the sheets ourselves. I also swept the little cabin to make it feel cleaner. It was nice to have the sleeping area and the eating area separated in the little cabin. There was enough seating for the 4 of us. There was an electrical plug too. We didn't cook, but there were lots of pots and pans etc.

Dinner buffet that night was broccoli cream soup, salad, fish and lamb. I think my husband devoured around 6 pieces of the lamb. Yes even in a barebones hut, Icelandic lamb still tasted lovely. Dinner was not cheap, but nothing is ever cheap in Iceland. Breakfast was included. They put up a big screen for everybody to watch the World Cup. As an aside, the 66 North gloves on sale at the cafeteria were the cheapest compared to different 66 North stores in Reykjavik!

We did the shortest hike (still took us 90 minute walking with the kids) but it was amazingly beautiful. There was also a herd of horses that was passing by the cabins. Finally we got to touch them and got real close to them.

It was super windy and super cold at night so the kids skipped shower. The adults did shower, and yes, it was a bit "far" from our cabin (say, 200 meters) and yes it was a communal shower.

Had I been doing my own travel planning, I probably would have skipped this place. But we spent our 5 wonderful days in Southeast Iceland with a guide and she picked this place for us. And I'm actually really happy we got to stay here. It was a different experience for us, but I only have good memories from the stay.

We stayed in the Volcano huts after hiking for three days, so I guess saying "we slept well" won't count for much, given that we were dead on our feet.

All the same, we stayed there for a night and a day, had two lunches, a dinner and a breakfast, which were all fine, but super expensive.

The pool was nice to sit out in, but the sauna could be a little better!

We hadn't realized when making the booking that we would have to pay extra (and so much) for a bus ride to and from the huts and for bedding. It was not required to pay for bedding at any other place we stayed in Iceland. However the landscape was beautiful, there was a nice nature trail and a beautiful cave around the area, we could relax in the sauna and the dinner was nice. The huts were ok but the shared bathroom facilities were smelly. Other than that the staff was really helpful and we made the most of our stay there before we had to hurry to get one of the two buses that pass through the huts, back.

Hi Vasiliki and thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to write this review. I am glad you liked the overall stay and that you enjoyed the view in Þórsmörk, which in my opinion is some of the best in Iceland.

It is true that we are not the cheapest place to stay, especially not with the added cost of transportation. However, getting here is an adventure in itself as you have to cross multiple rivers on your way with nice views of the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano & glacier. Our location set us certain limitations in regards of pricing of our service and with a very short season it is hard to compete with the prices of other locations closer to the main roads. It is not our goal to be the cheapest but to offer good service and hopefully leave this place better than it was when we started here two years ago.

Hope you had a great time in Iceland and that you have the chance to visit again.

Best regards

Can't comment on the lodging here since we only had dinner before grabbing the bus, but dinner was great. I am a vegetarian and have had pretty limited options on this trip so was more than pleasantly surprised by the dinner buffet having a vegetarian entree AND three vegetable dishes as well as a really nice salad. The veggie entree was delicious (a really nice veggie lasagna with chickpeas, veggies and a lot of flavor) as were the sides. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very pleasant as well!
