Got back today from a 9 day All Inclusive holiday to the Canifor Hotel in Qawra, Malta. Let's start with a little honesty, it says 4 star but typically for Malta, it's given an extra star, it's a solid 3 star for me. I have to say, the reviews are very mixed, it's a marmite hotel, you'll either like it or hate it. It's worth a try if you want a cheapish stay in Malta. It's good for the local bus terminus where you can get to anywhere on the island for a few pence. The staff were friendly enough, the food was decent enough, the rooms were cleaned daily but the place is tired looking and needs modernising badly. Overall I'd give it about 6/10

Turned up at hotel 2.30pm on Sunday 6th March '11 (after case crushed on flight by Easyjet; car not the model booked; charged more than car cost us originally to hire from Economy Cars for fuel and insurance cover) to be told we had no room at the Inn due to computer error... Bollocks!!! They would not flinch... sent to the TOPAZ Hotel until next day when they had a room free? Came back to Canifor on the Monday 9am after a extremely unpleasent night at the Topaz. DON'T EVER VISIT THE TOPAZ!!!!!!!! but thats another story!

The Canifor is a palace by comparison to the TOPAZ, its clean, bright, serves basic food and has entertainment in the evening (if you like a man playing with his organ) but the oldies from the northern countries loved it! Not for the under 60's or young at heart. Rooms are clean and bright, but a little 80's retro look with heating & cooling (free), a fridge placed outside the dressing table housing as it was too big (11 euros extra) a small 12 inch telly which has Sky News and CNN sometimes (remotes are 5 euros deposit or you can't use the telly), a safe (another 11 euros extra). Shower had no water pressure but in the bathroom there was a plastic stool provided to get you seated closer to the vertical stream of the shower head? No tea or coffee facilities thought so take your own kettle etc...We had only one chair on the slim balcony with a small plastic table.

The food was basic, a choice was provided at all meals, but don't expect any fresh fruit unless you pay extra. My wife is diabetic and they certainly do not cater for this with their range of meals or deserts. The sweets were like 'Mum's been to Iceland', defrosted and put on a platter with a serving spoon (no cream and ice cream by request only). For breakfast we had Sugar Puffs, Alpen like musili, foreign type corn flakes, sometimes yogurt, liver? kidneys? bacon every other day, 'always' full fat milk and various fried foods and cold selection of meats. Pick your time to eat as table numbers too few at peak times.

I think we expected too much for the reasonable amount we paid for our stay and based on its four star rating it does not compare to this rating in comparison to other Med Sea resorts we have stayed at in the last few years. Value for money it certainly IS, but you get what you pay for. Close to Bus station, Casino, seafront,1 Euro a pint bars and plenty of local entertainment on your doorstep! Free WiFi in lobby to boot!

Would I visit again? Probally not if i'm honest, but don't be totally put off as it is not a 'dive'. Good value and most staff can manage a smile occassionally!

Got a cheap all inclusive deal on this hotel. This hotel markets itself as 4* but it is only 3* at best. Or room was on the 4th floor so away from noise but some friends we met were on the ground floor near the maids room which was very noisy from 7am! However, the staff are friendly. The food is ok. Always hot. Not a massive choice but always 3 meats with potatoes & veg, and a salad selection and sweets. Ice cream had to be requested. Quite a small pool area outside and in summer it must be very overcrowded although there is an indoor pool and a sun terrace on the roof which was closed whilst we were there. Maid service every day with clean towels. Evening entertainment was aimed more at older people, 60+ which was average age of guest. This was more to do with time of year than hotel. All in all for what we paid it was ok.
All in all, we got a good deal on what we paid for.

the hotel was ok for what we paid for the holiday. it was clean and tidy. the room was supposedly a superior room (this meant you got tea and coffee facilities in your room) but unfortunately it was on the 1st floor, above a loading bay and across the corridor from the housekeepers room. as the noise started underneath the room around 5ish and the housekeepers started around 7ish (1 of which had the loudest voice i have ever heard...which echoed down the corridor!!!) you didnt get the best sleep. i suggested changing rooms but my partner didnt want to make a fuss!!!
the food was ok. at breakfast the was plenty of cereal, toast and cooked food (although they chefs did tend to throw this on your plate) and lots of tea and coffee.
lunch usually consisted of 3 choices of starters, mains and sweets, and evening meal was pretty similar. there was also salads and rice and pasta dishes to choose from.
as i stayed on an all inclusive package i had the option to have snacks in the bar area. these were better suited to me as you could have toasties, sandwhiches, burgers, omelettes chips etc.
after 3 days of using the restaurant, we did go out for evening meals for a couple of nights just for a change.
the bar staff were very friendly and helpful.
the pool area was quite small, and around midday the sun had disappeared behind the hotel (this may be better in the summer months). there is an indoor pool with jacuzzi and sauna.
there was evening entertainment each night, but was suited to the older genation as my idea of a night out is not listening to someone play an organ!
the clientele at the hotel were considerably older than myself ( i am 41) and sometimes they were not the friendliest!
overall, i probably wouldn't go back there, but for what we paid, we got our moneys worth on the all inclusive bar!!

We travelled Sunday to Sunday. the pickups were brilliantly organised and the hotel receptionists were very helpful, even at 3.30am when we left! The rooms were basic, but kept clean with towels changed every other day. The aircon unit blasted out cold air until the handyman showed us how to use it. He was very patient and helped us a couple of times to master how to program - not easy!! We stayed B&B, but were given the option to upgrade to HB for 3 nights for 24 euros each = a bargain. The food was buffet style - it could have done with more choice rather than the same choice for each breakfast, other than that it was tasty and there was plenty of choice for evening meals, even for an awkward veggie! The staff provided heaters for the foyer area to keep us all warm!! The entertainment in the evenings reminded me of a coach holiday, but it was fun to watch Strictly Come Dancing style dances and everyone enjoyed themselves. Overall we enjoyed our stay, but would say it was a 3 star, not 4 star - comparing it to the Fortina in Silema.
