Fattoria Barbialla Nuova
Reviewed 1 December 2012

After a week of Italian cities this was just what we needed. Somewhere quiet to unwind and enjoy the Italian countryside. This is a farm where you can just chill out and enjoy the environment around you, the great walks and most importantly the food! Day trips to San Grimignano, Pisa Florence are all driving distance, but make sure if you want to see something specific that you check it is open before you depart.
My top tip: get stuck in to cooking some local cuisine... mainly the beef reared on the farm.
Thanks for a memorable stay. We will be back!

This place has incredible charm. A working farm, a beautiful and huge estate offering nature walks, visiting the animals etc. A charming apartment in a very rural setting. Cooking in a kitchen with an open fireplace - that is italianitá at its best. We bought a chianina t-bone steak from the butcher in San Miniato and grilled our own bistecca fiorentina right out the front door. However, la fattoria is not for everyone. Our apartment was not entirely clean. We had no tap water one day (which was appropriately accounted for on our bill without any discussion). The reception was not manned at all indicated times. This is italy...if you don't mind such minor problems, go for it. And plan to cook yourself at least some evenings and to stay in barbialla the whole day at least once. Geographically, it is not ideal for sightseeing, too much driving if you want to see all the tuscan must see's and return to the farm every night. But t h e place to enjoy italianitá, nature, the local villages and a selection of the tuscan highlights such as san gimignano, pisa, vinci and florence which are all easy trips from barbialla.

Room Tip: Brentina est is very good for two couples or a small family, but all apts have their sepcific highs...

We are glad to hear that this traveler had a lovely stay, though we are sorry he was dissatisfied with some aspects of our agriturismo. We agree that our farm may not be for everyone. The roads are not paved, the furnishings are mostly vintage, you do your own cooking and laundry, you are surrounded by nature which can mean the occasional spider or even wild boars foraging for fallen fruit near your home at night (!).
We do not offer hotel services such as concierge or room service - this is a working farm - but we do our best to make every guest feel at home and taken care of. When I saw that this couple was tired upon arrival, I arranged for a friend to pick up some fresh milk, yogurts and cheese which I drove up to their house for them that night.
The day that they came down to the office, the owner's partner was here. She wrote down all of their comments and explained how to get to the aforementioned butcher, drawing out a map and advising where to buy what. This is a small agriturismo located on a 1200 acre property and there are times that we need to check on something far from Reception, but we do make sure to have someone available at all times (24 hours of every day) for emergencies or problems.
We did have an issue with the tap water one day while these guests were here. All of our water is produced from wells on the property which then gets filtered and pumped with an internal system. One of the pumps switched off twice that day but, as soon as we were alerted, we fixed the problem within minutes. Our other guests had no issues with this but, as we saw that it had interfered with these guests' stay, we compensated them at check-out as mentioned.
We like to think that our farm is an ideal place for slow travelers that want to explore the whole of Tuscany. We are happy to give a list of nearby towns and recommended day trips to each guest as they arrive but also encourage everyone to spend some time exploring the property, whether in the forests or on the pastures, relaxing at the lake or feeding the pigs. We are within an hour's drive from Florence, Lucca, Livorno, Pisa, Siena, the Chianti wine region, thermal baths and the beach, though it is true that Tuscany is a large area that would be difficult to cover from any one destination in just a few days.
Again, our farm may not be for everyone. However, we find that when people are interested in exploring Italy and its traditions, tasting local dishes and wines, cooking with fresh ingredients from nearby farm shops, hiking through the abundant nature that surrounds them, relaxing in the sun enjoying the surrounding peace, learning about the history of area and visiting small medieval towns, they tend to find Barbialla Nuova to be a refreshingly authentic slice of Tuscany.

Barbialla Nuova offers a unique experience that you'll never forget. My boyfriend and I stayed here as volunteers, and were astounded by the level of personality and care that goes into each and every part of this magical place. The biggest differentiator is how Barbialla let's you truly experience the life of a Tuscan. You have the ability to drive an hour or less to beautiful cities such as Florence, Siena, Pisa, and San Gimignano, but then return to a more authentic part of Tuscany where you can take a quick walk in the woods, pick some fruit from the trees and tomatoes from the garden, and make yourself a delicious Tuscan meal to enjoy in peace and quiet. Kyre is an amazing host, really going the extra mile to make sure each guest is happy, and Guido, the owner clearly cares deeply about this property that has been in his family for such a long time. All of the families and workers on the farm really help to create a sense of community that I haven't seen anywhere else. Just know that it's a self catering facility so it's best for those who are comfortable finding their own way, though it's nice to know that management is only a phone call away if need be.

Word of advice: bring pants and good shoes so that you can safely explore the nature trails that wind throughout the property- they are beautiful and offer amazing new perspectives of the large farm. Also, visit the local restaurants recommended in the guide that they provide you - we weren't disappointed by any of them!

Room Tip: Apartments in Doderi offer the larger pool and beautiful views, but those in Brentina have more priv...

I have been recommending this holiday to friends ever since we returned!
The apartment was beautifully designed - simple but thoughtful and sensitive to the local environment. I came home with lots of inspiration for our own house..!
The area was wonderful to explore - San Gimignano, Volterra, Florence, Siena. We did short drives by car or took the train into the cities. For a couple with a new family, it was a great combination of relaxing agritourism and cultural city break.
We loved coming back to the farm every evening, always stopping to say hello to the cows (our 16-month-old daughter wouldn't let us drive past without stopping!). Once on the farm, it was a further 10-minute drive to our apartment, Brentina Sud. The apartment was perfect for the three of us (2 adults and one infant): all on one level, we could relax inside or throw open the doors and feel part of the landscape.
Kyre's welcome and hospitality was flawless and perfectly pitched - we knew she was there if we needed her; we trusted her advice and appreciated her sense of humour! All facilities were thoughtfully and unobtrusively organised - freshly baked bread in the farm shop, filtered water to fill your own bottles, barBQs to borrow if you needed one, suggested farm walks provided on a map, etc.
I have never written a TripAdvisor review before, but feel so positive about Barbialla Nuova that I wanted to share our experience. I hope we are able to return. We visited during the Spring but I would also love to see it in Autumn.
I wish them every success at Barbialla Nuova - it deserves to prosper and to continue to receive glowing reviews.

We were a group of 7 and stayed in Doderi Alto, which is the top floor apartment of a beautiful converted farmhouse, high up on a hill so the views were amazing. Our three year old son loved it, he had so much space to wander round, loved picking the fruit, and loved looking at the animals in the reception area, where there is a farm produce shop and where the staff are really helpful.

The accommodation is reasonably basic but things have been kept as they should be in my opinion, with the original charm of the buildings kept intact. There is no air conditioning, which is maybe worth bearing in mind if you have older people in your party, as the temperature was well on its way to 40 degrees while we were there. The swimming pool is a good size, and gets the sun during the day so the temperature was just right, and the views from the pool are stunning.

There are plenty of nice touches to make your stay comfortable, it's self catering but sugar, salt pepper etc is provided. We found separating the rubbish and taking it to the rubbish hut a bit gross in the heat, but it's an organic farm and it's not too much of a hardship when you know they're trying to be environmentally friendly. If you want an authentically Italian holiday, which is peaceful but in an area with lots to see, then I would highly recommend this place.

My wife and I stayed in June with our 7 year old son. We last came when he was 1 as we had enjoyed it before, but it has improved since then and now has a farm produce shop and an office full of books. We stayed at Doderi Est, which is rustic and relatively basic, but suited us fine and fitted well into the location. There is a shared washing machine. It has a lovely rural view. We shared an outdoor pool with two other families. Our son wondered around outside safely and it was very relaxing. A car is needed to get around, which we hired from Pisa Airport, about 45 minutes away. The owners were very welcoming and we were lucky that two young Americans were working there for the 2012 summer and we could book them to child mind; our son loved them. Plenty of wildlife if you are prepared to look and safe walks. We would come back again.

Based on reviews and photos of this property, we had very high expectations. We picked up our rental car in Florence earlier than planned so that we could escape the overwhelming heat. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the drive to the Fattoria was about 45 minutes only. It was such a relief to be welcomed by Kyre in her laid back Californian style. All our stress from the sightseeing and heat in Florence melted away. The kids occupied themselves with checking out the cows, guinea fowl and hens as the parents checked in. Our accomodation in Doderi Est was as we expected from the photos, very simple in an understated, elegant way. We had booked a meal to be cooked for us on our first night by la bella Serenella. The cooking was simple, but superb, all the ingredients so fresh. We had enough leftovers to last us for 2 more meals.
There are great day trips within driving distance, we made it to Pisa, Volterra and San Gimignano in our 3 days there; all with enough time to also relax by the small pool with superb view.

If you are looking for an agriturismo stay and are concerned about it being organic and environmentally friendly, this is the perfect place. It's not fancy, but it hit all the right notes for us. Make sure to book a dinner with Serenella also.
