“Low Point on Summer Road Trip”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

We're loyal HIE customers and have stayed at well over a dozen HIE properties around the US over the last 15 years or so, but this particular property ranked somewhere between forgettable and mediocre on our personal HQM -- hotel quality meter. On the "pro" side, the staff was earnest and actually quite helpful in calling taxis for us. Housekeeping, too, was diligent. But the overall impression was that, despite a recent 'facelift', this is one of the most tired properties we've ever stayed in. The location is unappealing. The parking is inadequate as are the lobby and breakfast room considering the relentless onslaught of hopeful guests. The interior hallway on our floor was rank with the smell of staleness...the room was no better. Value for money? Not here. This property tarnishes a brand that we feel has so much to offer.

Room Tip: Find another hotel to avoid disappointment.

Dear SurLaRouteEncore -

We are very sorry that you did not fully enjoy your stay with us. Given all of the positive reviews that our hotel receives, yours came as a disappointment to us. Thank you very much for praising our hardworking staff and we wish you great success in finding another hotel that better suits your needs on your next visit to Boston.

When we first pulled up to the hotel we thought we were in a not so great area but the hotel was clean and nice and the area wasn't bad. The train to Quincy Market area was just two blocks away and was only $2.65/each way. Plus a cab ride was only $10 from Quincy Market. The hotel room was very comfortable. The continental breakfast served in the morning was awesome! It is a busy place but there was lots of food to choose from. All in all we would stay here again.

Dear R M -

Thanks for choosing to stay at our location and we are happy that you enjoyed your time with us. While we are located on a busy street, I think you illustrated that our hotel is a great choice for travelers who want to visit Cambridge and Boston. With the T just three blocks away, getting to Downtown Boston is very easy. Thanks for sharing your comments and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Overall rooms are great, some members of the staff are not as friendly and don't dress too professional but it was the weekend I am guessing they didn't want to be working right?

One of the things I found very uncomfortable and needs to be addressed immediately is that parking is very limited once it gets full guests have to park on the other side of the street but that's not the reason why I am leaving a low review. I was waiting in my car for about 30 minutes after the front desk guy told me to park across the street to my surprise the same guy knowing that parking is limited walked to his car and moved it from guest parking meaning employees park on the guests parking lot too?...how is that possible? I thought that was a little unfair and very unprofessional.

Like I said I my stay was great.

Dear Millie -

Thanks for you comments. As you saw, we are a smaller property in a city location and parking is an issue from time to time. On most nights, one, if not both of our lots, have available parking in them. In addition, the few employees of ours that do drive also use the same lot, as they would at most hotels. I am sorry that this bothered you. Once again, thank you for choosing to stay with us.

Stayed in this hotel twice when visiting MIT and the hotel is a good solid choice and good value for money - rooms are clean and spacious, staff is friendly. The neighborhood the hotel is located in not visually nice looking with few trendy places to visit - that being said this neighborhood didn't look unsafe so I would not worry about this if that's your concern. The Subway/T station three blocks away is on the green line - with very strange schedule and inconvenient rail cars - so if you're travelling from the Downtown Boston with some suitcases be prepared it will take you time and some inconvenience before you get to this hotel's closest subway station. Another option is a 15 min to the red line with more conventional schedule and rail cars.

Dear Denis L -

Thank you for pointing out how great our location is to the T. We are sorry that you had a hard time with the trolleys but the T subway system is very easy to use and as you saw, gets you to anywhere in Boston. We appreciate you choosing to stay with us and look forward to seeing you again on a future visit.

If you're going to Boston and don't mind staying a bit on the edge of town, this hotel is for you! It's clean, modern and close to the Green Line T and buses. The breakfast, while crowded, was very good with both hot and cold options. The hotel is about 8 mins from Harvard Square by car, or 15 minutes by Bus 69. Try finding the hotel on priceline or hotels.com. We got a 2 double room for an average of $140per night over 3 nights. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We usually stay at the Tria in Cambridge, but decided to stay here for college visits and it was a great decision! This hotel comes with free parking, wifi and breakfast, and is close to a food store and a small mall.

Dear mythreechicas -

We could not agree with you more - we are a better option than Downtown Boston and are located only three blocks from the T, making the city that much more accessible. As you mentioned, we are also very close to MIT, Harvard, and Tufts so we are a great choice if visiting colleges is on your agenda. Thank you for letting us know about how comfortable you were while with us and we look forward to seeing you again when you visit Cambridge again.

I have seen unfair review complaining about the neighborhood and the elevator service of this hotel.
Here is the deal with those two factors: (1) just like many things in and around Boston, the immediate neighborhood is old, but not "shady" as some suggested. It is a safe neighborhood, and I walked through it a few times on the way to Cambridgeside Galleria. I even got a few "good morning" from neighbors on the way. (2) this is not a five star hotel where you pay AT LEAST $250 a night, so it is not going to spend money on two of those highspeed elevators. Consider it has 8 floors to be serviced by two elevators mostly used only around breakfast time, give them a break about long elevator wait.
The front desk people are friendly and helpful, the breakfast was decent (it's complimentary, so keep that in mind), but could be a little slow in keeping up with surge in demand. Oh, the kitchen staffs are friendly and helpful, too, and they kept the place tidy and clean.
The room we stayed in is sizable, clean, modern, and well equiped. The ONLY complain I have is that they don't have an in-suite safe. The soundproofing is very good, as we don't get a lot of hallway noise.
We stayed there around the July 4th, and as we were on the 8th floor "facing the river", we got to watch the fireworks from the comfort of our room unobstructed. Keep that in mind when you book this hotel.
There is a large supermarket just 3-4 blocks west of the hotel, so you can pick up bottled water over there, As for going anywhere else, if you want to head toward Harvard, a bus is only a few blocks away on Cambridge. If you are heading downtown, the Greenline starts only blocks away (if you are planning the take multiple trips during the day, even within downtown, get the daily pass, consider the 7-day pass if you are staying long enough).
The Cambridgeside Galleria as well as the Museum of Science (also where one of the Duck Tours begins) is within walking distance. If you are a ZipCar member, there are plenty of ZipCar around for you to choose from within 10 blocks.
Next time we are heading to Boston, this little gem is surely will be at the top of our list.

Room Tip: If there will be fireworks during the time you are staying there, ask for a room on the 8th floor fa...

Dear CZLai -

We could not have said what you did any better - we are a great value for anyone who does not want to overspend while visiting Boston and Cambridge, yet wants to be close to all of the historical sites and universities that our area offers. Most guests save even more money and don't bring a car with them - your point about the 7 day T pass us absolutely correct. It is the best value for many of our guests. Thank you for choosing to stay with us and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

Okay, the neighborhood is a little busy as some have noted. The hotel is crammed on a tiny spot and there isn't enough parking in the lot. But the neighborhood isn't really unsafe...just a little urban.
Now that we have that out of the way, once you walk in this hotel you will change your mind. It is spotless, welcoming and the staff goes out of their way to make sure you have all you need.
And I mean the entire staff from manager on down. There is a jar of warm cookies, a bowl of apples and a large carafe of fruit water in the lobby. The rooms are immaculate and the beds extremely comfortable. The breakfast is free and plentiful. Need anything? Just ask and the staff will grant your wishes.
And Boston is expensive. This hotel is a real bargain.

Dear Catherine N -

We could not agree more with your comments about our hotel. Yes, we are in a city location but as you pointed out, our hotel is next to a residential neighborhood with restaurants and is just 3 blocks from the T into Downtown Boston. I think many guests are pleasantly surprised when they stay with us as our staff is extremely friendly and is willing to take time to show our guests how to get around and what to make sure they see when they visit the city. We offer great value with compared to Boston and we appreciate you mentioning that. We thank you for our comments and look forward to having you as a guest again soon.
