Carytown is a very walkable area of Richmond. Good chocolate, no chain restaurants, bike shops (3 within 100 feet of each other!), frozen yogurt (2 next door to each other) and plenty of free parking.

Carytown is a favorite among the locals! I spend at least one evening a week here! There are so many delicious, privately-owned restaurants and novelty shops, not to mention the fun, small-town feel and historal richness down Cary Street. Definitely go here!

Another strip of cafes, gift shops, and local boutiques that is reminiscent of many cities (think S. Congress in Austin, TX). Many people enjoy this trendy spot, but it just made us dizzy walking in and out of all the shops that sell different versions of similar goods- antiques, vintage clothes, stationary and gifts. I would return specifically for the toy store that had a large collection of educational toys, or the bookstore with unique titles. Some of the cafes are hit and miss- a few delicious, a few mediocre. We love supporting local business, but we caution those who are not lovers of shopping/window shopping.

If you are looking for a change of pace and feel like walking and seeing people from all walks of life, this is the area to come to. Plenty of stores and some restaurants. Parking can be quite a problem.
