Review of Deep Run Roadhouse

Deep Run Roadhouse
Ranked #110 of 1,638 Restaurants in Richmond
Certificate of Excellence
Cuisines: Barbecue
Description: Deep Run Roadhouse serves delicious regional BBQ, Tex-Mex and Comfort Food. All of our dishes are prepared daily from the best local ingredients with specialties including smoked meats and made from scratch sides. Owner Paul Hubbard is a native of the neighborhood in which his restaurant is located. Hubbard is a graduate of the Culinary Arts Program at Hermitage Technical Center and has held chef positions in some of the area's finest restaurants. Those family-owned restaurants taught him the importance of hospitality, attention to detail and creating an exciting, flavorful and unique menu. In 2009, he opened Alamo BBQ in Church Hill and realized affordable and comforting food appealed to a lot larger audience. What his audience wanted to eat became his favorite thing to cook. Alamo BBQ's success is a testament to the fact Richmond loves BBQ and comfort food. The two cuisines go hand in hand and are loved by all. Deep Run Roadhouse proudly offers the very best of both and provides delicious offerings for all cravings or diets. Its smoked portabello mushrooms, soups, salads and fresh made sides can satisfy any vegetarian or BBQ lover. All menu items are prepared daily, utilizing the freshest, local ingredients. Deep Run Roadhouse operates on one of Hubbard's favorite sayings: "Never think you're smarter than the food you cook, or the people you cook for."

TripAdvisor reviews brought me to the restaurant. While it was off the beaten path from Richmond proper, it was a reasonable drive. Service was very good. The meal--pulled pork and brisket with Texas caviar, mac & cheese and corn bread--was good. The meats were well prepared and very tasty. The portion size seemed small at first, but by the time all of the food was gone it turned out to be just right. The Texas caviar was excellent, a good mixture of flavors. The mac & cheese was standard fare, and the corn bread was a bit on the dry side. All in all, it was a good trip. I don't know if I would drive out of my way to return, but I would certainly visit again if I happened to be on that side of town.

I had the pulled pork, green beans and cowboy beans. For dessert, I had the incredible, made-on-site, Almond Joy pie. Everything was very tasty! The service was quick and friendly. We went on a Sunday around 2 pm for a very late lunch. The decor doesn't really say much, but it's clean and most importantly the food was excellent! If you like homemade sweets, that pie was to die for! My only complaint would be a little too much pepper in the cowboy beans, but some people might like that. I also would have liked one more sauce option on the table. The service was great, quick and very friendly. You've gotta go there! I'll be back to try more!

Since I stayed in the Short Pump area, I wanted to give this joint a shot since one of favorite reasons for visiting Richmond is the BBQ. The restaurant is located in a non-descript strip center off Gayton Road and if you blink, you might miss this restaurant but it definitely stands out in this strip center. You order your food at the counter and a server will bring it to your table. My server, Kellie was very good, personable and grew up near where I live in West Chester, PA. I ordered the three meat combo with the brisket, spare ribs and rope sausage and the brisket and sausage were my favs and it came with the Texas Caviar which is basically corn, black beans and lettuce and of course, their Collards which were interesting because they put pulled pork over the greens which is different than your traditional greens of hamhocks and turkey bits. The brisket was quite tender, you can see the smoke rings and was succulent. The sausage was different from Extra Billys and probably like it better at that restaurant. The portions are big at this place and I underestimated the serving size and could barely finish my platter. Kellie offered me another side of brisket or sausage and could not accept her offer because I was stuffed and even took some home in a to go box. The spare ribs were not too meaty and more fatty so I was not too thrilled but if you like brisket and sausage, this is your place. There was some music playing over the speakers but no TV's were a little disappointing especially with March Madness going on!

All in all, I will patronize this restaurant if I'm staying on the West End but will not go out of my way to eat at this restaurant especially with so many BBQ options to choose in RVA.

Opposite of other RVA barbecue pretenders, these guys are like local craft brewers except they smoke proteins. The Q is done their way and you'll enjoy it. First time I had their Q was at a party with catering. I was amazed. The restaurant presents a model of consistency. Although the menu presents "tex-mex" options like burritos, the multi-meat platters are close to what you may find in the deep-south. Favorites of ours are the smoked sausage (your saliva glands will run out of control), brisket, jalapeno mac & cheese, and the almond joy pie. Virginia craft brew on tap is a welcome addition to the menu. Check these guys out when you can.

Deep Run has a wide range of selections on its Tex-Mex menu. The mac and cheese can be spicy if you want, and is always rich and creamy. The pork barbq is tender and delicious. The brisket melts in your mouth and my husband is addicted to the collards. The pork Quaesadilla is very good as well. Portions are large and the prices are just right. Highly recommend!!
