“A Nice Stay”
Reviewed 14 October 2011

I stayed here for a conference. When I arrived my reservation was messed up (not their fault) and there were great about getting me into a nearby hotel for the first night.

The room was comfortable and clean. The hotel lobby is nice and big with bright, trendy decorating. The conference facility is very nice and the food was excellent.

I don't recommend eating at their sports bar as they food wasn't great, but it is a good place for a drink.

My other big problem with this hotel was parking. No parking at the hotel and they gave me no advice on cheap places to park nearby. I ended up spending a ton of money to park in the lot behind the hotel. If I come to Richmond for pleasure, I think I will look for a hotel that has parking and is in a better location. This location was DEAD and there are so many cute neighboorhoods in Richmond.

Attended a conference here in October. The location is not the best for restaurants although if you like to walk it is alright. There is a parking garage behind the hotel. Current rate was $17 for 24 hours weekdays, $8 a day weekends - but no in and out priveliges. The hotel offered me a rate of $21 a day for 3 days with full in and out included, but if you are staying over the weekend you save more by using limited street parking when going in and out during the day and putting your car in the garage overnight. Room was excellent. Bed with comforter was fine, tiled entry and bathroom, updated shower/tub. Decent view. If you are there M-F you may be able to use the lounge on level 15 to get a free breakfast and snacks. Otherwise the restaurant pushes the 12.95 breakfast buffet, not a bad option if you like the waffles/omlettes, but multiple people had problems getting their checks when they were done eating. Watch your bill. I was charged for breakfast even though I payed cash. They corrected it without much questioning. I would have no problem staying here again, especially for business.

As a platinum level Marriott Rewards member, this property is not up to the standard that I have come to expect from Marriott. I echo the comments of the previous poster about the lack of shuttle service, the $12.95 charge for in room internet service (having read his review beforehand, I brought my own air card and avoided this charge). In addition, if you need to print anything, you must swipe your credit card to use the business center, a $3.00 minimum time charge, plus a per page charge to print apply (unfortunately, I didn't bring a laser printer). A higher room rate with all services included would have been preferable to being nickeled and dimed at every turn.

The food in the sports bar was gross. The walls are thin and the hotel is noisy. To cap an awful experience, I awoke to find roaches parading across the desk. Avoid this place at all costs!

I stayed at this property in 2010 and the staff were fantastic. Matthew on the front desk was brilliant, as well as the two young English girls, Stephanie and Lauren I think. Always helpful when I was down in the lobby, or calling them for AYS. Went above and beyond to remember my name. Megan was also helpful. The restaurant manager, Gill, was brilliant. Great service!

Went back this year and I was checked in by an Austrian. Was not up to the same standard as last year to be honest. She said my name wrong a few time...and was to busy trying to do something else so rushed my check in. Made it up stairs and the key didn't work. She didn't seem to care though.

Had breakfast the following morning, and it was great! Would stay back there again but I think they should get the same great staff they had last year back!

Richmond Marriott was pretty much as expected. Marriotts are generally nice this one was not exceptional, but akin to the rest of them. Comfortable beds, reasonable amount of room, good shower and bathroom condiments. But wifi in the room was a charge (tho free in the lobby). The lobby had a Starbucks and a sports bar but no place quiet to eat. Breakfast buffet at the sports bar was reasonably priced but nothing to write home about. Location in the middle of downtown, right next to the convention center, was excellent, except for the hookers half a block away and the numerous empty buildings all around. They do not have their own parking garage, nor does the public garage across the street indicate that it is the place to park for the Marriott. A bit nervous about leaving the car there overnight-- Downtown Richmond isn't the friendliest looking place after dark-- but it was fine.

I was there for a conference and shipped books in and out. They had trouble finding my boxes on the way in-- I helped fix that-- and either they or Fedex completely messed up the shipment out. Can't blame the hotel for sure, but I'm suspicious they didn't keep the right label with the right box. They did give me the wrong Fedex forms to fill out.

Staff was nice, friendly, helpful. That was the best part.

Marriotts attached to convention centers are usually among the best hotels in a city. This one does not rise to that status. Although the desk staff was friendly, housekeeping was below par – in-room coffee was not restocked until requested, the brisk tapping of a metal object on my door each morning at 8:30 to see if the room was occupied was not appreciated, and a newspaper was delivered only one morning out of the three I was there. The small bath room is starting to show its age, and why would anyone place the shower head so low on the wall? – I’m 5’7” and it was at my eye level. Towels were thin and the ironing board – although nice to have – would not fold after it was opened. Public spaces were similarly mixed – the area by check-in was nice, but the lobby bar was lit like a cafeteria – bright fluorescent lights – at all hours, and never had more than the bartender to serve a full bar. Convenience to the convention center is worth a lot, but if there were a nicer neighbor this hotel might be less used. Be aware that the hotel and convention center is in a bit of an urban no-man’s land – the closest retail (like a CVS) was 10 blocks away, and restaurants open at night are a similar distance. The hotel does offer a shuttle to take you places downtown, but despite the airport being only a 10-15 minute drive, the hotel offers no airport service. A cab to the hotel from RIC was $27. Want an Internet connection? It’s $12.95 a day, unless you do your business with everyone else in the lobby. Stay here for convenience, but don’t expect a four or even three star experience.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better -- can get street noise.

We have stayed here quite often over the past few years. The staff greets us with a smile and by name. The rooms are city hotel rooms and fit the bill for a nice stay in the city. We would never stay anywhere else. We love the fitness center, starbucks, lounge & sports bar. If you have an event in the city and are looking for a comfortable place to stay look no further and book it !
