“Great place for a girls night”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

My friends and I visit Secco maybe once a month for dinner and wine. We love the fun, intimate atmosphere in Carytown and the small plates and food are great and inventive. Great selection of wines and knowledgeable waitstaff make this a wonderful place. Be prepared to spend about $70 per person for a good night.

“Good food - but mustard, mayo are too spicy and lemon vingerette is too sharp”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2011

Skip the spicy stuff at this restaurant - whoever is in charge of the spices burnt out their tastebuds!!!! It is way too hot for anyone to enjoy what they are eating.

Overall it is really nice. The beers are fresh and well maintained, the wines are as indulgent as they are varied. The fired chick peas are a pleasant staple.

Our last trip was for lunch. We ordered the rosemary roast pork shoulder and the charcuterie board. The cold cured meats were wonderfully presented on slate and the quality of the pork meat shinned through. The onion marmalade accompanying them was a fantastic touch - not to be missed!! It added an emphasis of sweetness inherent in the cold meat. The other chutney was so spicy-hot, you could not taste the cured meats - which is the point after all.

The rosemary roast pork sandwich is wonderful (so long as you wipe off any overly spicy, too sharp mustard - mayo). It is too hot. It chemically burns off the ability to taste. You have to remove it with a fork edge or knife. Unless I take the bread off and eat the pork with as little spicy hot sauce as possible, I can NOT taste the rosemary on the pork. It is covered up by the hard-hitting chutney. I wish the menu would offer to put burning and spicy condiments on the side.

The field greens' salad suffers from the same lack of delicacy. The thyme - lemon dressing should come on the side. It is so spicy, you have no idea if the greens on your plate are fresh or not. Worse, they all taste the SAME - drenched. Yes, they look fine and I am sure they all would have wonderful tastes if given the opportunity.

It is a wee bit pricy, but so long as you can taste the care that went into preparing the food, that is fine. It is a shame when a chef / restaurant goes overboard on spices (be they hot, garlicky, etc..) and doesn't let the food speak for itself. (It is good food, don't ruin it. Honor the animal and so on...) This goes double when pairing wine and good beers / ales. You want all of your tongue in good condition (not numbed or burned) so you can enjoy the experience and the sensation. I would rate the food higher, but it keeps being forced to hide behind condiments that overshadow it.

The atmosphere and decor is okay if a bit pretentious. It is classy, not fussy. The waitstaff are very down to earth and professional at the same time - a rare and pleasant combination.

“Great experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2011

This was my first experience with a wine bar of this type and truly enjoyed the different cheeses and wine. Love learning and tasting different things. I really had fun with the "funky" cheese. Also, this was the place I first experienced squash blossoms. At first I thought, "what tha?" but after tasting them, I'll definitely be back!!

“Heaven!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2010

Great stop for wine and cheese in the heart of Carytown! The wines were fabulous, and we were shocked at how reasonable the prices were (many, many options for $5/glass... some truly fabulous reds were only $9/glass) The cheese selection was fun, and there were also many tapas available if one wanted to make it a meal. We didn't stay for dinner, but what a great place to start your night out!
