We have stayed at the Gillieru for a several years now and would always be our first choice , the location in St Pauls Bay is first class and was the main reason we picked the hotel having passed by several times on our previous visits to Malta . The staff have always been excellent nothing is too much trouble for them especially Mary Rose on reception , we always eat at the hotel ,
[ suits my wife and I ] , but there are plenty of places to eat in and around the area .
On the negative side the air conditioning is not always at its best and some minor repairs could be undertaken . Overall the Staff and the location tend to make up for the minor problems .
The dining room staff are first class espsecially Raymond and Charles who keep everyone in
check [ in a nice way ]
The hotel always has repeat visitors like ourselves due to all of the above .

Room Tip: Good sea view rooms available 4/5 floor better

First time back to Malta after 15 years, but very disappointed with our choice of hotel, which is definitely not a 4 star. On arrival, we were put into a very dark room, which was supposed to be a sea view, and we paid the supplement for, and our travel agent even rang the hotel to confirm there was 1 available as we only booked 1 week prior to departure. The balcony was long and had a wall on either side of it and until you reached the end, only then could you see the sea. We complained and was moved the next day from the 3rd floor to the 5th in a side sea view room, as they hadnt a sea view one available. We thought this room wasnt too bad, then the shower would not work, but to be fair, after complaining, it was repaired the next day. It was also noisy due to the lift, therefore try to avoid floor 5. We were not next to the lift. We were after complaining to our rep on the Sunday, 1 week after arrival, told by a message from Reception on the monday evening, that we could have had a sea view room that morning, ,but because we didnt go to see her before 9.30a.m. she had let it go, but my partner was so angry by this time, he said we were not moving rooms again, you do not go on holiday to be wasting time moving rooms, it is supposed to be for relaxation and to unwind.
As the weather got hotter, we had the sun from early afternoon until sundown and our bedroom was like being in an oven, we kept trying the air conditioning but no joy, so thought that it hadn't been turned on, until we spoke to other guests who said theirs was working. So we tried it, with no success, then complained to have it repaired. We even saw the Manager to air our complaints, when we could take no more, but unfortunately left it until the Thursday as we left to return home on the Friday, but it was still not working when we left.
I would also advise only to book bed and breakfast. Needless to say we will not be returning, but if you have complaints air them to the Manager, sooner than later. It is rather hilly around this hotel, and up to the Sunday when the bus summer timetable started, there were no buses nearby, so avoid if you have problems with walking. We do not usually complain and make the best of a holiday, but too many problems with this one.

Room Tip: Avoid 5th floor if possible anywhere near to the lifts. Make sure if you pay supplement that you get...

My partner and I spent a week in Malta for our anniversary and my birthday at the beginning of June and we chose Gillieru Hotel as our base and it was a fantastic choice. The hotel is in a perfect location overlooking St Paul's Bay and although not centrally situated it is easy to travel everywhere by public transport.
Before our arrival I exchanged some emails with lovely Joanne and I would like to thank her again for beautiful room overlooking the church that was allocated to us (502) and the wine waiting for us in our room. The staff in the hotel is outstanding, very helpful and professional.
The room had all the basic toiletries and the towels are changed daily.Pool towels are also provided on request.
We had breakfast and evening meals in the hotel and both were very very good lots of choices and they have the best bread and tomatoes!Thank you Raymond ( one of the restaurant managers) for the bread I took back with me, a lovely surprise on our last morning.
Malta is a beautiful country and would love to go back and when we do we will definitely return to Gillieru Harbour Hotel.

basis plenty of options evening meal if required (extra). staff excellent from reception to cleaners nothing a problem. Beautiful bay views & its quiet swimming pool well maintained.
bed linen changed every other day, towels daily. It was a pleasure to stay here & we will return again in the near future. This hotel is a must

Will make this brief. Only real complaint is that the beds were solid!
Great location just a wee stroll from the busier area of Bugibba and Qawra for a choice of restaurants and bars. View from the poolside and roof terraces are amazing and although we stayed on the otherside of the hotel the view of St Paul's church was lovely.
Food at breakfast was good and all the bars were very reasonably priced.
Staff were lovely, especially if you make the effort to be nice to them.
Will definitely return.

This was our second stay at the Gillieru. It is a little bit of paradise. We had a room overlooking
the sea with lovely views around the bay. Quiet and unspoilt in this area of St Paul's, very peaceful and picturesque. Only had bed and breakfast, Da Rosi across the road is a wonderful
place to have dinner. The staff were very friendly and helpful, rooms were cleaned to a high standard every day, could not fault the service.
We will be back!!!!

Room Tip: It is worht paying the extra to have a room overlooking the sea -- just wonderful!!

This was my first holiday to Malta and upon arrival found that it was rather built up. This may be common knowledge however I was rather shocked at the endless amount of high rise buildings. Like a mini London.
The Hotel Gillieru Harbour is situated in a perfect area, right on the waters edge so the views are stunning. We didn't pay the extra for a sea view and regretted it. Placed on the 4th floor at the front, the views were rather bland. We moved to a lower floor as my Mum is scared of heights and with the balcony being 3 squares wide, it made her extra anxious.
The rooms as a whole are basic and adequate. The beds were slightly uncomfortable however as the week progressed, this discomfort became unnoticeable. The rooms were cleaned daily and therefore generally good overall. We stayed on a Bed and Breakfast basis and the breakfast was plentiful enough for small eaters like my mum and I. A mix of hot and cold foods, bread, cheeses, egg etc and the waiters who served the tea or coffee were nice.
As I had already said, the views from the sunbathing area were stunning. Many guests who have returned year after year said it was down to the view alone which made them return. The pool area was clean and tidy with plenty of sunbeds every day. The pool bar was not open and we were given the impression that it was due to open at the start of June, yet by the time we had left on the 5th, it was still not open. This was not a problem as such however if you needed a refreshment, the closest place was the adjoining but separate Gillieru restaurant. We never dined here however the bartenders were very nice and accommodating during the day, on more than one occasion.
In the basement, we found the Pizzeria which was closed at the time and the Games Room. Always a keen pool player when on holiday, we never once used this room as going down into the basement was like something out a horror film, dark and the Games Room itself felt like it hadn't seen human existence for about 100 years. Posters for old films/plays coupled with the eeriness of it all, therefore prevented me from using the facilities .
A nice 5 minute walk along the sea front takes you to Bugibba where there are many restaurants and bars. Many of these are reasonably priced and not too different from the hotel's prices. We dined most nights are Georges, which was quite cheap yet due to this was busy too. Especially at the weekend.
As you walk along to the restaurants you will see a few companies advertising trips to the Blue Lagoon, Comino Gozo etc. I was a bit wary of doing a boat trip as the last time I did, i was sea sick and therefore did not want a repeat performance. However the trip was amazing. I highly recommend Hornblower Cruises. Kevin and crew really do look after you and everything was brilliant. We also did a trip with the Reps "Malta by Night" which is a great photo opportunity and going to Mdina was definitely worth it. Felt like I was walking through the streets of Victorian London.
Anyway Malta was a bit of a disappointment compared to other places I've been which are considered more backward however for a cheap break, was lovely. The perfect base. Just depends on your own ideals really.
