This hotel is positioned at the very south end of the town of Cala Gonone, away from any noise of the street. The rooms are well appointed and extra spacious. We stayed in a standard room with a sea view -- the view was terrific, the ceilings were high, and there was even a small table and loveseat in the front area of the large room. There are beautiful flowers throughout the property, and the hotel staff keeps several cages of canaries. Breakfast is sufficient (and reminiscent of a German B&B). The breakfast seating area on the deck boasts an open view of the sea.

From here we travel north up a very steep, winding road to Cala Cartoe. This beach was easy to find and a great place to spend the day. Bring water and snacks b/c the drive takes about 30 minutes.

Next, we drove and parked at Fuili (spelling?) beach, where we caught the hiking trail up and over the cliffs to Cala Luna. We highly recommend this hike, if you're up for the challenge. It took us about 2 hours each way. Hiking shoes would be nice, and at least tennis shoes are a MUST. It was also interesting to watch the rock climbers along the way.

Great hotel -- friendly friendly staff.

We would stay there again if we returned to Sardinia.

This hotel has a family feeling about it, from the cosy “living room” styled bars and pubic areas to the unique rooms. We were offered Suite A which is done in a Venetian style and has two large windows looking to the sea and a bathroom with walk-in shower and Jacuzzi. This is not a modern hotel but one which has charm and class where you feel totally at home.

Around the rooms is a lush garden area with flowers, birds and even a turtle pond! All this is set right on the sea and at the start of the town’s Main Street lined with shops and bars. The town is buzzing at night but never too loud. A few minutes’ walk away from town leads to pink sand beaches and cliffs. But the beach in front of the hotel is stunning as well!

We didn’t do the ½ board and we should have, the two meals we had in the restaurant were wonderful. Our favourite part is the hotel manager and his “I am the menu” tag line, he basically tells you what they have and you can choose what you’d like and how it is prepared – that is some great service! All the food is fresh from the sea, made to order and then served by a charming multilingual staff. Breakfast is an ample buffet with an omelette station.

The great thing about this hotel is you can have your food your way. We dined on the terrace overlooking the sea and the moon under a canopy of grape vines, can’t get more romantic!

This hotel is an overpriced joint.
We (2 adults + 2 childen) were assigned a cave room without natural ventilation and a small window opening to a patio; we could not open the window because of the mosquitos.
In a nearby hotel we found an excelent room with a balcony facing the sea at less than half the price.
When we presented the complain the manager and the owner were insensitive, ironic, paternalist and almost arrogant. They have no sense customer relationship and are blind to reality. I had to pack and leave the hotel at 23.30 with the two small children and loosing a lot of Money.
Be carefull with your cancellation policy.

I was surprised to read the review of this "Terrible" hotel by LondonDonkey. We stayed here for a long wedding anniversary weekend (4 nights) in July 08 and loved it. The hotel is a bit of a maze on several levels and really they could make a bit more of the garden. But our room (39) had a sea view and room to sit outside. The room was perfectly decent size with good air con (just as well as it was 39c outside). The staff were charming and helpful. Yes, the ample manager is a bit of a "character" but he was welcoming and friendly. As others have said, there is no dinner menu but we were offered the choice of today's fish, a meat course, range of pastas, antepasti etc. There certainly was a priced winelist, and when we asked for a recommendation the manager's suggestion was good and reasonably priced. Its well worth spending a day on the hotel boat (35 euros a head). Ten of us spent an excellent day sailing through turquoise seas, stopping off at idyllic beaches accessible only by boat, and we even saw dolphins very close by. Highly recommended

Cala Gonone is a beautiful part of Sardinia and I would defnitely recommend staying there for a peaceful and relaxing holiday. HOWEVER, do not stay at this hotel!! The staff are rude and unhelpful and it's dirty! We had the unfortunate experience of dining at their restaurant one night as a part of our holiday and thank goodness, we had chosen to stay elsewhere because I can honeslty say that it was the worst meal we have ever had. After waiting for an interminable amount of time, we were finally led to our table where we requested a menu. We were then told that they did not have menus and that we should choose either meat or fish and they would bring you what they wanted. I have had this happen before so we did not have a problem with it until we received the antipasti for starter. This consisted of a range of carpaccio and some prawns. The Carpaccios were tasteless and bland and the prawns were soggy and full of grit. We had waited a long time for these starters to arrive and during this time, had even been approached by one of the staff to ask for our dessert orders!! This just goes to show the level of service you can expect from this hotel - we hadn't even started our meal at that point!! After the starters, we decided enough was enough as they were absolutely inedible but the point of no return came when one of the other couples dining nearby came up to our table to warn us off the goulash for the main course, describing it as "absolutely disgusting!" We asked to pay for what we had consumed up to that point and got up to leave and the manageress who was exceedingly rude decided she would charge us 30 euros for the starters which is ridiculously expensive for Cala Gonone and definitely did not reflect the poor quality of the food. Considering our obvious disatisfaction, I would have thought that they would have been able to offer us some kind of discount considering the circumstances but instead, they decided they would rather make a scene in the middle of the restaurant and not accept our criticism of the food. It was embarrassing the way we were treated. Having worked for years in the hotel industry, I found their attitude to be totally unacceptable and also took issue with the fact that the restaurant is dirty and somewhat unhygienic with dogs roaming around under the tables. Customer service is non-existent at this hotel and I have heard bad reports about the rooms as well. I am taking the time to write this review in the hope that we might save other travellers from enduring a similar experience. Do yourself a favour, stay somewhere else!

We stayed four nights at the Costa Dorada, Cala Gonone, having arrived there after staying three nights at the Hotel Sa Muvara just outside Aritzo. On entering the room (No. 19) we were a little disappointed by its size, compared to what we had been used to at Sa Muvara. However getting over our initial disappointment it was clear to see that the room was clean and adequate. It would appear that the rooms vary in size as another couple on our trip were in No. 18 and that room was quite a bit bigger than ours. Another couple had a room with a sea view and that was even bigger again. So if a large room is required go for the sea view (upgrade cost applies). We stayed with our room as we really only used it for sleeping in, being out all day trekking.

One of the best features of this hotel is its position, just across the road from the beach and sea ,at the quieter end of the beach road.

The other area where this hotel excels is its restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious with freshly caught fish featuring on the menu on several evenings. Traditional Sardinian fare is available including roast suckling pig and lamb with lemon. Tasty pasta dishes were also available. The service (silver) was excellent. The waiters/waitresses were very pleasant and attentive. When the weather was warm enough it was possible to have breakfast (which was extensive and included an omelette making station) and dinner on the terrace overlooking the sea, a very pleasant way to start and end the day. My one criticism of the restaurant is that there is no wine list. When we asked for one we were told that the wines the owner recommended would cost no more than 16 Euros. He was true to his word, the white costing 13 and the red costing 16. However it would have been nice to have been able to decide what we wanted to drink based on the description and cost, for example we may well have tried a more expensive wine on the last evening. The owner of the hotel is a larger than life character and nothing was too much trouble for him.

I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. It must be noted that we stayed there in May and not in the busy months of July and August therefore cannot comment on what it would be like in the peak season.

If you are looking for an excellent guide in the area then try and seek out Flavio Catte. I am sure the owner of the hotel could help you. He was our guide and made our holiday a truly memorable experience.

The real charm of this hotel is its position, especially if you request a sea view. Our room had a little terrace, especially useful for watching the moon rise over the sea while sipping a nightcap! Room was a little on the small side but interesting decor and very clean (chambermaids visited twice daily). Excellent breakfast on the ground floor terrace - weather permitting. Manager's presence was a little over-bearing at times but he is hepful and organises very reasonably priced boat trips (on his own boat). The beach is a minute's walk away - ideal for early morning dips.
