Owner description: Inside the white, columned state capitol building, designed by Thomas Jefferson to resemble a first-century Roman temple in France, is the only sculpture of George Washington produced in his lifetime.

This building was designed by Thomas Jefferson while spending time in France. It houses the first ever statue of George Washington by a famous French sculptor. It also is the structure used for longest continuously held legislature in the entire Western Hemisphere! A wonderful place to pop in for a quick visit.

This capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and is the oldest capitol in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. The story behind Jefferson's design is fascinating in itself. It was modeled on La Maison de Carree, an ancient Roman building in Nimes, France. Jefferson's original plaster model is still on display. The most fascinating feature is how Jefferson managed to work his love of architectural domes into this Monumental Classic design. Much history occurred within the walls of this building, and the gallery includes busts of the 8 U.S. Presidents who were born in Virginia. The guided tour is definitely worth taking.

This building has undergone some recent innovations in technology. Getting a tour of the building was nice and the guide took you into each chamber and the Governors Office.
