“A fine hotel - with an exceptional drawback”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

By my standards, this was an expensive hotel - to the tune of 439$/night. By Cambridge standards it was probably fair.
Anyway, the hotel was as Marriott places go: friendly, well-trained and attentive staff all around, clean rooms and a convenient Starbucks situated in the lobby.
If I was very critical, I would say that the place could do with a brush-up - it came across as having been around for a while.
However, the location was superb for ny purpose (a seminar at MIT - a 5 minute walk away) and plenty of good eateries around.
Also, it is just a short walk to Beacon Hill and a slightly longer walk to Harvard - so for touristique activities it was optimal.
One thing that annoys me in certain places, this included, is the absence of a free wi-fi service. There is free wi-fi in the lobby but in the rooms you will be charged extortionate fees. Result: a large amount of time spent in the lobby reading mails and scanning the Net while this could be done in the privacy and cosiness of ones own room. There's free wi-fi in every Starbucks in the country and access to the internet is, these days, a basic necessity. So I cannot comprehend why such an amenity does not come at no charge in a hotel of this standard and price level. And it is a real drawback in the overall rating of the hotel. I suspect that it has to do with to aspects. One, prices on search engines appear lower this way. Two, being a business hotel it is probably assumed that one's employer pays whatever anyway, so what the heck! Having spent an entire section of my review on this small matyer, I conclude that it is a minor area to correct - but with a major impact.
Just to end on a high note: the hotel is right next to a metro/tube/subway station (the 'T') - this is a real advantage!

We stayed here with our kids ages 12, 9, and 7 with 2 queen beds and a roll-away bed. The hotel is modern and has friendly staff. It's near the red subway line which was convenient for sight-seeing. The hotel was quiet at night and our room had a lovely view of the sea.

There was some hair in the corner of the bathroom floor that remained even after the maid had cleaned up after our first night. Everything else appeared clean.

The beds and pillows were comfortable, although it sure seemed like a smaller queen bed than the queen I have at home, if that's even possible.

We traveled to Boston many times but this has to be the most convenient location we have ever stayed at. The Subway stop Kendall right at the entrance of the hotel. The valets and front desk staff were very accommodating. Our room on the 20 th floor looked out over the Charles and Boston. The concierge was awesome in directing us to places to eat and go. We did not eat in the hotel because there were too many other great places to eat. All within walking distance or by the T. We booked through Marriot and got a great rate, even the front desk said this better than they could do right there. Would definitely go back here because of location and the quietness away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Boston.

Room Tip: Book through Mariott and request a river front room.

We spent our 51st Anniversary night at this hotel. We had an excellent room with a view of their back garage rooftop garden. Service was excellent and they sent us a complimentary bottle of champagne and an excellent cheese plate with assorted cheeses and crackers, fruits, nuts, and preserves. Bed was very comfortable. We required an accessible room and the one we were provided was excellent. Plenty of room in bathroom and easy to get around the room. The morning breakfast buffet was also excellent. It was kept full and constantly refreshed by the friendly and efficient staff. Had an omlet station and you could order waffles and pancakes from your server as well as any other kind of eggs beyond the scrambled on the buffet. There was also a full service bar and restaurant in the evening but we did not utilize them as we went to a special restaurant for our anniversary.

Rooms are clean, staff is fine, food is okay. This is a good but not memorable or impressive property. The price seemed high for a property that is just "good", but that may have more to do with the location than anything.

Dear MNwanderers – Thank you for your honest response. Our location and offerings do make us an attractive and high demand location for travelers coming to the Boston/Cambridge. Especially in the summer this does affect availability at certain price points. Please keep an eye on Marriott.com as we do have packages available that you may be interested in. We hope to see you on your next trip to the area.

I'm an MIT student and stay in this hotel 2 night every 2-3 weeks. The best way to describe this hotel is that it will meet your reasonable expectations but will not impress you. It has everything you need - clean, service, decent rooms etc. but nothing out of the ordinary.
On the value side this hotel would not be inexpensive though - sometimes prices just blow my mind at $499/night or even higher.
Location is great - just next to the Subway station, a lot of good restaurants nearby.

I love this hotel - it is in a great location (train station beside it, starbucks inside, Champion restaurant with outdoor seating and a delicious Cafe Italia (vodka/espresso), and they are doing more renovations with a food court nearby.
Not to mention all the places you can walk to from the hotel - fantastic.
Down side
No reasonable parking -$40 a day, no free in room wifi (but you can get it in the lobby or starbucks)
I love how the rooms are situated so that everyone has a corner window - great sunshine, clean rooms, couch to sit on, they have lamps with outlets -good for those of us who wish to charge our phones on the night stand.
I had a concerning experience with a Marriott Buttes in Phoenix with mistreatment of animals, so I have been a bit concerned about the Marriott name . . . hoping they improve their policies with animals.

Room Tip: If you like to take the stairs they do this annoying thing where they close off the esculator at nig...
