“Beautiful hotel in a stunning part of Sardinia”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

Cala Gonone - a relatively unheralded yet magnificent part of Sardinia, with so much to offer to a couple seeking beautiful beaches, water, relaxation and even a bit of adventure. This hotel is a perfect springboard for exploring this beautiful region - the perfect place to come home to at the end of a day at sea, exploring via scooter or just sunbathing at the beach.

1. Staff - Paula and Vincenza were wonderful, with a genuine customer-service ethos. At the core of this hotel's philosophy is to make the guest as relaxed as possible, and these two embody this perfectly.
2. Location - Perched on a hill, this hotel has a truly stunning location - magnificent mountains behind you, and 180 degree views of the beautiful Gulf of Orosei in front of you. This spot is worthy of special occasions, celebrations or proposals. Yes, you have to walk 15 minutes to get to town - and this can get sweaty in hot weather - but we began to appreciate this as a way to compensate for our gastric over-indulgences.
3. Pool & Gardens - the front gardens offer stunning views of the bay and a gorgeous pool just about large enough to do laps in, with a small waterfall adding to the serene ambience. On days we weren't exploring, this is a great place to unwind and read a book or enjoy the view.

There were no real negatives here at all.
ROOMS-The rooms are comfortable although not luxury. They are large and clean, most with balconies and decent bathrooms. We didnt have a balcony, although I would recommend getting a room with one - as the views here are too die for.
FOOD - breakfast was simple but tasty, with some local and original dishes making this better than a regular continental breakfast, e.g. local Sardinian cheese, Italian omelettes. The only disappointment was that the quality of the coffee was not great. Lunch options are limited to baguettes / paninis, but the one time we had this, it was very tasty. Dinner is very good, and most couples choose to take this outdoors as its such a beautiful setting.

I highly recommend this hotel and hope to come back some day.

1. For trips / scooter hire / kayak hire - Prima Sardegna, with an office in the town centre , were very reasonable and very helpful. Chiara gave particularly good service
2. For motorboat (Zodiac) hire - Skipper - well-priced and helpful. A boat should cost you roughly 120-140 Euros for a day's hire in peak season, with fuel as extra. If you prefer to travel in a group with a driver, this company also offers these tours. We took our boat to Cala Mariolu, Cala Biriola and Cala Sisine - all as beautiful as each other; but we later regretted not stopping at Grotto Azzurra, where you can apparently swim in the crystal-clear turquoise waters of this small cave.
3. Restaurants - many were good, but we particularly liked La Favorita Ristorante (huge variety of pizzas and all very tasty) and Bue Marino Hotel rooftop restaurant (great views and very tasty food). As a vegetarian I was surprised at how well I was catered for at the various restaurants, with veggie options clearly indicated on most menus.
4. To do - Cave trips - Grotto de Bue Marino was really beautiful, eerily quite and empty caves with crystal clear waters running through, where seals once came to give birth away from predators.

If you're contemplating where to go in Sardinia, and you've come across Cala Gonone - dont hesitate - its a remote but truly beautiful part of the island, where you can relax and unwind or explore nature at its finest.

Room Tip: Must choose a room with a balcony to fully enjoy the wonderful location of this hotel

What we liked:
- The view over the bay: the hotel is high up on the hill so you have a wonderful view over the bay.
- Very friendly staff at reception.
- Large rooms.

What we didn't like:
- Being on top of the hill is nice, but it means you have to walk 20 minutes uphill after dinner in town. I would stay closer to the main town, by the water where all the restaurants are next time.
- Stingy policies around beach towels: they give you a beach towel and tell you that you need to keep this for 3 days. Honestly a hotel at that price and 4 star rating should know better. Fighting to get an extra towel really left a sour taste.
- Stinginess also extended to breakfast - not enough fresh, healthy food I think. Felt a big cheap and my coffee wasn't great.
- Our aircon barely worked.

Quite frankly, being a 4 star hotel and paying as much as we did, we expected more.

Just came back from a week spent at this hotel and I can agree with all reviewers who found this place to be simply perfect. The view is great, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly and there are a lot of great beaches reachable within a couple of minutes by car.
Tips: definitely rent a car in order to try the beaches, restaurants and the agrotourisms in the area.
take the boat trip to the beaches that are not reachable by car. book it at the hotel, it will cost you 10 euros more, but you will get the best guide
in case you want full privacy, take a room with a separate balcony, the majority of them have a shared one
thanks again to all of the staff from Gustui Maris, we will return!

Just returned from 7 nights at the Hotel and would agree with many of the reviews on here.

We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon, it was relatively quiet and we were quickly checked in and given a lovely sea view room. Having paid for a sea view room I would have preferred a room at the front as I imagine the views were much better. The room was clean, modern and had a really nice feel about it. Bathroom was bigger than expected and cleaned everyday.

The pool was excellent, always plenty of sunbeds and we were given towels to use every couple of days which was a nice touch, as well as umbrellas to use at the beach. Staff were equally as excellent, very attentive and friendly and could not do enough for you. Breakfast was a standard continental buffet style, which had plenty of choice. I do think not serving lunch/snack type food throughout the day was slightly disappointing I am sure they would also do well at this.

If you prefer the beach then there are two beaches to the north which are around a 15 minute drive

Location of the hotel is great, just up a (slight) incline, although on the 7th night of walking it I was slightly relieved that being the last time. Views are incredible and the hotel area has a very relaxing and tranquil feel. We didn't eat at the hotel for dinner and preferred to venture into the centre of Cala Gonone where there is plenty of choice. Restaurants I would recommend are the Hotel Pop ( amazing spaghetti pesto!) and Ristorante Pizzeria La Poltrona.

Within Cala Gonone itself the boat hires/excursions are heavily promoted and well worth doing. Renting a boat is straight forward enough and requires no experience. I would recommend anyone doing this to aim for a bigger boat. Ours was a little on the smaller side and when the sea decided to get a little choppy it was a bumpy ride! The coast itself is beautiful and the scenery breathtaking, try and go as early as possible as the boat loads soon appear!

From what we saw of Cala Gonone, this hotel certainly delivers. Would highly recommend

Room Tip: Go for a sea view room

My husband and I stayed for 4 nights at this wonderful hotel. Our room was clean and comfortable and Paola and Daniela were so lovely and patient with me practicing my Italian. We loved the breakfasts sitting outside, with views over the gulf, and the fact that the hotel will happily lend you a beach umbrella and beach towels (replaced as needed). Plenty of parking on the street and a short walk down to the harbour. We would happily recommend staying here.

Hotel is absolutely gorgeous. We had three nights there. The best hotel view of Cala Gonone by a mile! Staff we're amazing, lots of beach stuff to borrow, great advice on where to go and where everything is. Bar is open as late as you like which is also great. Would recommend to anyone and will definitely come back

We stayed 4 nights in a standard room. The service at the hotel was great - we were asked everyday if everything was okay. The breakfast was good with a fair selection of cereals, meats, cheeses, fruit and cakes. Bar prices reasonable. The only negative was a slight noise from the central air conditioning unit which could be heard in our room wherever any room (both ours and others) had the air-con on. It don't keep us awake though. The hill everyone talks about is around 800m up a steep but walkable incline. I actually enjoyed the walk back each night after dinner. From what we saw this is by far the most aesthetically beautiful place to stay in Cala Gonone.
