Reviewed 28 September 2013

We spent 10 days at this hotel in September 2013 and would say that, objectively, its four star rating is accurate ; the five stars we have given it reflect how much we enjoyed our time there and our appreciation of the hardworking, friendly staff. The size of the hotel (34 rooms) is perfect in the sense that it is big enough to be able to offer a range of facilities and excellent breakfasts, but small enough to be intimate and personal in its service. It is comfortable and attractive, but is not luxurious or formal in a way that might make you feel ill at ease or frightened of breaking something. Unlike a recent reviewer, we would not have wanted, for example, a member of the bar staff to be constantly asking if we wanted anything when we were relaxing by the lovely pool area. Staff are discreetly available should you need anything or wish to have poolside service......only a matter of 10 metres or so away from the pool.

The magnificent views down over the bay may be enjoyed from the pool area, the dining terrace, the balconies of the sea view rooms (a 'must') and from tables inside by the windows. The mountains too are striking and the hotel garden areas attractive and well-maintained. We appreciated the fact that the owners used local stone for the building and the pool area boundaries; similarly, the neutral colours, both inside and out, have been chosen to blend in with the surroundings, with good quality light wood and bamboo furniture, mottled terracotta floor tiles and some accents of charcoal in the ironwork bedheads, mirror surrounds, curtain rods.

We did not encounter problems with our room, although I would agree that plumbing noises can carry and the air conditioning did not seem very powerful. The room, like the rest of the hotel, was very clean and there were three good towels per person, changed daily. The bed was comfortable, the view lovely and there was enough space to bring in the whicker balcony table and chairs in the evening if we wanted to sit socially, talking, having a drink or watching tv. Balconies are fairly large and the ideal spot for picnic lunches after a strenuous morning by the pool or on a beach! The minibar offers enough space to store small amounts of food and drink and has a good, integral safe. As well as the wardrobe, there were plenty of other surfaces and drawers to store your holiday bits and pieces neatly.

Facilities in or around Reception included charming and patient multilingual staff, Signora Paola and Cristina, to help and advise you (or tutor you in Italian on request!); newspapers , magazines and bookshelves with books in several different languages (the hotel has very cosmopolitan guests...we encountered English, Americans, Australians, Scandinavians, Germans, Italians, French while we were there); beach towels and umbrellas, toys for the beach and good quality lounger cushions for the pool area. Wifi in Reception and pool area was very good.

Breakfasts were exceptional, especially considering that this is only a small hotel. There was a good selection of different breads, croissants, fruit flans, yogurts, cereals, cold meats, cheese, flavoured baked frittatas, hardboiled eggs, tomato segments, fruit juices, fresh and tinned fruit. Note for those with food intolerances: the Zizzone supermarket in Cala Gonone sells very good Italian gluten-free bread (Pane di Casale senza glutine), ricecakes, buckwheat cakes and a range of dairy-free milks. When we were staying, the chef had some gluten-free bread sticks, rice cakes and delicious gf fettucine and the delightful waitress Franca often took away the bread I had found and toasted it for me.

We ate in the hotel restaurant most nights, although we usually like to try different places on holiday, partly because we got lazy and wanted to avoid driving, but mainly because the food was very good and the service excellent. The charming Restaurant Manager has the perfect blend of friendliness and professionalism and is a real asset to the hotel. He was very patient with my desire to practise my Italian, even though he speaks five languages himself, and his advice with food or wine was always very good. Like many of the other staff, he worked very long hours, morning and night, day after day, yet his energy, attention and friendly manner never faltered. We particularly enjoyed the dinners we had on the terrace because of the romantic setting, but the Mistral whipped up partway through our holiday, so we ate inside the last few nights. One idea for the restaurant to consider would be to offer a daily Special(s) ,advertised in Reception, to attract guests who might have already tried their favourite dishes from the menu and didn't want to eat the same thing more than once.

All in all, we liked the Gustui Maris very much and want to say to our friends on the staff:
Tante grazie a tutto il personale per un soggiorno molto piacevole e rilassante.........speriamo di tornare un altro anno!

Room Tip: You will not regret paying more for a seaview :we had Prestige with Seaview.

We stayed in Villa Gustui Maris for 3 nights mid-september.
The hotel is overalll quite nice, nice view, nice pool but the rooms are extremely noisy. When you can hear your neighbor going to the toilets or snoring, you hear way too much!!!
The ladies at the reception desk are very helpful and very nice.
We only had breakfast (we didn't try the restaurant in the evening) and it was a very good one, pretty copious! You have a wide choice of things to eat, there's even a choice of teas!
Our room didn't have a balcony and that was a shame. Make sure you book a room with a balcony.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel but make sure you bring earplugs in you want to sleep!

Room Tip: choose a room with a balcony

We stayed here for 2 nights in September 2013 and had a great experience. We were allowed to borrow an umbrella with us to the beach and were recommended really fab beaches reachable by boat. The staff is wonderful, exceptional helpful and their English is extremely good, far better than I met elsewhere in Italy. Thank you for a lovely stay!

My wife and I stayed for a week at the Gustui Maris, and I've been struggling with how I would review the hotel.

My caution is that this is not a cheap place to stay, and if you're lucky enough to be used as we are to staying in 5 Star hotels, then there's a few things missing. So I'm going to post the negatives, but hope you will read on to the end, because I think the positives win out.

Negatives would be, slightly tired rooms, a tiny bathroom, with no bath and only a small shower cubicle, no English channel I could find on the TV (a blessing some might say), and always having to go and find someone to bring you a drink at the pool as opposed to them coming to ask if you might like something occasionally. Room service isn't really something the hotel is set up for, and the charge makes ordering just a coffee prohibitive.

So there aren't hundreds of staff running around at your permanent beck and call, but if you like a sense of peace and quiet, then this might be the hotel for you.

The owners are lovely, and if you stay more than a couple of days, you will by then recognise all the staff. Every one of them is kind, welcoming, and genuinely wanting you to enjoy your stay, right down to the waitresses, and including the night porter, whose charm is only exceeded by his moustache.

We reserved an exclusive room with sea view, and this is one area where the hotel really excels. The views are stunning, looking out across Cala Gonone, and across the bay to Cala Luna in the distance.

The pool is great, and there's plenty of loungers. The hotel when we were there was delightfully free of kids (sorry parents), and all the clientelle just seemed to want some peace, quiet, and quality time, in what is a stunning part of the world.

The walk back up from town is mildly strenuous, but if you're reasonably fit, and take it at a fair pace, then it's a cracking way to walk off some of your dinner before bed.

As food goes, the towns restaurants are fairly average in terms of offering seafood, pasta, and pizza's. The best food we ate at was actually at the hotel, and the stunning views from the terrace make it a special place.

This is a privately run hotel, and therefore has its own quirks and idiosyncracies, but for all that it's well worth a try.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a balcony, with a sea view.

A comfortable boutique hotel with a great view and swimming pool over looking the town and coastline. The staff were extremely helpful. Our dinner and the food generally were first class. The position is high above the village which is a decent climb if you choose to walk.

We booked a standard room in the hotel for six nights during September 2013. On arrival at 23:30 the staff (Mr Seffarino) was helpful and friendly. However, The room was disappointing (211). The light on the ceiling was broken, the shower had a two inch gap between the doors, which took three days to fix, with the gap getting smaller each day! The temperature in the shower fluctuated widely from scolding hot to cold. The bin in the bathroom did not open using the pedal ad there was no basic bottle opener, which should have been in all rooms. It was clear the hotel new of all of these faults as they immediately told us that we had been upgraded to a room with a balcony. What they did not say was that the balcony would have staff passing all the time (during the day) and was basically just around the corner from where the cleaning staff kept their trolleys and also where the rubbish was stored. We were forced to keep the curtains closed the whole time. I eventually complained and was given a new room for our final two nights. The temperature issue with the shower still remained even in the new room and the soundproofing of the rooms was highlighted to us when we could clearly hear the conversations of other guests in adjoining rooms. I discussed this with one other guest a middle aged man who mentioned that he had been told to keep his voice down by another guest when he was just chatting with his wife in his own room.

The staff did everything they could to put things right. However, given the long list of issues that there were with our initial room I refuse to believe that they were not aware of most of them already. They were simply playing the upgrade game in the hope that we would not complain. In any case when I downgraded to the room that we should have got it was superior in most aspects so it was clear that the upgrade spiel was just a bluff. This made the whole stay a bit disappointing. My guess is that most guests who stay for a few nights will not be put out enough to complain and leave feeling moderately happy. I am however amazed that this hotel is ranked number one in Cala Gonone. All it proves is that there is no competition. This is not a hotel for a prolonged stay as eventually the weaknesses and lack of attention to details becomes glaringly obvious. I would not recommend this hotel and, as is probably already obvious, I would not stay there again.

Room Tip: If you are told you have a free upgrade be very afraid!

This is a great hotel with stunning views over the bay. The staff are very friendly and offered lots of advice about where to go whilst we were there. Delicious breakfast with just about everything you could want which we ate on the terrace. Would definitely like to go back.
