What an absolutely wonderful day!! It is as it says "you immerse yourself in traditional Italian culture and cuisine" - Mac and his wife Francesca are great hosts in a very relaxed and friendly environment, along with a lot of fun. Mac picked us up from the square in Spello about 10.00 am and took us high into the hills where his farm is - the drive was spectacular with amazing scenery. After our truffle hunting (success) we watched Nonna make the homemade pasta and then with all the extended family including the delightful "Dante and Polly" we all sat around outside and had the most wonderful lunch along with lots of beautiful wine - it doesn't get more authentic than this - a day to remember.

My husband and I travel a LOT, on different continents, and this gastronomical adventure is on our top three adventures of all time. Not only is this unbelievably fun, these are the nicest people and the warmest family ever! Mac picked us up from our hotel in Montefalco with 3 other passengers already in tow (shout out to the awesome Kiwis!) and drove us to their farmhouse. This is not some tourist set up--this is where the family actually lives during the summer. There we met Mac's lovely wife Francesca and the rest of the family: Nona and Nona (Francesca's mother and father), their little ones, Polly and Dante, and various uncles, friends and neighbors. Mac and Francesca speak English while the rest of the clan go about their day speaking only Umbrian dialect Italian. My husband and I marveled at how Polly and Dante, who can't be more than 3 and 5 years old, respectively, effortlessly flip back from English to Italian. It wasn't hard to fall totally in love with them!

It had just rained pretty heavily a few days earlier so it was pretty chilly. Mac & Francesca provided us with extra, rainproof outerwear which was such a great help. After meeting everyone including the family dogs, Mac drove the 5 of us up into the mountains of Pettino with Luca, the expert truffle hunter, driving another vehicle with his dogs. We didn't really expect to find any truffles because the ground had been wet from the previous rain, but the dogs found three! We then drove up further to the mountains where it was like a scene from a movie--white clouds floating in the background and white Chianina cattle grazing--unbelievable! Luca then cooked up scrambled eggs and shaved our beautiful bounty (summer black truffles) on top of the eggs. Mac busted out with cold, delicious prosecco, pecorino cheese they produce themselves--all DIVINE! It was filling and delicious, not to mention loads of fun because Mac had to shoo a few cattle away who wanted to join us!

That was just the beginning. After our mountain adventure, we were driven back to the farmhouse where we were given a quick tour of their centuries old cheese room and the breathtaking cheese--all hand made by the family. The quality of their cheese is like nothing I've ever tasted! And unfortunately, you can't buy any because the production is so limited and so delicious that one restaurateur from London buys up their entire production. So savor it while you're there! For the next 3 hours, an incredible lunch feast was served to us with more wine and prosecco. It started with a variety of delicious salami they make themselves, along with bread and their own olive oil. We had the honor of helping Francesca's mother make homemade pasta from scratch; Polly had her own batch going :) Everything is homemade and cooked right in their small kitchen. The pasta was cooked and served and it was of course, delicious. We were stuffed. But that was only the beginning. Two more meat courses followed (that included homemade sausage topped with truffles cooked right in an open hearth) and culminated with the most heavenly home made sheep's milk ricotta dessert I've ever had! The best part was that you dine with the family which included a few invited relatives and neighbors who live next door. This is as authentic Umbrian as you can get!

This was a day I only thought happened in the movies! It didn't feel like a tour. We felt like invited friends hanging out with the family. (From pick up to drop off, the day was probably a total of 7 1/2 hours.) What a beautiful and day and a beautiful family--an incredible and perfect experience! If you don't do anything else while you're in Umbria, you must do this!

ADVICE: Bring your appetite! This is NOT the day to make grand dinner reservations for that restaurant you've been wanting to try! You will be beautifully and completely stuffed leaving this wonderful home!

We were so very lucky to have found Wild Foods Gastronomical Adventure, and have the opportunity to spend the day with Francesca, Mac and their wonderful family. We knew from the moment we arrived that we were in for a special treat, and the day was even more spectacular than we could have imagined.

Searching for truffles in the beautiful Pettino countryside was an incredible experience, and Mac gave us a wonderful history of the area. Just when we thought it couldn't get better we stopped at the top of the mountain to enjoy fresh eggs topped with the truffles we had just found and the family's own olive oil, delicious homemade Pecorino cheese and plenty of Prosecco!

We made our way back to Mac & Francesca's home where we were treated to a hands on pasta making demonstration from Nonna, and more delicious food and wine! Once we finished it was time to sit with the family and enjoy the delicious multi-course meal that Francesca had prepared. This was definetly the most delicious meal of our trip, and we were in such wonderful company. The hospitality shown by Francesca & Mac really made us feel as though we were part of their family.

This experience was by far the highlight of our trip, and one we will treasure forever. We can't thank Francesca & Mac enough, and can't wait to come back!

Wow. This was such an amazing day. Beautiful scenery, truffle hunting, making pasta, fabulous food - all of that alone made it worth it. But what made it just so special were Mac, Francesca and the family themselves. So genuine, down to earth and welcoming. It felt like being invited into a family day, not a tour. One of those special life moments.

We felt very privileged to have had this wonderful day with Franesca and Mac and their family. We had been recommended Wild Foods by friends at home and it truly was one of those very special days. From the minute Mac collected us and our friend from our apartment in Montefalco we knew we were in for a wonderful day. The drive over the valley and up the hill to their farm was breath taking. Here we were warmly welcomed by the family . After cafe and much chatting and being kindly lent a few extra warm layers we ventured up the hill in search of truffles. Walking along with Mac, the local truffle hunter, Luka and his dogs, Mac explained to us the ins and outs of the hunt and the truffles amongst all the other questions we had on living and working on an Umbrian farm. We sampled the truffles on scrambled eggs made on the mountain top washed down with Prosecco and Francesca's handmade Pecorino cheese. Returning to the farm house Nonna made the pasta for our lunch and we all had a hand at helping. The highly skilled process of making the pecorino cheese, past down from Francesca's mother, was explained to us in the room where it was stored. The ultimate was being treated to a lunch of endless delicious food and wine shared with all the family. We can't thank Francesca, Mac and their family enough for sharing their knowledge, family and home. Unforgettable. We will be back. Ciao.
