Stayed in Montaione for 3 nights as it is a fantastic spot to explore Tuscany from. Happened upon this pizzeria/restaurant by chance as someone had recommended we try the Pesce Rosso, which is down the road from I'Ciampa. Make sure you get a seat in the back part of the restaurant which has a wonderful view of the valley below.
The food - The focus is on local Tuscan fare and there is some fish on the menu as the sea is not the far away. We ate 2 dinners in this restaurant and were not disappointed by either. The first night we shared two appetizers - a beautiful carpaccio and a caprese salad. The carpaccio was different than what you would get in North America as the meat was cured not raw. It was still very good. The tomatoes in the caprese were extremely flavourful and the cheese creamy. For mains we had two pastas. The pasta was fresh and cooked to perfection. The dinner was so good we ordered dessert - tartufo and panna cotta. Dinner for two with water, 1/2 litre of wine and coffee - $70.
On the second evening we wanted a bit of a lighter dinner as we had eaten a big lunch. We ordered a large salad and a pizza. Having seen the pizzas the night before we realized that they are quite large and are a substantial meal on their own. Sharing a pizza in this restaurant is a good idea. The pizza arrived cooked perfectly, wafer thin and crisp crust, fresh toppings and wonderful creamy mozzarella. The restaurant brought the pizza to the table split on two plates as they realized we were sharing. The salad was just as pleasing with a variety of vegetables including corn, red peppers, carrots and various types of lettuce. The salad also had egg in it. Dinner for two this evening with 1/2 litre of wine, bottle of water and coffee - $35
Service was very friendly and quick. Many of the staff speak several languages - English, German, French and Italian are a few I heard while dining. They are ready to help you with the menu and share tables to make sure that things keep flowing efficiently. On the two evenings that we ate here there were a couple of larger groups but this didn't hamper the level of service, friendliness of the staff or the speed with which food arrived. A great experience all around.
The restaurant was very busy both evenings. The food and decor at this restaurant are simple and rustic but very good. The restaurant appeared very clean and well maintained. There were a number of locals in the restaurant, including a very large family gathering on the second evening. Go early (by 8 PM) to be sure to get a table with a view.
If you are staying in Montaione you should definitely check out this wonderful restaurant with the great views.
