Grand Hotel Duca di Mantova
Reviewed 29 March 2012

The room itself was very nice and really clean: new furnitures, bed was very comfy, big bathroom, mix of hardwood floor and carpet. Yet, the walls are paper thin. From 5:30AM on people (Asian tourist group) were leaving their rooms and slamming the doors, talking and blowing their noses - all easily heard even though I regularly wear ear plugs when travelling. Of course, it may have been just bad luck re the noise, but it is a very big hotel so I can only assume that tourist groups may stay quite often. While having breakfast, 3 buses took off with Asian tourists around 7.30AM.

One thing the hotel could definitely do something about are those noisy elevators. My room was next to one and the hydraulics were extremely squeeky.

Coming back to the hotel after dinner around 11PM, we (my colleagues and I) noticed this really bad smell outside the hotel and unfortunately, the same smell (it really smelled like sewage) was in my room even though the window was closed. I got up in the middle of the night to get myself a wet towel to cover my face as the smell was unbearable.

The next day I complained to the guy at the reception desk but he did not seem interested and he certainly did not even offer an explanation re the smell. SO, I can only assume it was not an exception and it is always smelly.

Breakfast is more than just average - not much choice and even though their is enough staff, they never cleared the table.

Never again will I stay at this hotel!

I was booked in to this hotel for a recent work trip.
It's built on the top of a shopping centre, which sadly feels like it is in the middle of nowhere.

The hotel itself is actually very nice, and is clearly very new too.
The rooms are a tad on the small size but have a big bed, desk, sitting area, and a decent sized bathroom.

I was there for 5 nights and despite my best efforts I didn't fully get to grips with the light switches in the room.
I never did succeed in getting all the lights in the main room on at the same time.
The bathroom doesn't actually have a light switch, instead it used a sensor to detect that you are in there. Be careful though - because there is a red cord switch next to the bath, and my guess is that if you pull it someone will come and knock on your door to help you out of the bath.

I only ate in the restaurant for breakfast. There was decent selection of hot & cold food.
My only complaint of this is that the cups were far too small for breakfast, and I would love to see them put some decent sized mugs in there.

There is internet in the hotel. Sadly you have to pay for it.
There is also a Sky tv service, with various pay tv channels available.
Other than the usual news channels in English I couldn't find much else to watch, so I only used this once.

The staff were really pleasant, and helpful.

The surrounding area isn't that great, and the 20 minute walk to a nearby restaurant is probably not something you should do on your own.

The shopping centre is pretty extensive, and you can buy some really decent wine in there for less than two euros a litre...!!!

Room Tip: Make sure you are not next to the lift, and ask to be in the main building too.

Beautiful hotel but just plain too far away from the centre of Milan. The map we were given was for a sister hotel but we weren't told that, no help given about getting to the centre except get a taxi - 15 euro to the metro (when you can get a bus for 1 euro as we found out later). First night at dinner there was no chef, so were offered cold dinner i.e salad etc or hot dinner of penne pasta with tomato sauce or "beef and chips" ie. steak and chips. I can go anywhere and get steak and chips I wanted Italian food but there was nowhere else to go as we were in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't even nice, it was also very stingy portions and we were charged 18 euros a head plus drinks. No complimentary drink for appalling service - 15 minutes between sitting down and the waiter coming to explain the lack of chef (no drinks order) then 25 minutes before meal arrived and a further 15 minutes after we put down our cutlery before he came back to see if we wanted anything else. I had frankly lost the will to live

Breakfast was OK, average to be honest but the lack of tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms in some hotels including this one really annoys me. The shopping centre referred to in other reviews was OK but doesn't make up for everything else. Very disappointing and if we were staying longer than two nights I would have sourced another hotel.

Room Tip: if you want the middle of nowhere go to this hotel

This hotel is possibly the best hotel we have ever stayed in, the staff are amazingly helpful (especially Leonardo the barman who told us how the trams worked and where to go to avoid Milans extortionate drinks prices!!).
When we arrived we where immedialtely checked in and taken to our room, which I have to say was immaculate, very well presented and spacious, we then went down to the bar to have a well earned drink (hire car stress caused by sicily by car (avoid this company at all costs!!!!) As soon as we entered the bar we where greeted by Leonardo's happy smiling face and told to take a seat while he brought our drinks over, he then proceeded to answer any question we put to him about where to go and what to see in Milan (He's also an A C Milan fan so if you're there this week he will be a very happy chappy after they stuffed inter at the weekend!!) He explained that due to the Hotels location we needed to get a bus and a tram into the centre (only takes 15 minutes and well worth it to stay in this hotel!) not only did he explain where the bus stop was but he also circled everything on our map so we knew exactly where we where going.
When we finally returned to the hotel later rthat night we noticed that there where no towels in the bathroom so phoned reception who had them there in under 3 minutes.
The beds are not only huge but ridiculously comfy (so much so I am ordering a new bed this week because mine just doesn't cut it anymore!!!)
The following morning we went down for an "American style" buffet breakfast and had a choice of everything from bacon and eggs to cake!!! Cake for breakfast!!! who could ask for more??
I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone I meet. Don't let the distance from the centre put you off staying here!!!
