“Friendly, bucolic, good base”
Reviewed 7 September 2012

We stayed for three nights (family of 6) in two chalets in August 2012. The chalets - as described by others - sleep four and are compact but well thought out. Our kids are small and thought that they were great fun - having four full size people in each one would be tight. Everything works well - good shower, surprisingly good noise insulation, decent mattresses. You have to rent your bed linen (I guess you could turn up and use your own sleeping bag if you had one with you) and you have to put it on the beds yourselves, which is OK if you know in advance. There are other types of accommodation and it's worth noting that this popular place gets booked up so plan ahead if you can. What sets this place apart is the attitude of the staff and the general ambiance. Everyone is very friendly whilst allowing you your own space and the farm is set in rolling green countryside, which is delightful. Plenty of friendly creatures for small kids - Tumi the sheepdog, the cat, lots of semi-tame rabbits hopping about, and horses. We went on a horse trek (need to arrange this in advance as they don't ride every day) which was pleasant. The food is good: there is a set three course dinner (no choice) which we had one night (excellent...just depends if you fancy the menu that night) otherwise there is a small selection of burgers etc (which were very good in fact), plus a kids menu. Note that the kitchen shuts at 8:30 (if you are cramming as much as you can into your days' sightseeing) although, typically, when we called ahead one night to say that we'd be late they made sure that our food was ready when we arrived. This is a good choice.

We rented a cottage with hottub here for two days. The cottage itself was ok although the shower flooded. From the cottage we had a great view of the Icelandic country side with mountains with glaciers in the background. The hottub was nice to. It's very convenient that you can cook your own meals here, because Iceland is an expensive place to travel.

Smaratun Guesthouse has been the absolute highlight of our trip to Iceland - it was the best accomodation we have spent night in during our stay and it was also the cheapest one. It could not get any better than this!

We have stayed in a chalet, which is a small cottage containing a 4 person bedroom (one double bed and one bunk bed) and a minimialistic bathroom (shower, sink and toilet). It has a small but powerful heating unit, some lights, table, chairs, a couple of shelves and a television. The beds are really comfortable and equipped with pillows and blankets (bed linen is extra though), shower is pleasantly hot and there was even a compilmentary shower gel and towel in there.

The chalets are placed behind the guesthouse and hotel overlooking nearby pastures and have a small terrace, so you can spend your evening sipping wine and looking at horses and sheep and fall asleep with farm sounds around you.

There is a common room available in the guesthouse main building containing a small roofed terrace with a couch and some reading materials and quite large and well equipped kitchen.

Outside there is a small outside seating area with grill (which we did not use due to rain) and a freely accessible hot-tub (make sure you shower before going in as is customary in Iceland!).

On top of all that, there is a really friendly staff - we felt welcome from the first moment up until we checked-out and even though we were budget travellers, we were helped with everything we needed. Really outstanding service!

Note: We were travelling as group of four friends on a budget and did not mind the minimalistic chalet we were staying in. A family with kids staying for multiple nights might find it a bit cramped, but that depends on your preferences.

Animal lovers bonus: There is a really friendly black cat on the premises. Pet her for me if you stay there!

We stayed one night in the Smaratun Guesthouse as part of a longer business trip to Iceland. This was by far the better of the two hotels we stayed in, with large clean rooms, great food and excellent facilities.
Would return again, and would recommend to others

Stayed here to see the volcano while in eruption (it is very close). Rather plain but spacious rooms. Bedding a bit worn so the mattresses are rather soft and saggy. Headboard looked like something out of the '60s with buil-tin radio, etc.
Since it is rural, very quiet other than for the country noises.
Didn't dine in the hotel as the prices were a bit steep and menu didn't look very appealing.

It is an old farm reconverted to an hotel and Guesthouse. You can sleep in a hotel with big, conformatble and ensuite rooms, or in the Ghuesthouse medium rooms wiht shared baths and with a big kitchen to share. We stayed in that one and it was fantastic, clean and quiet. They included breakfast.
You can also walk around with hens, ducks and horses.
Staff very friendly
