Owner description: The American Civil War Museum is the nation's first museum to interpret the Civil War from Union, Confederate, and African American perspectives. Discover a new way of looking at our shared national history that explains much of who we are as Americans today through our signature exhibit, In the Cause of Liberty.

It was fascinating for me and my family, as northerners, to learn about the Civil War at this Richmond museum from the three perspectives offered: Northern, Southern and African-American. Fascinating artifacts, clear displays and engaging videos brought the history alive. The Confederate flags for sale were surprising, but the wide range of books showed an intellectual commitment to the many perspectives on the War Between the States.

There was nothing we disliked here. It informs us as Americans what type of people we might be today if it weren't for those who truly fought for freedom and equality. We spent over 2 1/2 hours in the center and every minute was well worth it.

This museum covers the civilian angles of the Civil War - the way of life, challenges that were faced for both North and South. Located next to the Tredegar Iron Works/National Battlefield Visitors Center it's worth seeing for first-time visitors to Richmond but if you're pressed for time, visit the National Battlefield Visitor Center and pass on this one.

We visited this museum together with the iron works.

Well worth the visit. Would have been nice to take a picnic to eat by the river.

Lots of information to take in, but left us wanting to know more about this interesting period of history.

So pleased we did this

Adjoining the National Park site on the Tredegar iron Works location, this museum with its displays and films gives a much more in-depth depiction of the Civil War and its causes from the perspective of the civilians and slaves of both the North and the South as well as that of the soldiers. We found several of the videos very moving -- in particular, the "100 Days". We felt it was a really worthwhile experience.
