“Hit or Miss.”
Reviewed 6 November 2012

The menu is limited the pizza oven was closed and some times the food was great other times bad. I think you have to be careful what you order, so I can't really recommend eating there unless you have to.

“Best restaurant in Cala Gonone”
Reviewed 4 October 2012

Excellent service and good value. The terrace restaurant at Il Nuovo Gabbiano is definitely the best place for dinner in Cala Gonone. The menu is unique to here, not the generic (and all too extensive) tourist menu found at almost all its contemporaries in the area. The choice afforded is still excellent, and dare say caters for most tastes, however it evokes quality and freshness as opposed to catering for the masses. The squid ink tagliatelle here was even better than the same dish in The Kitchin. Over five days staying at the hotel here, we dined here the first night, then endeavoured to sample some other local (highly recommended) local restaurants over the next few nights, only to return again on the last night of our stay to firmly agree it was the best on offer in the area. Brilliant food, great wine, warm, friendly and attentive service and decent value for money to boot.

“Francesca Pisanu - chef extraordinaire”
Reviewed 3 July 2012

When I asked Francesca Pisanu how many stars she would give the restaurant at Il Nuovo Gabbiano, she replied, "You see those guys at that table over there? They've been here 4 nights in a row. Those are my stars."
If you are going to be in Cala Gonone this summer, you're in for a huge treat. Not only is it a great spot for swimming, exploring the stunning coastline and for venturing inland on this fascinating island but it is where Francesca Pisanu, originally from the village of Orgosola (a whole story on its own with all its wall art), cooks up a storm on a daily basis.
Despite the fact that she is a talented chef with experience both in Italy and abroad, she has no airs and graces about her. She has trained her staff herself (Arnaud used to be an electrician), and they all work together as equals. She doesn't believe in a rigid hierarchy in the kitchen - she shares her recipes and expects everyone to be able to prepare them too....we all do 'a bit of everything,' she says.'If there are pots to be cleaned and I am free, then I will do them. You can't be a clock-watcher if you're to do a good job.'
Francesca believes that to create exciting food, flavours should not so much blend as meet in each new dish. Over-tasting can destroy this, so she trusts to her knowledge of the different elements in her cooking and lets them speak for themselves.
We were treated to the entire starter menu in one evening. What a delight:
Scallops with creamy cauliflower sauce - melt in your mouth
Fishcakes with Thai sauce - fantastically fishy
Smoked swordfish with Parmesan shavings and rocket - fine salty flavour
Fresh locally sourced prawns with battered aubergines, courgettes and peppers - light and delicious
Pan-seared tuna in a sesame crust with cucumber noodles - beautifully tender
Mixed seafood salad with mussels, winkles, octopus and prawns - perfectly presented
Mussels in a chilli tomato sauce - very tasty
One of Francesca's many specialities - star-shaped dusky grouper pasta
Spinach gnocchi with smoked swordfish and tomatoes - unusual but it works
Marinated citrus salmon - tangy and fresh
Mussel and clam soup - taste of the sea
Yes, it was a lot...but, you know, each course was so delicate and extraordinarily tasty that we just spent the whole evening savouring the best meal we've ever had.
Thank you Francesca!
