I returned here in April ,having decided to give it another try after my last stay.. I am pleased to say it is now a much-improved place indeed! The Canifor is situated a short walk from the bus station in Qawra. When I arrived I found the reception was overall friendly and efficient. I first had a street level room but asked for a room change and was given a more suitable one after a few days. This was clean with a good bed but a with a worn mattress. Lighting was good and easy to read. A warm and light feel was given by the decor and yellow back wall. there was a cooler, hair dryer and french windows leading onto the balcony. The room television was useless for entertainment with no evening videos now.The bathroom disappointed being very small with never enough hot water. certainly none for a bath and not quite hot enough to enjoy a clean shave. The bath was new but a cheap, slippery plastic one.The maid service was average only. Breakfast consisted of continental and cooked English , sometimes with choice of eggs. Three cereals including muesli and a tea/ coffee machine, plus fruit juice. There was no wholemeal bread......Evening meals were much improved on my previous stay.Soups were generally good and home made.Three meats included some delightfully cooked fish. whereas before fish was a negative experience the new chef had made a difference! Vegetables were lightly cooked with fresh,(not tinned) carrots and cauliflower. potatoes too. plus fries.and I really enjoyed the courgettes and marrows baked in oil.Salad is good here with two choices of beans and some pickle usually. Good for vegetarians. there were three or four cakes and sometimes an apple crumble with custard.plus jelly and tinned fruit on request.waiter service was efficient but a little pushy as this dining room is far too small giving a cramped feel....The function room is popular for dancing and has two tv screens for football. The bar is a disappointment as there are no local Maltese beers. So overall a drop in maid standards but a huge leap in food quality at the evening. I would say this hotel is value for money now.

Room Tip: Choose a pool view for quietness and less wind and to hear the evening sparrows.

This may once have been 4 star but in my opinion not any longer. First week had to ask for sheets to be changed. Second week they were changed every other day. Wierd system when someone takes all the bedding and towels and it can be three or four hours before beds are remade. Food very basic. Staff mixed. Some friendly others not. Witnessed an argument with guest and reception staff which would have resulted in at least a severe reprimand for the staff member in this country. Great hotel if you love ballroom dancing. Dinner served early on Saturdays possibly to accommodate pizza restaurant. OK hotel but don't think I'll be back.

Room Tip: Standard rooms get sun from noon through rest of day. Superior rooms overlook pool and only get sun am.

My husband, sister and brother in law returned from this hotel this morning following a weeks' stay. We were quite apprehensive following previous reviews but need not have worried. Granted the hotel is in need of a facelift but was very clean and comfortable. The rooms were cleaned and towels changed daily. Once we informed the staff that we were vegetarians, they went our of their way to ensure we had suitable food to eat with the chef coming out personally to see that we were catered for! How's that for service? The hotel staff were lovely especially Jessica on the front desk, her mom Nathalie in the restaurant and her dad the Head chef. The hotel is situated around the corner from the bus station and for less than 2 euros, we were able to get a bus anywhere all day, hopping on and off buses to suit ourselves. An easy walk down the road leads to the sea and numerous shops, restaurants etc.
we hired a car from the hotel very cheaply for the last 3 days of our stay and travelled to the south of the island for the day- well worth the trip, markets, ruins, churches, Pop. Eye village- where the film was shot, boat trips made our stay in Malta great. At least they drive on the left as we do here.
A note of caution, beware of Time share touts who will try and convince you that they are NOT. We attended a presentation at The Radisson Hotel on Golden Bay- go if you have a couple of hours to look around a nice hotel. We received a free day cruise to places and beaches of interest from the British sales guy Bradley who's office is just around the corner from the hotel. This saved 25 euros each couple and I guess was just about worth it!
Make sure you visit the Capital Valetta, a great day out so good we went twice.
If you want posh, stay at another hotel, if you are happy with lovely staff, comfort, cleanliness, good food, stay at the. Canifor Hotel.
Ps, you can hire beach towels for 6 euros, 3 euros back when you return the towel. You can also borrow an iron of you need to. At least this will help to keep the luggage down!

having travelled to malta numerous times I found a cheap A/I deal at the canifor, having read some of the reports I went with an open mind & was surprised with what we got. the staff were friendly, hotel clean food above average ( breakfast was ok bit hit & miss ). only disapointment was that we had room 317 which was in a corner with 2 ajoining room balcony`s no privacy but it was lovley to sit out in the morning sun. the hotel is idealy located but having stayed at other hotels near by ( suncrest, qawra palace, dolman, santana ) the canifor is not a 4star hotel

Room Tip: rooms over looking pool get the sun till lunch time, pools at the front don't have the best view (wasteland)
