Owner description: The Cantina Raina is a boutique winery nestled into the rolling slopes of the beautiful Montefalco countryside. The owner Francesco is a renowned winemaker and chef, making some excellent wine with the local prized grape sagrantino. You can visit the winery - an incredible and indulgent day - where he unveils the beauty and pleasures of his winery, vineyard and wine. He guides you as you stroll the property - from the ancient restored farmhouse to the magnificent sagrantino vines, from the tasting room to the cellar - trying different wines as you go and pairing each wine with a local delicacy prepared by his expert hands. It's a fantastic and exclusive experience for wine buffs and food lovers, as well as a great way to immerse yourself in the stunning local landscape. The Cantina Raina is also open for casual tastings and wine sales.

“A Commitment to Wine Excellence in Umbria”
Reviewed 4 June 2013

Francesco Mariani's Raina Winery in the Montefalco area of Umbria showcases his rich knowledge of food and wine by offering delicious wine tastings with a small plate food pairing. This is an up and coming wine maker (currently producing 40,000 bottles per year, 4 varietals tasted) with a genuine respect for the land and the grapes. The winery operates using all natural, eco-friendly methods and the wines show this commitment to mother earth with clean, robust flavors. We especially enjoyed the unique, sweet red dessert wine (sold in 375 ml bottles which made for easy packing!!). Wine tours by appointment only (the property includes the wine maker's family residence). On-site restaurant space also available by appointment for groups as the wine maker is an exceptionally talented chef. We were charged a very reasonable 5 euro per person. A highly memorable experience and terrific end to our winery tour day. www.vini-raina.it.

“Vine dining”
Reviewed 12 February 2013

It's winter and the days are shorter but the countryside is an incredible green and the vines are coming back to life with a hint of the wonderful times ahead, spring, summer, and autumn when the seasonal foods are so important to Italian food culture.
This visit is a surprise because it does a clever and delicate nuancing between landscape, the best wines, and the natural flavours of real Umbrian food, in a way which is understated but defines a clear connection. It isn't often that all these elements come together with such a strong result.
We wander in the vineyards and see the characteristics of the varieties of grapes and at each different stop we have a delightful tasting of food which relates best to each wine.
Francesco is a young man with training in gourmet cooking and is active in making wines in this wonderful corner of Umbria which is so famous for Sagrantino wine. He works in the professional kitchen on the property where it is warm and has a long view over the green fields.
He manages to combine subtle flavours which bring out the best in the wines he undersatnds os well because he makes them! He is charming fellow too.
The whole experience turns out to be a real pleasure as we are able to see the wine-making facilities, the vineyards and also have an amazing epicurian experience in the old fashioned sense with a modern twist - meaning the products are fresh and handmade in the traditional Umbrian way - but are not heavy but abundant. You certainly don't need to eat later in the day after this array of exceptional foods.
A taste of the outdoors, a view into wine-making, and a feast fit for a wedding all adds up to great value and a most interesting experience! We recommend it and will return in another season for sure.
