“Nationally Known Kayaking & Urban Biking & Hiking”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

Richmond lies on the Fall Line. That not only made it an important center for commerce in Virginia but it continues to make it a great urban kayaking. But if you're not a professional, have a great ride or hike on the many trails on both sides of the James River or the Islands in between. There are pedestrian bridges that provide a rapids-view of the River and prominent but accessible ruins. Don't ignore the River on a visit here because it is a great cool and refreshing escape from summer heat and provides miles of exploration all the way to some of the cities famous sites including Hollywood Cemetery.

“The gem of Richmond”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

LOVE this river as it weaves its way through Richmond. White water rafting is fun - they look up and there are buildings! Usually class 3 & 4 rapids. We like to hike on Belle Isle from the Shockoe area, walking around Brown's Island is also a favorite. Bring the kids and enjoy this river.

“Lots of places to Play”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

If you go to 5th St. and turn right that will take to you the entrace to Belle isle next to Tredegar Iron Works Civil War Museum. There is a long bridge that goes over the river to the small island. They have recently built in handicapped ramps that go into the water! There are benches and a covered area for eating at the end of the island. There are rock climbing areas set up in the middle of the island. There are bike paths, and hiking paths. There is a wealth of history on the island as well. A great place to take the family for a day trip in the summer, or if you are local it is a great place to take the dogs for a walk.

Toward the South side of Richmond there is a spot called Pony Pasture which is a long stretch of the river on River Rd. where there are places to pull off the road and get in the river. There is also a large parking lot for kayak or tubing access. Close by is James River Outfitters which offer tube, kayak, canoe, and fishing supply rentals.

The James has a lot to offer every type of person.

“Great hike on belle isle”
Reviewed 9 April 2012 via mobile

Great semi paved trail With lots of rocks to scramble off the trail. Allowed me to take my older child off on the rocks in the river while my wife stayed on the trail with my younger ones. River looked good to me except for signs saying not to eat carp catfish and eels. Awesome place highly recommended so glad we went'
