“In need of a good clean & maintenance!”
Reviewed 21 June 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Not our first time in Malta but our first stay at Porto Paolo. We (2 adults and 4 children) stayed here for 2 weeks at the end of May / beginning of June 2016. After seeing the photos and reading the past reviews we were pretty confident all would be as expected - HOWEVER . . . . . . when we arrived at the 'luxury' apartment we had to spend the first day of our holiday shopping for cleaning products and sanitising the place. The kitchen sinks were stained brown, the dish drainer looked like it had never had a clean, there wasn't a clean dish, cutlery item or utensil in the cupboard. The en-suite shower was so dirty and full of lime scale we refused to use it. The main bath was also covered in lime scale and soap scum, the corner bath alone took me an hour to clean - not the first choice of holiday activity you have in mind when your landing in Malta! On a brighter note, the bedrooms and living space were very much acceptably clean. After a long day of travelling and cleaning, we put our children to bed and planned to make use of the (now clean) jacuzzi bath, HOWEVER . . . . . . . after having the water heaters on for approx' an hour and a half the water turned tepid when the bath had reached only around a third full and then we learned that the jacuzzi didn't even work! It ended up being a very quick bath in Luke warm water minus the bubbles & relaxation! For the rest of the fortnight we had to make do with a sit down shower in the corner bath as I've said the stand up en-suite jet shower was so dirty we couldn't use it. The radio in the bathroom was a good point. The hair dryers in the bathrooms are poor so take your own if you need one, the main bathroom dryer just lacks power, the en suite dryer is better but the handle gets so hot it burns your hand. The T.V is an old plasma with lots of screen burn and the cable / satellite only has the basic package so unless you want to just watch the news, Cartoon Network or you speak Maltese it's not really a facility you can use. To take out your rubbish you have to use the lift to level -1 and take it out of the rear doors, on re-entering it's almost impossible to get the lift to work so you have to take the stairs and find the main entrance so you can use the front lift. You can not fault the location of the apartment, the view from the balcony is amazing and we spent most of our time out there. The balcony is smaller than it looks on the pictures, we struggled to fit the patio table & six chairs on it for a bit of Al fresco dining but that's no major issue. Most of the apartments in the Porto paolo block are privately owned residential properties so you do have to be extra careful not to make too much noise - not easy when you have a 3, 4, 5 and 10 year old and the slightest noise seems to echo around the block but I think we managed to keep the disturbance to a minimum, the people in the apartment above us were quite noisy, at 7am every morning! There is plenty to do in the area, shops, restaurants and bus stops etc. are pretty much on the door step. The Portobello restaurant is very close and an excellent establishment if your looking for a bit of fine dining in the evening, they also have a side restaurant that serves take-away pizza. Boat excursions are easily accessible at the harbour of the bay, we'd recommend the sea adventure glass bottom cat with the Gozo tour - a great day out! We found Piscoppo's cash and carry to be about the best place to do your grocery shopping, it wasn't too far away (on Mosta Road). Bugibba square is around a 10 - 15 minute walk from the apartment, Fat Harry's pub & restaurant there do a great full English! A further 10-15 minute walk and you come to the aquarium at Qawra which we'd also recommend a visit. Valletta is a lengthy bus ride so we chose to go by taxi but this cost us a hefty €80 round trip taxi fare! We spent quite a few days at Mellieha bay, which is around 25 minute bus ride, it's a perfect beach, ideal for small children, it's a large beach with fine sand and shallow waters so clear you can see the fish. Overall we had a good holiday, we love Malta and its people but the apartment did let it down and gave us a feeling of disappointment, we wouldn't stay here again but did very much enjoy the view from the balcony. I'm sure it was a fantastic apartment when it was refurbished but it's seriously lacking in maintenance. We complained to the rep who checked us out and showed her the state of the still filthy en-suite along with photos we'd taken prior to cleaning other areas of the apartment and her response was 'oh, the cleaner is usually good at her job, she must have over looked it this time, I'll let her know' (I'm certain that the grime had been overlooked for quite some time before our stay), we didn't even get an apology. Overall the apartment just didn't live up to our expectations, we holiday at least once a year and have never encountered this level of lack of attention to a holiday let. Photos to follow.

“Best Apartment In Malta”

This is one of the best apartments in Malta with the most fabulous views of St Paul's Bay. Getting up every morning and walking through to the spacious living room the view just takes your breath away. The apartment is so large 3 bedrooms and a kitchen and dining area to die for. There are 2 balconies so you can catch the sun everyday it is also spotlessly clean when you arrive.
The staff who manage the apartment for the owner are excellent and gave a wonderful service to us when we stayed there. We felt like millionaires for one week were so sorry to depart.
I would have hesitation in recommending this apartment to anyone if you are not satisfied with the quality and views of this apartment there is something wrong with you. Only downside no pool but the sea is only a 5 minute walk. Loads of excellent restaurants are very close by and we used them can recommend them all.

“Worth every cent, Million Dollar Views and Perfect Location”
Reviewed 27 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

Worth every cent! My wife and I stayed here in August 2013, the view is perfect and is worth every cent that you pay. You could stay on the balcony all day to enjoy the view & breeze without wanting to go out to the beach. The facilities are all well maintained and the apartment was extremely clean.

The location is perfect. Its close enough to everything to walk but far enough away to be away from the noise. Parking is a bit of an issue but its the same everywhere you go in Malta so it was definitely worth the walk back to the apartment.

The apartment is also close to 2 really good restaurants Tarragon restaurant & Gillieru restaurant both being less than 5 minutes walk you can see them both from the balcony. There's also a strip of restaurants and Bugibba square only 10-15 minutes away by walk.

The location is quiet and the apartment had double glazed windows which helped keep all of the noise out.

Due to the height of the apartment and the apartment being on the corner you don't need the airconditioning during the day or during the night. We slept with the aircon on a few of the nights when their was no breeze.

We will definitely be returning in a few years.

“Outstanding Apartment in St Paul's Bay, Malta!”
Reviewed 22 July 2013 for a stay in July 2013

person found this review helpful

Vacationed/visited family in Malta for 8 days in July 2013 and stayed at this property for the first time. I stayed with my spouse and 2 daughters and found the apartment extremely spacious, clean, modern and it has an outstanding view of St Paul's Bay. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend this property to others. Here are some other details:
Pros:
- View, view and more view!
- lots of space - 3 large BRs and 2 bathrooms in addition to the kitchen/family room
- air conditioning in living room and all the bedrooms
- in suite modern washer and dryer
- open concept kitchen and living room
- close but not too close to tourist amenities
- very quiet in the evening
- two lifts to the apartment
- Wi-Fi
- very responsive property manager

Cons:
- no pool, although sea is close and nearby hotels allow pool use for a nominal fee
- lifts are very small and a little claustrophobic

Overall, a very nice property and one we would consider staying at again.

“Stunning apartment with fantastic views & great location!”
Reviewed 28 May 2013 for a stay in April 2013

We stayed at this fantastic apartment for one week at the end of April and we loved it!
We booked a transfer with Paul and our pick up from the airport and check in was all very efficient. We were all very impressed with the apartment and it is just as it is advertised on the website, absolutely beautiful :)
It is a very spacious, modern apartment well laid out. It has balconies to the front (overlooking bay) and to the rear, all with superb views. It is in private secure complex and it is nice and quiet. It is in a great location in St Pauls Bay, close to the shops and restaurants. There is a bus stop just across the road, and the buses go to the terminus @ Bugibba where you can get a bus to anywhere on the island. There are also boat trips that depart just accross the road from St Pauls Bay.
The Gillieru Harbour Hotel is opposite the apartment and they have a roof top pool. We told them we were staying in Porto Paolo and asked if it would be possible to pay to use their pool and they said yes and it is was €5 per day. So this is a very good option :)
The kitchen in the apartment is great with all mod cons and utensils if you want to cook & dine in apartment. There are also plenty of restaurants close by, ones we would recommend are: Tarragon (booking advised) / Venus / Portobello / and The Gillieru Restaurant.
We would highly recommend this apartment and would love to come back and stay here again!!

Porto Paolo is without doubt one of my favourites on our portfolio, being an agent I have seen many on the island, it's the size, finish, location and views that do it for me. I am very pleased to learn you enjoyed your stay, thank you so much for your feedback :) Rgrds Paul...

Management Response

Thank you for your feedback it is very well received and really does assist, people looking to take an informed decision about booking Porto Paolo from someone that has experienced the Apartment in the physical form. Porto Paolo is without doubt the most prestigious block in the north of Malta, these properties where expensive to purchase, which reflects the asking price to Holiday Let having a price tag of circa Eur750,000.00 to buy. I am delighted you had a wonderful time and enjoyed your stay at Porto Paolo, Best Regards Paul...
