(This review is very late becasue it got lost in the uloo for 6 months, but here it is anyway. We went out in May)
This must be our 4th or 5th trip out for a cheap self catering holiday over the last 10 years, and this time it was the turn of Malta to entertain us. As is usual I never even let the Memsahib anywhere near the brochures until I made the selection and paid for it, this time finding www.lowcostholidays.com. If it was up to her, we'd spend around a grand, and miss out on some gems.
Anyway, this time it was £350 the lot, including the airport carparking for the both of us, flying Ryanair, (never again, but that's another story!), from Luton, to the 4 star hotel that is the Canifor Hotel in Qawra, (pronounced Owra), the posh end of Buggiba, (the chav end of St Pauls bay!).
Was it 4 star? Not on your nellie! 3 at best, but 2 for honesty's sake.
The apartment was a 3 room affair with a window in each room, none of which actually pointed to the outside world. There was no carpet in the "lounge", although the word "lounge" really shouldn't be used when it is really only an extension of the kitched with a tatty old sofa in it.
The beds were comfortable enough I suppose, and the shower, although all mangled was actually very powerful, with lashings of hot water.
I have to say, no stars for general cleanliness - the Baby Belling cooker was more grease than cooker, and the bathroom was filthy for the first couple of days. Although regular visits from the staff did see a marked improvement eventually. Maid service was excellent with towels and sheets being changed every day, beds made crisply, and regular top ups of bog rolls.
We did eat in the restaurant once, for a breakfast on the last day, and it was OK, but the all inclusive guests, (£230 a pop including flights), never seemed to stop complaining about the quality of food and service for dinner.
There are 2 bars, one of which is really a pool room, (in more ways than one), and the other more of a caberet dance hall. The evenings entertainment ranged from Karaoke to the odd duet, and was really quite pleasant. the beer a little expensive if you have to pay for it, but the wine was quite reasonable, and cheap.
The south facing Pool area consists of 2 pools, both a bit small for swimming in, with a small indoor pool directly underneath in the basement. Loads of sunbeds and chairs, although, again on the first day, obviously last years equipment, which quite quickly got replaced to brand new ones by the end of the week.
We did have our own personal cockroach which was nice! He scurried under the fridge on the last day as we were leaving and we never saw him again. I was quite upset - he never did say goodbye!
Anyway, once more, did any of this spoil our holiday - not a chance. For what it cost, and the amount of time we spent in the apartment it was good value at £37 for the week, and you really can't expect much for this can you? Would we go there again? Well we have a rule never to go to the same place twice - the worlds too small - but no, sorry, if we went to Malta again, we'd probably spend a bit more and go somewhere else.
One other thing. Eating out is actually quite cheap, but there is only one gem restaurant in the area. Head for the "Incognito" bar, opposite Trollies supermarket. Take no notice of the rather chavvie front, walk through the dark sticky bar, past the ugly disco area, up some steps to find an Aladins cave of a restaurant, which a truely marvelous menu, excellent service, and attentive and fun manager and waitresses. It's the sort of place your can walk into with a tie on, or shorts and not feel out of place!
