“cold shower was nice”
Reviewed 19 February 2012

hotel wasnt bad but for $200 a nite a warm shower would have been nice the desk was less than apologetic for the cold shower said sometimes if you give it ten minutes the water gets hot after my cold shower my wife had a cold shower after 45 minutes no hot water. elevator is the smallest ,slowest ive ever been on. its like a big casket .they charge you $1.39 fora lipton or tazo teabag. ONE BAG. westin gives you tea for free in room. never stay here again better off at the hampton inn. this place is like a double-wide econo lodge. omni was only $10.00 more for stay and $10.00 more for valet. thier valet gave us hot stuff to do and we did not even stay at their place. recommend crowne, omni or doubletree instead if you go to downtown.

Room Tip: dont get a room here

Dear Guest
Thank you for your feedback, we investigated and found that one of the circulatory pumps had tripped and that is why there was there was an issue with the hot water in your room only.
I aplogise for the inconvenience caused.
Usually tea and coffee is complimentary in the rooms for the hotel guests. All rooms have tea/coffee makers. It is charged in the restaurant.

Please accept my apologies once again for the inconvenience.

Thank you,
Anshu Kapoor

I don't make it to Richmond often, but when I found out that I was going to be headed down last weekend, I made it a point to look up this hotel online so I could stay there again. The suites are clean, and the beds are the most comfortable ones that I've slept on in a hotel. The three front desk people that I interacted with were polite and happy to help with recommendations on places to eat. I cannot recommend the Commonwealth Suites more!!

This hotel is located across the street from the capitol building and in the center of the downtown area. Short walk to most downtown attractions. My room/ bathroom were large and comfortable. The bathroom had heated towel rack and a bidet (if your into that sort of thing). I found the service to helpful and informative.

There are a few drawback however. One being the tiny elevators (they are rated for 10 people however i don't think more than 3 adults could be on one at the same time (and 3 is really pushing it). The walls are very thin in the rooms and can hear your neighbors pretty easily. They also play this lame music throughout the hotel which you can hear in your room form the hallway.

I think this would be a good choice if they lowered their rates. I'm all about "you get what you pay for" but i do not feel that this is the case with the current rates they are charging. If it was not for its great central location I would not recommend this hotel.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review .We thank you for the feedback. We are looking into feasibility soundproofing the room walls. Unfortunately we cannot increase the size of elevators as this building is over a 100 years old and these elevators were installed in 1956 and are in perfect working condition. They are inspected regularly by the city.
We value you as a guest, appreciate your patronage, and hope to see you again in the near future.

Traveled up to Richmond to see a show at the national. We were lucky enough to find Commonwealth on the web, and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed. Henry at the front desk was so friendly & polite, and made you feel very welcome! Probably the best desk clerk that we've ever met and we travel A LOT. The rooms were very big & comfortable, and the food from downstairs was delicious and a good value. The valet service was quick, efficient, and very helpful. Overall highly recommended.

I recently (last night) stayed here for an event in Richmond. We booked with this hotel because of its proximity to the capital building. That was the only good thing about it. When we arrived we realized that the beds were not queen size, but double beds. The key cards work after about 10 tries so it makes getting into your tiny room even harder. The bidet in the bathroom leaked when you turned it on so we called down to the front to have it fixed. About 40 minutes later they arrived to fix it. Our friends were also staying in the hotel but they had a suite. The suite smelled like smoke and when visiting them we realized that there was puke or something like it on the side of one of the beds. When we went to bed that night we pulled off the comforter, because I doubt they ever get washed, and noticed a blood stain on the blanket. We called the front to get a new one and when they brought it they just had me leave the stained one on the floor outside our room. It was still there the next morning. The blanket they brought us wreaked of smoke and had a few holes in it, presumably from cigarettes. Needless to say we slept with just the sheets. Breakfast was a complete rip off but the waiter made it tolerable because he was surprisingly polite. It was 9 dollars for the cold buffet and 12 for the hot buffet. I understand it is the city, but come on, your rooms are awful and you are charging over 10 dollars for a crummy breakfast buffet! When we spoke to the front desk in the morning, after they avoided asking us about our stay, they seemed like they could have cared less. We did receive a 10% discount because of the poor quality but not amount of money off could change my mind about this hotel. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY FOR THE LOCATION. This hotel was awful, dirty and the staff is careless and rude.

This is a gem of a location and great value in Richmond (across from Capitol). As reported by other reviewers, the rooms and bathrooms are very spacious, but clearly well worn...lack of attention to detail in room cleanliness (dust and accumulation in corners, even in bathroom), a bathtub stopper that couldn't stay open, no room clock and no kleenex and finally...a TV remote that was too far from the bed to work were the negatives. The front office and car park staff were very friendly, eager to please and efficient. Given its location and cost...its a terrific value!
