“Excellent value for money, ideal base for exploring the island”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

Just back from 10 days in San Pawl. Anyone hesitating to go- don't pay attention to bad reviews! Unless you want a 5 star quality! It's a 3 star hotel, quite basic, don't expect plasma TV and stuff.. But it's absolutely ideal base, if you don't plan to spend a lot of time in the room. We were 2 adults and a 4 year old. Room was spacious enough for us with 3 single beds which we pushed together.
Rooms and towels were cleaned daily, we had a large terrace overlooking the pool, loads of space to dry towels, table and chairs to have some wine in the evening.
Pluses: clean and spacious accommodation; close to the promenade, where loads of cafes and restaurants are (3mins walk), buggiba artificial beach about 10mins walk, very small but quite nice; pool is large enough although shades around 5pm.
Transport is very cheap- €12 for a weeks bus ticket, travel as much as you like, we went numerous times to Melieha bay beach (20mins bus journey), buses are A/C so don't be put of by the journey time, beach is lovely and sea is very warm. trips to Valetta and Mdina are the must! About 40 and 20mins bus rides respectively.
Reception staff at the hotel are lovely and helpful, always eager to answer all queries.

Minus: very loud karaoke entertainment every evening. But I think rooms not overlooking the pool will be quite enough.

All in all, I recommend this hotel, excellent value for money, close to the sea, restaurants, busses and shops, friendly and efficient stuff, perfect base for exploring the island

Have to mention, not hotels problem, but Malta's itself - mosquitos! We were eaten alive!!! Also don't take the boat trip to Blue lagoon!! It looks nice on the brochures but its extremely overcrowded, you will feel like in the middle of middle eastern market! People sitting on top of each other, pushing each other with elbows trying to get in the sea, beach is extremely small the rest is just rocks! Impossible to sunbathe or swim, boats bring u there and leave for 4hr, as there is no space to sit down, never mind to lie down, you are pushed into paying for sun lodges and umbrella (€12). And still people are laying so close you are touching elbows. Crazy!

We arrived at this hotel at 11pm and on arrival an older couple was standing at reception as we were checking in. The first words they said to us was 'welcome to hell' - I figured they weren't happy!! The lifts were out of order so we had the climb the stairs with our cases. The room was ok not great but ok. A/C wasn't great. We booked half board but ate in the restaurant once - very poor quality food but hey it was cheap! I remember looking around the restaurant and thinking that the place was just full of misfits!! The night time entertainment was something else....really bad it catered for the handfull of local people that must live nearby....not a single tourist in sight!! you really do get what you pay for! I am by no means a snob I actually read the bad reviews before going and thought it would be grand because I'm really not fussy (I've stayed in low budget Amsterdam hotels) but oh my-save an extra couple of quid and stay else where...also give the Irish bar up the road a miss.....

like most holiday makers i consider my hotel room as a place to shower and sleep, because i don't intend to spend much time in it. However i found in the San Pawl Hotel it impossible to do either, our shower lay dead in the bath and when mounted back on the wall meerly dribbled water when on full, and only hot water at that. To clean your teeth you had to use bottled water as there was no cold water from the sink taps only hot.The only place to get a shower was at the poolside.
As for sleep, it was impossible, the beds were wooden based with a covering that under no stretch of the imagination could be called a mattress, the only way to make it remotely bearable was to sleep on top of all the bed clothes including using the extra winter covers provided in the room. All in All first impressions when entering the lobby give no hint of the hell to come.i have never stayed in a worse room ever.

Room Tip: Book your room in a different hotel, we were on second floor and had no air conditioning, As for th...

Hotel itself perfectly fine for fee and facilities only booked basic room got large room 3 single beds fridge air con etc everywhere tiled and clean , towels & sheets changed daily , cooked breakfast of fried eggs sausage or scrambled & bacon to eat not wonderfull but adequate , staff helpfull , pool shaded after 5:30 we had third floor room over pool and had sun on balcony till 8 nos3041 to 3050 , loads of sun beds , temp while we were there late 20s every day , drinks in hotel pricey but loads of bars outside ie jesters over road 1:50euros for local doubles , front room bar on way to sq 3euros for pint of lager and can of stowford press,

Like most people I look at reviews for hotels, however I will always check in to a hotel with an open mind on this occasion I wish I had listened to the reviews.

This is a terrible hotel with terrible beds I can only describe as like sleeping on a floor the base of the beds are solid and the mattresses are not much better.

I had paid for a room that slept upto 4 people however was given a room that slept 2 after complaining to the reception staff i was told that all the rooms are the same and that if there had been 4 of us traveling they would put 2 pop up beds where they would place them i could not tell you.

As we only stayed here for one night I can only comment on the quality of the breakfast which was diabolical to say the least.

Room Tip: do not book this hotel

The hotel was well situated as it was only a short walk to the shops, bars and sea front. Food was a lttle repetitive but there was always a choice and although a fussy eater, I certainly didn't go hungry!

The rooms and public areas were kept very clean and the use of the well equipped gym plus a vibro plate was great.

The staff were always friendly and helpful.

Over all, it was a very pleasant holiday and I would come back to the San Pawl again.

First stayed at this hotel in May last year. No complaints. Went back this year in June and found that the reception had been upgraded which looks very good. Luckily Mario, Sandra and Christobel were still there so we were assured of a good welcome. All the staff were great with a mention of Marisa who was so helpful. We will definitely be returning again.
