“Wonderful Sicilian country escape”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

We had a wonderful long weekend in this house overlooking the sea. The house is lovely but the highlight is the hospitality of the hosts Maria and Fabrizio. Maria is a fantastic cook and the meals she prepared with local ingredients were amazing. Highly recommendable on all counts.

While reviewing some photos of our travels from the past year, i realized I neglected to write a review for Terre di Himera until now. We stayed for three nights at the end of last August, and our only regret is that we did not have more time here.

Maria, as noted by others, is a fantastic cook, and the one dinner we had here was probably the best meal we had in 10 days of travel in Sicily, as well as being reasonably priced. Breakfasts also were really delicious, and many of the provisions Maria and her two assistants use are picked fresh from around the property.

While it is quite easy to just relax here on the grounds and use it as a base to travel to some local beaches or other sights, it's also centrally located so that you can use it as a base to make extended day trips. We did two from here, one day to Agrigento and another to Villa Romana del Casale.

The initial drive up the hill makes the location seem a bit daunting, but once we had driven up and down a couple of more times, we realized it was no big deal. And the payoff is a beautiful place that is totally cool in summertime as it has unobstructed views in every direction. We spent 3 more nights after this in the center of Cefalu, and it would have been far better to spend six nights here and drive into Cefalu, which was about 20-25 minutes away, once or twice.

Accommodations were simple, clean, and comfortable. And everyone we met we while we there, from a couple of families with children to a woman traveling for business by herself, all seemed to be enjoying Terre di Himera as much we did.

We stayed three nights at Terre di Himera, and really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and fantastic food. The accommodation is well located five mins drive from the intersection of the main freeways, so makes an excellent base to access a significant area of Sicily. The room is spacious with a rustic feel, and with a good bathroom with very nice touches such as large fluffy towels, generous bars of soap etc. There are deck chairs to relax in in the garden and enjoy the views. There are only a few rooms, so everything is very personalised and friendly. But the real highlight of Terre di Himera is the lovely host Maria and her outstanding cooking. Breakfast is excellent, including freshly cut fruit salad and a wide range of cold meats, pastries etc. We stayed for dinner on two of the three nights and really enjoyed Maria's delicious Sicilian cooking using fresh local ingredients - some of the best food we had in our time in Sicily. Highly recommended!

Maria and Fabrizio were wonderful hosts. We loved our stay there and not only was our welcome warm and friendly but the food was delicious, imaginative and beautifully cooked with their home grown ingredients. If Maria, as we talked to her about, starts a cookery course there, we'd like to be the first to sign up. We wish them the best of luck, they deserve to do really well on their new venture.

From the moment I arrived I was enchanted. Our gracious host Maria greeted us with warm hospitality and was always willing to help out with anything. Our room was quite lovely with a preserved old world feel yet the bathroom was modern and beautifully restored. The details make the difference like the linens were very beautiful, sprigs of fresh jasmine were tucked here and there along with a few candies left by the bedside. Breakfast was so tastefully done I didn't want to leave, plates of blue were filled with the freshest fruits along with other local specialities like honey, chocolate and ricotta cheese cake. All of this made for a wonderful way to start the day. I strongly suggest having dinner prepared there as well. There is truly a sense of calm about the place if you are willing to take the time and soak up the views that stretch to the sea below and watch the moon rise above the wind swept mountains. Terre Di Himera is a welcomed retreat after a hectic but fun day of traveling to the surrounding country side. Maria and Fabrizio are outstanding in my book worth every penny! I only wish I could have stayed longer and gotten to know them better, I must return soon.

Room Tip: there is no pool.

Maria and Fabrizio Gambino were the most accommodating hosts at their idyllic retreat in a rural area near the archeological site of Himera. Location was easy to find, a straight shot from Palermo airport, and also perfect for our travels in western Sicily. Our room was large and well appointed with views of the hills and Tyrrhenian Sea in the distance. Maria’s Sicilian dinners were remarkable in their simplicity and flavors, graciously served on the patio overlooking olive groves. Our four nights were truly magical, and a wonderful respite that I am still dreaming of. Highly recommended for travelers who want a unique experience outside the hustle-bustle of Italian cities.

On our two week trip around Sicily we spent one night at Terre Di Himera. Sadly only one

Overall: You want to stay here. Once found, you dont want to leave. The hosts are lovely and their cooking amazing. The view fabulous over hills of citrus and olive trees.

The room: are decorated in a rustic but stylish fashion. Antiques are part of the decor and give it a certain charm. But you really dont want to spend too much time in the room, because the farm and its suroundings offer gorgious views

The bed: with a full stomach of ravishing home cooked dinner for 25 Euros a person and a delicious bottle of sicilian wine, we found our sleep quickly. it offered sufficient space for two and was of good quality

The bathroom: offered sufficient space for two and was, like the room decorated in a rustic style with lots of wood.

The breakfast: Now as we had tasted dinner, we knew we shouldnt be disappointed with breakfast and we werent. Being offered home baked cakes was just the start. Regional specialities were served at the table together with regional cheese and a good seleciton of fresh fruit.

Should you be traveling in this region of Sicily, it would be a pitty not to spend at least one night in this amazing place.

I for sure, am planing on coming back - soon.
