The historic James River is a nice attraction in Richmond. We enjoyed walks along the river! I cannot improve on the description in the James River Park system. "James River Park System... opportunities abound for strolling, whitewater rafting, paddling, fishing, tubing, hiking, mountain biking, trail-running, swimming, sunbathing, bird-watching, picnicking, rock climbing, rock-hopping, dog-walking, nature study, photography, even recreational tree climbing, snorkeling, camps, and other guided activities."

To get to Belle Isle, you have hike across a suspension bridge, which is situated above the James River, but below a highway. It's a little nerve-wracking, but adventurous at the same time. Once on the island, there are hiking trails, historical markers, dirt bike paths, an abandoned hydro-electric power plant, and easy access to rocks on the river. It's a beautiful place and my children love exploring.

Be sure to take the walking bridge over the James River to Belle Isle. You can also takes bikes across. There are paths all along the river, both through Richmond and Belle Isle.

A impressive fast flowing river, with rocks opposite Richmond that make passing it with a ship impossible, so George Washungton designed a canal system to bye pass the city and link the the river to another river, the Kanawaha, which was a key development for the City's trade. Sadly the canal is out of action due to la k of funds for repairs. Further along, between Scotland (a small comunity) and Jamestown/Williamsburg there is a free car ferry crossing I recommend if you are in that area.

What an amazing place to spend a couple of hours or the entire day!
From the canals designed by George Washington to the historic remnants of Belle Isle, this area is a great tourist destination. It is also a huge hit with locals.
There is some unbelievable mountain bike trails, climbing routes, jogging trails, a pump track and many places to just kick back in or out of the James River
