“Needs a Revamp”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

The positives were the breakfast, the spa and the choice of four pools. The hotel is close to the bus station which is good, because Bugibba isn't the most attractive of places on Malta. The negatives - I had booked a room with two single beds, however when we arrived quite late at night to the hotel we found we had been given a room with a double bed. Eventually we were given the room we had booked. Why I say the hotel needs a revamp was because the toilet was running water all the time, the wardrobe literally fell apart and the balcony door got jammed (which we had to ask twice at reception for this to be fixed). Much patience was also required to use the lifts. The general service we felt was poor, both in the hotel and also at the various bars and restaurants within the hotel grounds. One day our keycards wouldn't work so we traipsed back to reception and it was more like we were an inconvenience as opposed to the cards not working. Oh, and the pillows were also shocking quality.

This hotel has a lovely location and is very clean and well looked after. There is a choice of 4 pools and the sea to swim in. Water sports and entertainment, both day and night are plentiful, plus there is an abundance of good eating and drinking establishments nearby at cheap prices. The only downside of the hotel is that the main swimming and terrace area is separated by a main road from the seafront area, bar and pool, which is reached via a tunnel. The other problem is the service at the bar and restaurants, which is poor to say the least. An example was the afternoon I went to the Batubalan restaurant overlooking the sea. I was shown to a table straightaway and then totally forgotten about. After ten minutes of waiting I went and asked for a food menu and went back to the table. Five minutes later a waiter approached and asked if I wanted a drink, but I had not been given the drinkd menu. After perusing the menu I plumped for a bottle of house white, which arrived within a couple of minutes with a young waiter, who was unable to remove the cork from the bottle. He walked away with the bottle and passed it to another member of staff who promptly managed to open the wine but corked it.Twenty minutes into the visit and I finally was drinking from a glass of wine, although the bootle was left in the sun with no ice in the ice buckey! Dare I ask for a meal? By walking over and voicing my dissatisfaction to the manager I was then treated like royalty. The meal was overpriced and bland. The service in the pool bars was also poor, with the young staff mainly talking amonst themselves and served you in their own time. Also, I have never visited a hotel were the pools and surrounding areas shut at 7pm! The pool boys start clearing and cleaning up at 5-30pm, probably in an attempt to leave early.Just when you are starting to relax and chill there they are sweeping up around you, banging and crashing around, disturbing people and even asking people to leave early. Customer service at this hotel is poor, which is such a shame as the location and cleanliness were excellent.

To start by thanking Norbert and his fantastic team for a truly amazing day.....

Could not fault anything. We got married at the Amazonia Terrace on the 19th June. All our expectations and dreams planned over the last 11 months were made a reality by the staff and venue.

Within our wedding party we had to cater for a variety of needs. To which the hotel took in their stride. The food and service was outstanding!

Throughout our 2 week stay we found all members of staff, from the lady who tendered to our room to Management to be 100% at our beck and call. We could not have wished for anything more.

Thank you to everyone at the Dolmen. We will return.

Room Tip: The view from the Suites are amazing!!!

I stayed that the Dolmen as part of a conference package, sharing a double, non-ocean view room with a friend. First, a warning to US travelers - a double in Europe does not usually mean 2 full or queen sized beds as it does in the States. That was the case here. we had a smallish room with 2 twin beds that were comfortable, We also had a small balcony with a couple of chairs and a small table overlooking the tennis courts and the hotel next door which was under construction (which meant that construction went on until full dark and started at dawn, with accompanying noise and dust). Our room attendant kept our room very clean, and while I did find a beetle one evening by my bed, the balcony door had been open for several hours and it is probable that is how he wandered in...and how he exited as soon as he was discovered.

The closet was small and the "safe" inside was bolted to a shelf which lifted easily out of the closet , which proved a problem for me, as I was the treasurer of the event and responsible for any cash collected. The front desk would not take cash after the main office closed, so I had to carry the cash around with me during the evening hours if I left our room, and then deposit it with the business office in the morning.

The bathroom was very small, and we were given only one towel each, with no wash cloth and only one smallish bar of soap gratis. again, it may be a US vs Europe thing but at the prices we were paying, I would have expected more. at at least 2 towels per person. But it was very clean.

The pool area was lovely and there are two small Minoan ruins on the grounds, along with some very pretty plantings. The pools are are on several different levels, which I thought was nice. From the pool area there was a beautiful view of the ocean.

The first few days that we were in Malta, only the main dining room was available, but midway through our stay, the a la carte restaurant opened, giving us more dining choices for lunch and dinner. That being said, the main buffet dining room meals were quite good, with wide selections. and most of the conference participants mentioned that they were really going to miss the hotel's desserts, which really were delightful. While dining in the buffet dining room, it was interesting "people watching" and trying to guess other diners' nationalities. I particularly enjoyed the Matla Evening meal, when Maltese specialties were were served. I spent time chatting with one of the sous chefs/ servers about how several of the dishes were prepared and have tried to replicate a couple of them since returning home.

by and large, all the hotel staff that I met were friendly and helpful. Were I to return to Malta, I would probably stay at the Dolmen again, as I found the ruins in the pool area charming and restaurant food quite good, but next time, I'd opt for an ocean view room on a higher floor- the doubles seemed to be much larger on that side- and oh, that view was wonderful!

Room Tip: opt for an ocean view room on a higher floor

Not much to say really but it was very disappointing.

Rooms are poor and below standard. In need of improvement. Single beds pushed together isn't what we expect as a norm. Air con poor. Noisey and uninspiring.

Bathroom wasn't clean at all. Evidence of the previous occupants was clear.. Hairs everywhere....need I say more..

Breakfast was horrible. Large selection but all of which were very poor quality. Book room only if possible. Stayed 3 nights but only went for breakfast that one time-waste of money!

Location was the best thing about the hotel. Easy access to town.

Parking was good enough. Go next door to the newly renovated hotel!

After viewing many of the hotels on the island for our Wedding we decided to go with the Dolmen and we cannot emphasise enough how happy we are with our decision. The Wedding itself could not have been more perfect. We had exclusive use of the pool area, the hotel did an amazing job of dressing the area. The food was delicious and the staff extremely attentive. The backdrop of the sea was breath taking too. All our guests were extremely impressed with the wedding!
All the staff made us feel special, from reception to the room maids. A special mention goes to Norbert from the Food & Beverage team who put up with my 100's of emails and did everything we asked for and more to make our day special. Keith who was in charge on the night of the wedding was also brilliant and made sure everyone was happy.
We were allocated a Suite on the 6th floor for the duration of the holiday and were so pleased with the size of the room and the view.
We cannot emphasise enough how perfect everything was and will definitely be staying at the Dolmen again when we next visit Malta!
Thank you so much for making everything so perfect.

Room Tip: The Suites are definitely worth the little bit extra that they cost!
