We did a quick, self-guided tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of things to look at and read about, and it is still a current legislative location, which made it all the more relevant.

“Good visit for history buffs”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

Virginia has done a very good job of keeping the old Capitol Building's historic ambience within the grounds, the latest refurbishing included digging under the hill where it's located to put more office space undergound and freeing space in the old building to be restored to 1800s/early 1900s look, without having to keep building up around it. (Too bad that Richmond boxed in a lot of its old historic buildings amidst office/business/etc. highrises during the 20th century -- e.g. the Confederate President's House engulfed on 3 sides by VCU Hospital -- you lose some context). Lots of history in the building and in the artwork inside (including the life-size statue of George Washington done while he still lived, a very valuable artifact in itself). The library and executive mansion nearby are also worthy places to visit both for architecture and content.

“Impressed with building, grounds and the tour- informative and entertaining”
Reviewed 23 October 2011

We were impressed by the capitol building and grounds. We originally thought we would just stop in and walk around and have a quick visit but we didn't expect the free tour would be so good. The lady giving the tour was entertaining and very informative. We went through a few rooms and the historical events that happened there were incredible. We learned a lot and would highly recommend taking a tour rather than just walking around by yourself. Also, the new renovations were very well-done- inside of the building is beautiful.

We also enjoyed walking around the grounds of the capitol- beautiful monuments of famous Virginians, nice grounds and trees. We stayed longer than we thought we would getting pictures and walking around. Great thing to do in Richmond!
