On the plus side - the rooms are basic but clean and the staff were exceptionally helpful. Tracey was forever on duty in the restaurant & never stopped! Housekeeping took a mattress up in the lift as soon as we mentioned that we didn't want our 10 year old sleeping on the fold-out settee.
Also the indoor pool is a bonus when the weather was cooler.
Negatives, however -
We paid to upgrade to a superior room when booking but were suprised to find that the only thing that makes a standard room superior is the addition of a kettle and 2 cups for making coffees! Hmm!
The food is not great, to put it mildly. The continental breakfast was boring with the same every day - bread rolls, cereal and tinned fruit. But the one evening meal we attended was dreadful ... Tough, overcooked lamb or liver in grey gravy, tinned veg & cold roast potatoes. Yuck!
It was May, but the roof-top pool was freezing cold and a lot smaller than it appears in the photos.

Room Tip: Do NOT go half board

After an extended break in malta after staying at another hotel and with family, i came across this hotel at a bargain price on the internet for my remaining two nights. It was 35 euro for 2 people bed and beakfast.

When i cheked in, to be honest i was expected to be put in the broom cupboard but had a really lovely, clean room with decent bathroom and shower. A cot was put in the room as requested when i booked (this doesnt always happen with some hotels) and it was nice and clean. However, my only complaint is that i was in room 111, just above the enterance and till around 12.30am in was quite noisy.

The breakfast is only continental and i wouldnt have been happy with it had i paid the going rate but it was ok (hot food at an extra cost). The roof top pool was nice and clean although very quiet and the pool bar was closed due to the time of year. Didnt have much to do with the staff due to such a short stay but seemed friendly enough.

The hotel is out of the way though and there is a bit of a walk to the square. I didnt mind this but some might.

The Sunflower Hotel was good value for a fairly basic, but comfortable hotel. It was in a quite scruffy residential area (no views!) about a 10 minute walk from the main resort. This suited us as the resort was not really our cup of tea! The shower was powerful and always hot. The food on the whole was good and varied.
The room was adequate, main problem was that the curtains and nets smelt strongly of cigarettes. The chambermaids did not do a great job of cleaning. Did not notice the floor being clean during out 1 week stay. Rest of the hotel was clean.
Staff on reception friendly and helpful.
Hotel seemed to cater for a variety of nationalities, which was nice, except French who out numbered all of us. Shame - rude and noisy.
Hotel was OK for a short break.

Overall, based on what we paid for 7 nights half board it is difficult to complain about the hotel. Yes, it isn't too luxurious, and there are very small, inexpensive things that they could improve on, like being kept 40 minutes at reception prior to room allocation or cleaning the swimming pool, but it is very cheap and cheerful.

Summary:

Food - Breakfast is very much continental style with limited choice. Basic cereal, cold croissants, ham, cheese, jam and bread are about as good as it gets. Filled me each morning, but that's about it. €3 supplement gets you an English breakfast, but better going out to other restaurants if you plan to take this option. Dinner was reasonable - always 3 mains to choose from (Chicken, Rabbit, Lamb etc), along with vegetables, potatoes, and salad and soup. This was better than the breakfast.

Room - Can have no complaints about the room. It was a good size, had a good TV, bed was okay, balcony was small but adequate, and toilet acceptable. Sheets weren't cleaned while I was there which was disappointing, but towels changed daily.

Pools - Indoor pool was cold and not too clean. Outdoor pool has a nice rooftop position, but again was unclean. Hotel charge for towels to use at the pool, so take your own. Beds are free.

Location - Bugibba does have quite a few restaurants and bars and can be lively at the main square; however, it is quite a quiet resort so don't expect it to be extremely lively. You can get to other parts of the island via the local buses. Valletta is 57 cents each way, or €1.16 to most other locations. Hotel is located about 10 mins from bus station and a similar distance to the main bugibba square. I thought the hotel had a good location and was ideal for all amenities.

We loved this hotel. It was clean, served good food and the staff were friendly and efficient. It is a bit remote (10-15 minutes normal walking) from the sea front and from the bus station, but that's OK if you're fit enough. It does have the advantage of being in a peaceful and quiet area so you get a good night's sleep.

We stayed here for 11 days HB and it was free by using our Tesco Clubcard Points. It would have cost £332 each from Cosmos if we had paid. For that price it was a bargain and many people were on long stay holidays which worked out even cheaper. Not our usual type of hotel as we like a bit more luxury but it was a good way to use our vouchers.
On arrival we were a bit shocked by the location of the Sunflower. We knew it was in a residential area but it was quite a run down area. The hotel is a big concrete, square building, which looks unattractive and is a good 15-20 mins walk to the bus station. There are a couple of supermarkets within a 5 min walk and the seafront is about 10 mins away. The pavements are very uneven and in poor repair around the area and quite a lot of litter can be around as well as dog mess!
However, on entering the hotel it was well kept and quite pleasant in most places for a 3* and the staff were all very polite, helpful and hard working. The Maltese people are so friendly, they really do make you feel at home.
Our room was comfortable and a good size but smelt of cigarette smoke. The toilet is squeezed into such a tight space that the toilet roll and holder are nearly on your lap! Our room overlooked a piece of waste land at the back and some shabby looking blocks of flats but was quiet. Beds were made and towels changed every day and the room was cleaned quite well, except for the mirrors, windows and balcony.
Food was mainly good. Breakfast was continental with a fair choice and full English for 3 euros if you wanted it, freshly cooked to order. Freshly squeezed orange juice for 2 euros if you don't like the orange squash type. The crusty white bread was lovely and we never went hungry. Dinner had 3 choices of main, 2 starters and 3 desserts plus always fruit cocktail and ice cream. Drinks were reasonably priced.
There is a small bar, games room, Internet, snack machine, small indoor pool and quite a nice roof-top pool and terrace with good views.
The staff were very helpful if you needed to know anything. My main complaint was that it was very cold on our first 4 days and the hotel was freezing!!!! I asked if the heating was meant to be on as our heater didn't seem to be working and they told me it was set to come on for a couple of hours in the early morning and at 21.00hrs for another couple. We had to get into our beds to keep warm and people were wearing their jackets at dinner as it was so cold. The weather improved and we noticed a big difference then but the heating really did need to be put on earlier on the colder days.
To sum up...If you want a cheap holiday to Malta and don't mind things not being perfect, then this could be the place for you. For the price it was great and it grew on us as time went on. We like the luxury hotels but will use our clubcard points like this again and except that price wise, you'd be usually paying more for a self catering apartment.
We had a good holiday overall and loved Malta. It's a shame their old buses are being replaced in July as they are such a laugh!
