This hotel is located across the street from the capitol building and in the center of the downtown area. Short walk to most downtown attractions. My room/ bathroom were large and comfortable. The bathroom had heated towel rack and a bidet (if your into that sort of thing). I found the service to helpful and informative.

There are a few drawback however. One being the tiny elevators (they are rated for 10 people however i don't think more than 3 adults could be on one at the same time (and 3 is really pushing it). The walls are very thin in the rooms and can hear your neighbors pretty easily. They also play this lame music throughout the hotel which you can hear in your room form the hallway.

I think this would be a good choice if they lowered their rates. I'm all about "you get what you pay for" but i do not feel that this is the case with the current rates they are charging. If it was not for its great central location I would not recommend this hotel.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review .We thank you for the feedback. We are looking into feasibility soundproofing the room walls. Unfortunately we cannot increase the size of elevators as this building is over a 100 years old and these elevators were installed in 1956 and are in perfect working condition. They are inspected regularly by the city.
We value you as a guest, appreciate your patronage, and hope to see you again in the near future.

Sincerely
Anshu Kapoor

Traveled up to Richmond to see a show at the national. We were lucky enough to find Commonwealth on the web, and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed. Henry at the front desk was so friendly & polite, and made you feel very welcome! Probably the best desk clerk that we've ever met and we travel A LOT. The rooms were very big & comfortable, and the food from downstairs was delicious and a good value. The valet service was quick, efficient, and very helpful. Overall highly recommended.

I recently (last night) stayed here for an event in Richmond. We booked with this hotel because of its proximity to the capital building. That was the only good thing about it. When we arrived we realized that the beds were not queen size, but double beds. The key cards work after about 10 tries so it makes getting into your tiny room even harder. The bidet in the bathroom leaked when you turned it on so we called down to the front to have it fixed. About 40 minutes later they arrived to fix it. Our friends were also staying in the hotel but they had a suite. The suite smelled like smoke and when visiting them we realized that there was puke or something like it on the side of one of the beds. When we went to bed that night we pulled off the comforter, because I doubt they ever get washed, and noticed a blood stain on the blanket. We called the front to get a new one and when they brought it they just had me leave the stained one on the floor outside our room. It was still there the next morning. The blanket they brought us wreaked of smoke and had a few holes in it, presumably from cigarettes. Needless to say we slept with just the sheets. Breakfast was a complete rip off but the waiter made it tolerable because he was surprisingly polite. It was 9 dollars for the cold buffet and 12 for the hot buffet. I understand it is the city, but come on, your rooms are awful and you are charging over 10 dollars for a crummy breakfast buffet! When we spoke to the front desk in the morning, after they avoided asking us about our stay, they seemed like they could have cared less. We did receive a 10% discount because of the poor quality but not amount of money off could change my mind about this hotel. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY FOR THE LOCATION. This hotel was awful, dirty and the staff is careless and rude.

This is a gem of a location and great value in Richmond (across from Capitol). As reported by other reviewers, the rooms and bathrooms are very spacious, but clearly well worn...lack of attention to detail in room cleanliness (dust and accumulation in corners, even in bathroom), a bathtub stopper that couldn't stay open, no room clock and no kleenex and finally...a TV remote that was too far from the bed to work were the negatives. The front office and car park staff were very friendly, eager to please and efficient. Given its location and cost...its a terrific value!

I stayed here for one night in October. While the lobby was slightly outdated, and yes the elevator is humoursly small, the room was a good size, the staff was nice, the bathroom was huge and it's a few blocks away from the bumping bar scene and higher class restaurants For the price, it was a great stay. If you are looking for swanky, stay at the Omni up the road (and pay $75-100 more a night!), but if you want to be close to the hubbub for cheaper, this is it!

I loved this hotel. We went to Richmond to watch my sister run the Marathon. The location was great for us to watch the event. We were welcomed at the front desk by ?Henry who was very pleasant. The rest of the staff was also friendly and accommodating - especially the valet service they were quick and efficient - never had a problem. The room was great, beds were comfy and the pictures do not do justice to how BIG the rooms are!! After the marathon we went back to the hotel - 7 of us and sitting in the living room recapping the day and we could have fit more people easily! Felt like home

Thanks for a great stay...
