A impressive fast flowing river, with rocks opposite Richmond that make passing it with a ship impossible, so George Washungton designed a canal system to bye pass the city and link the the river to another river, the Kanawaha, which was a key development for the City's trade. Sadly the canal is out of action due to la k of funds for repairs. Further along, between Scotland (a small comunity) and Jamestown/Williamsburg there is a free car ferry crossing I recommend if you are in that area.
