“One of the best...”
Reviewed 10 October 2008

Four of us (aged 45 to 78) stayed here in late September 2008
The hotel is modern, clean and minimalist: stone, wood & glass.
What sets the hotel apart is the friendliness of the staff - it's a family-run affair and you feel like guests of the family.
Although full, we often had the hotel to ourselves during the day and the loudest noise all week was the goat bells on the hills.
Breakfast is good by Italian standards (no fry-ups) and can be taken on the terrace with fine views of the bay. Meals in the hotel restaurant at night are perfectly fine (we found it best to stick to simple pasta, fish & pizza dishes in both the hotel & eateries in the town).
We liked Roadhouse Blues (not as bad as it sounds) as a place to eat & drink in town (London Pride on tap).
The hotel is a 20 minute uphill walk from town (perfectly do-able if averagely fit) & the hotel mini-bus goes up & down twice a day & did collect us late one night by arrangement.
Good wallks along the coast path north of the hotel (and south thru the town).
Cala Gonone is quiet and suprisingly unsophisticated - like discovering The Med must have been like in the 60's.
The hotel is a gem; all-in-all one of the best hotels I've stayed in.

I stayed at this hotel for a week in July 2008 on a family holiday. There were 11 of us altogether, ranging in age from 13 to mid-50s (although most of us were in our twenties/early thirties). As such we had a range of different priorities from the holiday and it took us a while to find the right hotel – I think we struck gold with Villa Gustui Maris though as it offered pretty much everything we could want.

The hotel only has about 30 rooms so it is quiet and relaxed, with a real family-run atmosphere (most of the other people staying seemed to be young couples ), but it's also easy to get to the village of Cala Gonone for a meal, a drink or the beach. The rooms (both the bedrooms and the communal areas such as the restaurant and bar) are modern, clean and fresh. The pool is a good size and neither this nor the surrounding sunbathing area got too crowded while we were there. Everything seemed really well-maintained.

We were on a B&B rather than half-board option so only had dinner in the hotel one night. The food in the restaurant was good quality and there was a reasonable choice – I'd probably not recommend going for half-board though, just because there are lots of restaurants in Cala Gonone so it's fun to be able to try different places out (more about this below). You can either eat inside or on the terrace, which has great views of the bay and the hills, both for dinner and breakfast. Breakfast itself offered a good choice of the usual continental fare – cereal, breads, pastries, cheese, ham, plus extras such as quiches and cakes. Eating out on the terrace with that amazing view made a lovely start to each day!

What really made the hotel for me though was the staff , who were so friendly and helpful – although some spoke better English than others it was all better than my Italian! I felt they went out of their way to be welcoming. They even gave us a round of drinks on the house on our last night and presented my mum with a bottle when she checked out.

The hotel's location has both advantages and disadvantages. It's on a hill slightly above the centre of Cala Gonone, which means it has lovely views as well as being a little bit cooler and a lot quieter than the village centre (as there's a few open air bars etc in the village, I can imagine the music could be a bit disturbing if you were staying in a hotel down there). The disadvantage of this is of course that it means you have to climb the hill to get back to the hotel! Most of us found this fine during the evening, although a little more uncomfortable during the heat of the day. In the evening, it took about 10 minutes to walk down to the start of the village and twenty to walk back up. My father, who has mobility problems, couldn't manage the walk but there are parking spaces in the village so you can always drive down.

The village of Cala Gonone itself is a little more modern than I was expecting. It was a nice place though, with a little port and lots of restaurants etc. There's also a place that can organise water sports/climbing etc (although we didn't book anything there ourselves). Most of the places we ate out in were very good value with excellent food, although as an aside we were very disappointed with San Francisco , which had been highly recommended by the Rough Guide – we were served the worst wine I've ever had (virtually undrinkable), had very slow service (I know service can be more laid back in Italy than in the UK but this was really slow) and found the menu quite misleading (cheese and spinach paste turned up with a bolognase meat sauce on the top – not good when you are a vegetarian). So that's one to avoid in my opinion!

There are two or three beaches in the village itself, at least one of which offers pedaloes etc to hire (we didn't got to all of the beaches in the village ourselves). They are a little pebbly though so for better, less crowded beaches you can drive to some further away or take own of the many boat trips to one or more of those only accessible by boat (all of which are beautiful with amazingly clear blue water so I'd highly recommend doing this). Also check out the Bue Marino caves, which are spectacular. The staff in the hotel are happy to give you advice about all of this.

All in all, a really lovely hotel and a very relaxing holiday. Although I was there in a big group, I think it would have been equally suitable for just myself and my husband or if we were with, for example, just my parents. We didn't want to come back!

We spent a lovely week at this very friendly hotel. The rooms are all clean, tidy and new looking. Our room had a small balcony which was nice for sitting in the evening.

The staff are all very helpful and friendly. Breakfast also perfectly fine.

Cala Gonone is really pretty and we recommend a boat trip to the nearby beaches. Lots of nice, reasonably priced restaurants in the town and numerous supermarkets.

Yes the walk up the hill is steep but not unmanageable - don't let it put you off!

Recommend hiring a car to get about in Sardinia - it's well worth getting out and about.

Can truly recommend 'Villa Gustui Maris'.

This hotel is clean, pleasant, friendly, modern and excellent value. It is a little 'stark' in the way of all Italian resort hotels but the charming staff more than make up for this. We recommend it highly. Our only slight disappointment was with Cala Gonone itself - it's a somewhat scruffy thriving seaside resort but we even succumbed to its slightly rundown charms and enjoyed our stay a lot. The Gulf of Orosei is spectacular and we recommend a boat trip. We paid £103 per night for a standard double with garden view (all we could get) and would happily pay more for a balcony and sea view.

Absolutely perfect!! Staff lovely, accomodation perfect, setting 5*.

We hired a car and were supposed to travel around but we found the pool so relaxing and peaceful, that we stayed there all day!!

Bit of a walk into town, 10 mins in, 20 back (up hill) but the resort is perfect, small but with ample beach and restaurants, totally what we were after with us both working in busy London and Cala Gonone is just wonderful.

We went onto Alghero after 4 nights here and it felt as though we had arrived in Benidorm. Although we love Alghero old town and had been there before, travelling from there from ot break in Cala Gonone was like walking into another world. A stressful one!!

Cala Gonone - very very chilled and we will definitely go back - 4 days felt like 4 weeks and I don't want to go back to work tomorrow!!

If you have any questions, please direct to my hotmail account, leefisher1978@hotmail.com.

Hope this helps

We were very surprised with this hotel, as it seems difficult to find a reasonably priced, but good quality hotel in the area.

The room was comfortable, but definitely opt for a sea view. The only problem we encountered was that the air conditionng was a bit pathetic.

The hotel is in a great location, with easy access to a series of local beaches by road to the north and cala luna and cala sissine to the south. The staff speak both English and German, which is very impressive.

The hotel has a great terrace with a wonderful pool and sitting out at anytime of the day is great, the view is wonderful.

We only ate breakfast in the hotel. This is nothing special with the standard Sardinian offering of Ham, Salami, Cheese with Bread Rolls, Fruit, cereals with yoghurt and cake. We didn't eat dinner in the hotel restaurant, but town has a huge selection of restaurants. Having tried a few I would recommend the "Road House Blues" and "Pop Hotel".

We got lost on the way to the hotel as we initially drove striaght into town, but if you just keep going up the hill, even when you've lost faith you will suddenly see it.

A very nice and quiet hotel at the edge of the village, with only modest traffic. Sheep are more noisy...Comfortable and clean rooms, but only downside are the thin walls that makes you hear much of the bathroom noises from the neigbours.

Beautiful scenery and architecture make up for this, together with very helpful and friendly staff who speak reasonable English and better German. Kitchen ok with some typical local dishes, all freshly prepared.

Hotel attracts almost no familes with small childeren, so we had a very quiet time for two weeks in June.

As the hotel is on the slope of a rather steep mountain, a car is recommended to get to the village. No beaches in walking distance, but very good one is within 5 minutes drive. Richard and Ronald Schuurman - The Netherlands
