We had a short stay at this wonderful small hotel in May. I have read the partially critical reviews, and like to add my views - note that the entire management and staff changed recently, including the chef!

Service - the staff was just wonderful and went out of thier way to provide extras wherever they could (special welcome drink, information on wineries, nice things for our 3 year old)...

Food - the dinner meals are just fabulous, I am not sure what happened some time ago but regardless, the standard was extremely high, and they prices completely justified.

Wine - they have a great selection and know about wine.

Rooms - yes they are smallish but adequate, we had a kid with us, so we should have booked the larger option (there are 3 bigger rooms in the 2nd storey, for just a bit more).

Hotel - the entire design, layout, standard is super.

What made us especially comfortable was the fact that this hotel caters mainly for couples/romatic kind, but made us feel very homely with our little boy.

Room Tip: Most rooms are the same/smallish but nice. Book the larger room on 2nd floor if you need space!

Beautiful little hotel with a private beach area + pool with gardens. It's very charming and they offer good food and wine. We rented a car and took some trips around the island which is beautiful (e.g. Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo) - there a so beautiful beaches around with crystal clear water.
The hotel is very calm, at the end of a road, next to the beach. It's mainly visited by couples or small families - a perfect stay to relax and enjoy nature's paradise!
PS: we stayed there in June 2012.
PPS: take a mosquito protection with you ;)

On arrival my wife thought she had died and gone to heaven. It is the only hotel in a small bay with its own private sandy beach overlooking several islands. It is a boutique hotel and although the room was small it was adequate for a one week stay. The hotel was very clean and the staff always willing to oblige. There was no shortage of sun beds either in the garden or on the beach. It was a gourmet tasting menu, not perhaps to every bodies liking but my wife and I thought the food was superb. I would not recommend it to a family with young children seeking fast food. The hotel is a little isolated so one needs a car. A special hotel for those seeking a relaxing holiday in an idyllic setting.

Room Tip: Make the best of your stay and ask for a sea view.

We just returned after a fabulous week in Sardinia staying at La Coluccia. Upon arrival we were greeted with a big smile from Claudia and shown around while our bags were taken to our room. Our room was small, but very clean and had everything we needed to include toiletteries, bathrobes, slippers, and fridge. The breakfast buffet was the same everyday but they did accomodate my request for egg whites which I certainly appreciated. All of the staff went out of their way to answer our questions and give us information we needed. The hotel was one of the cleanest we have been to. The beach was very small but nice and not crowded when we were there. We only had dinner one night at the hotel as we wanted to sample the local cuisine. It was an interesting menu but I did feel it was overpriced. But that was the only thing I felt was overpriced. The drinks at the bar were what you'd expect to pay at a hotel, but they were generous and tasty. I would certainly come back to this hotel if it was only myself and husband again. I wouldn't bring our teenager or any child for that fact. There were a few kids there but this hotel is best suited for adults who want peace and quiet. It is a hidden gem away from touristy places and offers much seclusion. To go to a town that has shops, bars, restaurants you'd have to drive 5-15 minutes. Our goal was relaxation after my husbands deployment and we certainly had it! Thank you to the staff for making it a wonderful stay!

What a disappointment this hotel was. The main thing that makes this place worthwhile is the location. Situated one hour north of Olbia it is in a small village with beautiful views where you can enjoy a small beach which by the way is not private contrary to the hotel's website. Not that this was a problem, just inaccurate. The rooms are small and fairly basic. Our 'superior' room with sea view had an overgrown hedge that surrounded the balcony so that the sea could only be seen if you were standing. This hotel seems unloved, the fixtures and fittings are tired and in need of refurbishment. Our room on the ground floor had the septic tank inspection covers just outside which gave off an interesting aroma whenever a loo was flushed. This was also a problem at the poolside if you sat in the wrong place. The grass was uncut and it didn't look like it had been attended to all year.

Worst and most disappointing of all was the hotel restaurant, described as 'gourmet' and was most definitely not. it was neither gourmet nor a 'restaurant' as it offered no choices. Dinner (and half board is compulsory here) was a set, four course tasting menu with no options. The food was all canape size tasting portions and of not good quality, and the most bizarre entrees always mixing meat and fish. for example swordfish and turkey curry on the same plate! No wine list available, but the wines suggested in the region of 50 euros a bottle. Bar was expensive. The head waiter was particularly brusque and rude. The breakfast was standard hotel fare, unchanging and no different to what you might experience in a 3 star or airport hotel. Despite many reviews stating that there was a fruit and vegetable buffet at dinner this was not on offer when we visited. The best thing about the restaurant was the view.

The hotel staff had no knowledge of the local area, there was no local information available and the spa that is advertised was not operating although treatments could organised by special arrangement.

We were very disappointed with our stay; this hotel does not merit a 4 star rating and the food was so bad we ate out locally for 4 nights rather than suffer the food in the hotel.

This area of north east Sardinia is really lovely and we found lots of good local restaurants where we could enjoy fresh local food. We look forward to visiting Sardinia again but would not go to this hotel.

Room Tip: If you want any sort of a view you need to upgrade to a superior room otherwise you face the back of the hotel and the dark, dusty carpartk

Hotelphilosophy, Direttore at Hotel La Coluccia, responded to this reviewResponded 25 July 2013

Dear Ms. Sarah P.,
first of all thank you for sharing your opinion on TripAdvisor. We take the opportunity to respond to your review directly from the Direction of La Coluccia.
Following a check, we know that our staff took care of your requests concerning the restaurant proposals offering alternatives and trying to satisfy your specific exigencies. We gave you our complete assistance to find all the available food possibilities, and during the dinner on 09/06 we offered you a bottle of Mamunthone wine and myrtle as a sign of attention and hospitality.
The new hotel management company has established high standards in the food and beverage service completely renewing the proposals, and today we can say that we are having a positive feedback from our guests.
The dishes that you define "bizarre" are the results of research and innovation. We are aware that they can be appreciated or not, tastes are always tastes. We would like to emphasize, however, that the menus proposed by our restaurant, both in their presentation and selection, are based on local products and high quality raw materials with the exclusive use of fresh ingredients. In the kitchen our chefs boast curricula of excellence with significant experiences in starred restaurants.
But given the attention that we pay to the food service, we have already informed the food & beverage department in order to further intensify the quality control through direct feedback.
The white sandy beach of the hotel is private. There is a lateral part of it that is public and open to external visitors, but this does not mean that the information on our website are incorrect.
The rooms are in line with the concept of the hotel, minimalist and essential. If during your stay you had expressed your disappointment, we would have certainly found the solution with a change of room. The overgrown hedge that surrounded the balcony has the sole purpose to ensure guests' privacy and not to obscure the beautiful view of the sea.
Our concept of hospitality is guided by the continuous search for improvement to fully satisfy the
needs of our clients, therefore we regret that your stay did not match with your expectations.
However, from the satisfaction of many people who appreciate La Coluccia and the enchanting location in which it is set, we receive the right push to continue in our work, which aims to transform a simple
stay in Sardinia in a special experience, in a property that we can certainly define unique.
With our best wishes,
The Hotel Management.
